As a 17 year old guitar player in 1980, seeing John with master Indian musicians at the Roxy theater, and with the Friday night in San Francisco tour, was nothing short of Nirvana for me. The "Friday Night,' tour was tremendously successful and single-handedly popularized jazz music with the younger crowd. Those concerts in 1980 had a rock and roll feel to them, selling out every venue. The two shows I saw at the Roxy were more of a spiritual epiphany than a concert. I was about 5 ft away from John for both shows, I could feel a benevolent energy come down upon him through him and into the crowd. He would look upward as for inspiration, his eyes would roll back into his head, as his fingers responded like butterflies dancing on strings. No other musician, or person has influenced me more on how to approach the instrument and life itself, than John.
