JM goes full beast mode in "Ma No Pa" starting 57:50 Incredible rendition of the track! It'd always been a rhythmically complex Jazz track, but JM added a rock flavour to this with the tone of his guitar here!!

John McLaughlin is one of the greatest guitarists alive. When asked to define what truly great music is, Rachmaninoff said something like, “…after everything is said and done, the only true criterion of Great Music is the melody…” In that sense, the genre doesn't mean much. Melody, harmonies transcend the barriers of any one single genre. If Stevie Wonder lived in the 18-th century, he would be creating symphonies and concertos. In that same sense, John McLaughlin has played - created - in a variety of genres, from jazz-rock to fusion to even blues. It takes a beautiful and capable mind to be able to transcend the boundaries of genres and to creatively collaborate with musicians of so many different backgrounds. Hats off to John McLaughlin.

JM is so enthusiastic and in tune with his friends, playing wonderful music that crosses boundaries. He is a truly "world musician" who has surpassed even his achievements playing with Miles and leading Mahavishnu. A wonderful upload-thank you!

the one and only piece "you know you know" included after 1:08h (originally played first with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the 70th. (A Tuning rythmn sometime overlayed with a straight blues pattern and also adding shakti melodes. Enough space in that "break" between the "you know" theme to improvise for the indian masters (including half-indian John, i mean musically)

I don't recognise it as being anything McLaughlin has recorded or written before. It's a simple rhythmic vamp on one chord resolving the minor 3rd to a major 3rd. If it really does remind you of something, it might be the first piece on the Miles Davis "Tribute To Jack Johnson" album (the rocking piece kicking off with Cobham playing a simple beat) in which McLaughlin does something very similar, vamping on one chord, this time creating tension between a bluesy 7th and 7sus4 (like Lennon in the snappy intro riff on Doctor Robert, the Revolver album).

Has transcended from a sketch of an idea just a couple of minutes long, on the Inner Worlds album, to a work of such tender beauty. The tone Srinivas gets out of that electric mandolin is just gorgeous. It reminds me a little of Hank Marvin at his most expressive.

I freaking love Remember Shakti but man his guitar tone is an odd choice, sounds more like HIFI clipping than natural tube distortion. And I'm glad his experimenting with the tremolo arm was a brief fling. I feel it doesn't come naturally to him, and that's possibly why he pretty much abandoned it after a while. He does the dip dip dip thing a la Jimi Hendrix, and then uses it to make the last note of a phrase quickly swoop, a la Jeff Beck/David Gilmour. It detracts from, rather than enhances his playing. He doesn't need it, he's John McLaughlin, the most incredible guitarist alive 🙏

Some of these pieces are years old, played by McLaughlin with different varying musicians. The themes were composed by McLaughlin, certain recognisable phrases repeated throughout each piece. The musicians are then free to springboard off the theme to improvise, returning occasionally to play the theme unique to that piece.
