@@laughter95 In the last election, most of the democratic candidates devolved into identity-politics and trying to out-woke one another with mud-slinging. What Biden's election showed is that thankfully most of the people didn't care about all that and an old, white, straight male still turned out to be more popular than all the younger, diverse candidates. Would any of them be doing a better job than him, right now? Maybe. Maybe not. As an example to that, everyone can just remind themselves of Vice President Kamala Harris telling migrants to not come here, because they can't handle them, even thought being pro-immigrant was one of the major platforms EVERY democratic candidate was sooo big on. But, when it came to it, with her even being VP, they were faced with reality and that maybe it wasn't going to be as easy as they imagined during their campaigning. Don't know how many years Biden's got in him, but it will be interesting to see if the democratic candidates will do the same come the next election. Meaning, will they make the same mistakes.

I grew up the only white family on an Apache reservation. At school I was picked on specifically for the way I looked. Later in life we moved from the reservation, to a predominantly black/brown neighborhood. Where again I was picked on for being one of the only white kids. I think it’s just human nature to a certain extent to view difference with suspicion. I also made many friends and gained a great sense of what it feels like to be discriminated against based only on skin color or outer appearance. I learned to take and make jokes. Not take myself too seriously. And that there is a huge difference between people with ordinary everyday ignorance and a truly hateful person. Great conversation! I really enjoyed it.

While I didn't have the experience of being a minority in terms of skin colour, where I grew up, I grew up around a lot of European people from different countries, mostly Italians. When we were kids, and even to this day, we would all take the piss out of each other and our cultures. And as the only Ukrainian, I generally got quite a big dose of people making fun of my culture, but by that same token, we would also make fun of Italians, polish, Germans, the British, and the French. Most of us are still friends to this day, 25 years later. There's a certain inner peace that is developed when you can laugh at yourself and also be comfortable to laugh at others for their differences. Not to be mean, but to have a laugh. I also find that some of the funniest things you can say about anothers culture is when there is a grain of truth and you've come to understand it yourself.

What I find refreshing about this party is the tone of conversation. It's amicable, reasonable, and honest. It has purpose and ambitions, with an objective, but the objective is not being muddled with petty dispute. Where I find even my favorite news commentators slipping, this initiative seems laser focused on the issues facing Americans, and less concerned with superficial titles that are ultimately used solely to otherise and create tribes of dissent than of unity. Days before Andrew released this initiative, "Forward" was a motif in my comments. There are forward thinkers in every sect of society, in every nation. This movement isn't limited to those carrying the torch leading the way. The movement is guided by the will of the people who are all collectively making individual steps forward. I hope people will be inspired, and possess courage enough to run for office under the Forward Party. Advocate for local changes. I've heard the saying "You can't reinvent the wheel." Well, last time I checked we weren't riding around in wooden wagons. It's odd to be ruled by political thought, as old as wagon wheels.

@terrypussypower3 жыл бұрын
@@cadethumann8605 I’ll give you my interpretation, see if it’s any use. The present day “woke” Left is a reincarnation of the self righteous, censorious, finger-pointing, “holier-than thou” attitude typical of the religious Right wing of the 1970’s and 80’s. I’ve lived through both eras, and get the exact same instinctive repulsion from both ideologies. Except that the “woke” version is even worse, as it’s a betrayal of everything the centre Left, epitomised by Martin Luther King, were fighting for in the 20th century. The present day “woke” Left has abandoned the working class, in fact has abandoned “class” distinction’s altogether to focus instead on racial division and race hustling. Thats why the term “woke” has become a pejorative.

As an independent who I suppose leans a bit towards left, I try to refrain from hostility and discuss with civility. Since politics is not entirely black and white (while idiots and assholes on either side get more attention, there are the less vocal and more understandable folk), I constantly wonder what is the right choice and how far should I take it. While I would be interested if more people explored the positive aspects of our ancient ancestors (like, It'd be nice to see stories about Knights who were actually decent folk and not just ones who gleefully butchered and assaulted defenseless people like in many modern tellings of medieval times), people definitely discriminated, tortured, brutalized, and exterminated. I love this segment, because I see the cause of the problem (tribalism) across almost all topics these days. Racism comes from our innate tribalism. US politics have become tribal as can be, thus why most people won't budge on their views (even when presented with a logical argument demonstrating the blatant contradiction in those positions) . Their views represent their tribes views and that is all that matters when people go so tribal. It ends up being us vs them regarding everything. Progressives (by name, not the people actually for progress) are just as tribal as Trumpers, yet they assume they are superior when they are just as much a part of the problem. True progressives (like Yang) take a practical approach and they such up their emotional biases and avoid going tribal. Our tribal brain is our lizard brain. It's instinctual, unaware, visceral, illogical and can't see reason. We need to use our pre-frontal cortex to solve problems in a practical manner, because only our cortexes can squelch our emotional and tribal biases which blinds us to the feasible solutions.
@scratchpenny3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. As someone who voted for Trump in the general election (not because I liked the guy but because I thought he would do a better job than Biden/neoliberalism), I can say that this is the problem on both sides. What you're talking about is exacerbated by social media and software algorithms. I don't have proof that it is intentional, but it is happening either way. And it's an example of us developing and using technology that we aren't mentally/emotionally prepared to handle. Our material world continues to rapidly advance, while our mental/emotional one has not made much progress in thousands of years. It's a very dangerous situation when one really thinks about where this is all headed, and if history tells us anything, it is likely to be abused for power and control. On another note, I don't think 'true' progressives and many Trump supporters are that different in their goals as they may first think. Many Trump supporters are populists and want some of the same things as progressives. Or, at least, they can agree on many of the problems in this country. That's why the old guard Republicans ended up turning on Trump and supporting Biden (either publically or secretly). Despite being semi-incompetent, he threatened their existing order. In my view, there is an order of elites that runs the world, and it doesn't really matter whether they have an R or a D behind their names. But, unfortunately, their interests are usually not in the best interests of regular people. And so, they encourage fighting amongst ourselves to maintain their power. IMO, that's why we see so much emphasis on identity politics rather than more critical issues like the financial system, war/imperialism, and legal reform.
@gordthor53513 жыл бұрын
@@scratchpenny I couldn't agree more with what you stated and it's nice to see others of whom totally get it. I think you nailed it with your assessment. The powers that be absolutely want to keep people divided, otherwise someone like Yang might get elected and give the power back to the people. Unfortunately, I don't see how things can change until the masses wake up and realize how they are being controlled to vote for the leaders in the best interest of the powers that be (basically the extremely rich and powerful). Right from the start it was clear that they most certainly didn't want genuine and intelligent leaders like Yang or Tulsi and they did a good job at turning people against them. Even though they had no real dirt on them. Social media, Ai algorithms and echo chambers are powerful tools for the powers that be to play people like puppets on a string, to do their bidding. It's very sneaky control and most people don't see how they are being influenced to go against their own best interests. I don't think the tech companies did it intentionally, but they were blinded by their greed for advertising dollars and now the people are the product. Coders tend to be very strong in analytical intelligence, but weak in emotional and social intelligence. I'm not surprised that they over looked the negative affect on society. It's causing people to be extremely tribal and irrational and it can't go on like this. This dire problem needs attention, because things will only get worse if it isn't addressed. Keep being a voice of reason and try to help as many people as you can to see the light. Tribalism blinds people, where they no longer can see reality clearly. Echo chambers don't equate to reality, but many people see their reality through only their echo chambers. Have a happy holiday.

It's a side effect of runaway capitalism. Decades of right wing policy took its toll not just on the economy, but society. "Woke" ideology is, in effect, a new religion, a post-modern rather than pre-modern religion, and individuals and institutions with enormous amount of capital have embraced it in the same manner they did Christian faith during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Big capital, the rich and powerful, seek ideology as a method of controlling the population, and when the evangelicals and other radical conservatives fell out of favor with the public, intersectional race and gender ideology was in effect chosen by a new generation of corporations to become the tool by which they keep the public divided and feuding among itself. Capitalism is by nature feudal, and so society inherits feudal tendencies when the institutions founded on free market ideology are allowed to grow in power and wealth unimpeded. The "woke mob" as it were is actually quite far to the right, they are not anti-capitalist, but actually a crucial tool of the very institutions they would have you believe they're against. This is, in effect, the results of the "free market" ideology people like Reagan and Henry Kissinger pushed, and little do most people know that identitarianism has always been a mainstay of right wing propagandists, long before they began courting conservatives. Most of the propaganda in the USA has its roots in the work of a man who got his career started by selling cigarettes to flappers, branding them as a symbol of feminist liberation. All post-modern ideology creates a no truth only power environment that inevitably collapses into feudal conflict, and capitalist ideology as well as "woke" ideology have a strong point of compatibility on that shared feature. Corporations fly the banner of LGBTQ or BLM precisely because they know such ideologies divide the public with unreal nonsense, such that they can't unite on shared class issues.

A bunch of studies have shown it's better to go to second tier "sub ivy" schools, because kids get to be a big fish in a smaller pond, which raises their confidence versus being in the bottom half of Harvard. My friend was in the bottom half of her law school class and the Dean got up and said only the top third of students should expect to become practicing lawyers. Her confidence was utterly decimated and indeed she never ended up practicing law and had to work for 10+ years to dig out of law school debt.
@xandercorp61753 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. It's worth noting, however, that there will always be a bottom half of Harvard; in other words, it is less of a problem of being on the bottom half and more a matter of lax or corrupt admission standards. It's too painful to most people to be firing on all cylinders, exceeding your limits over and over only to be the absolute struggling bottom of the heap dying a slow death on the slide to failure. Being more realistic about the brutal nature of the competition between talents should be the rule, not the exception: people who won't be stopped won't be anyhow, and those who have better options and less of an appetite for struggle and travails will have better understanding of their situation from which to recognize and decide to take those better options.

Adding a false war of class is no different. How about there is no war of anything, but its YOU vs YOU.

Just Great! This was the best dialogue professor McWhorter has presented his ideas and views about "Woke" people and his solutions. I watch many of his debates and presentations, but this one I believe could change some of those "Woke" people. Andrew Yang made a great impression also. I hope this is seen by many.

This country has so much it needs to work on and continue to improve on and continue to understand. But this is the greatest country. It's why my family came here. It's why I don't want to leave. Important conversations are had here that will imprison you "there". Thank you for this important and difficult conversation.

Yang is the most open Democrat to ideas. This is discourse. We need more people like him on both sides.

This is a really good interview. The ideas discussed here get deep down into the issue, while using simple language and self-evident arguments. Great job guys.

generally conservative white guy here! Thank you for speaking up about halting the crazy train. When it seems like the left and right are trying to ‘out crazy’ each other, the whole country suffers. Thoroughly enjoyed this conversation

Great interview, I will be checking out the rest of Yang's content. Glad there is some level headedness

This is a very good discussion. I really appreciate the intellectual honesty of both parties and the attention to nuance of the subject matter since it seems to be that on both sides of the political spectrum we like to make grand generalizations of issues and leave out the very important nuance.
@nealorr50863 жыл бұрын
That's definitely true. It should be noted however that Yang and McWhorter are both best described as center left.
@AlexBlack-xz8hp3 жыл бұрын
@@nealorr5086 I'm aware of that. My point is more that typically this topic gets overly simplified on both sides of the political spectrum, so it's nice to see that there's a more nuanced convo happening regardless of political position of the parties talking.
