Professor John McWhorter, author of "Woke Racism," argues that condescending leftist ideology hurts black people.

I learned a lot from this full, half-hour interview with Columbia linguist John McWhorter.
He argues that "Woke Racism" hurts black people in many ways: from treating them as incapable of logic, to calling for abolition of tests, to insisting that violent kids stay in schools.
He says that all these ideas are propped by a religion-like ideology that "requires that you sequester your brain for illogical thinking."
You can watch the video above for more.

When I was attending college back in 2011, I met a black woman from Africa who came to attend that same college. She was extremely smart and charming. One time she asked me why do some of the black people here sound so rude. I didn't know what to tell her. It just goes to show that skin color isn't the problem, culture is.

@@firstLast-jw7bm In my opinion, the principle stands. For instance, I currently live in middle Tennessee, but am from south Alabama. Now, I LOVE Alabama, but every time I've seen what some call "white trash" -- a tweaking mother, cigarette in hand, blaring bad Top 40 hard rock, car full of kids, cursing them like the plague, and driving like a bat out of hell -- my stomach turns. Culture. It's culture. Every ethnic group has their valuable cultural traditions, and every ethnic group has their morally bankrupt cultural traditions. The problem black people in America face, according to every respectable black friend I've ever had, is their cultural traditions that are problematic have to do with weighty matters that hamstring them in massive ways, whether that be family structure, education, self-sufficiency, or violence. Every individual of every background has the responsibility to become the best version of themselves against all odds.

@@rcyalater...2305 It really depends what they're educated in. I think talking about this topic saying "an educated man" implies that he is informed on it, since that is the topic at hand. The guy in the video is a professor of Linguistics at Columbia university so he is definitely both informed and educated. I'd also add that as someone who is currently studying as an under grad that of all the people I've met at university I've only met one who I'd describe as "woke". Maybe it's a bigger problem in the USA than in the UK (where I am) but it's a very small minority of students who believe this stuff. You just hear about them because they're nuts. You don't hear about the 99.99% of students who aren't like this because "normal student doesn't storm out of class over perceived racism" isn't a very interesting headline. In my opinion the real issue is low tier universities letting any clown in as long as they have the money and allowing them to study whatever they can find someone to teach them. We need higher standards for both our students and our courses. Someone who studies gender is a lot more likely to be woke than someone who studies mathematics because those topics are 100x more likely to come up in gender studies class. They're actively seeking them out. Those students are also going to have a lot more free time when they graduate to spread their BS too on account of them being unable to find a job and all, unlike normal people who study accounting or what have you.

@@vrclckd-zz3pv It's definitely a bigger problem in the U.S. / Canada. The w0ke ldeology has infiltrated the administration of most top universities by both transmission of the ideas, and by implicit/explicit threats of reputation and career destruction. Because it has gotten to the top of higher ed institutions, it has had the ability to force its policies and beliefs onto the 95% (or whatever) of professors/students who don't really buy into it, but are too scared to say anything publicly. Luckily, it seems like we are nearing a turning point where speaking about the absurdities of this stuff is becoming easier. Excellent discussion. I taught adult education in a California state prison for over 25 years. Beginning in 1992, I found that about 95 percent of my students were either black or Hispanic. None ever identified as a victim. In fact, the idea that somewhere, somehow, some "system" or pesky white person was responsible for their incarceration would have been laughable. Unfortunately, by 2017, the mentality of my students had changed--and so did their study habits. It had become fashionable to find blame everywhere outside of themselves. Graduation rates plummeted as improving oneself became thought of as beneath their dignity. Thanks for reading.

I'm first generation born here, raised on the West side of Chicago. Ability to pass school exams in my school was directly proportioned to the way the child was raised. My friend I thought was smarter than me, but, he was raised with a single parent and had a lot of freedom. My parents made me stay home a finish my homework before I could go out. I also had to be in bed by 9:00PM My friend overdosed on drug at age 17 and I went on to be successful in architecture. Mr McWhorter, in my experience I have seen that the teacher may have the ability to teach, but , if the child is not prepared to learn there is failure. It is necessary to teach the parents or parent how to prepare their child to learn. Wouldn't it wonderful if once a month there was a class in school for parents I. E. "parent preparedness"

Why are we changing the test. Should we not change the way we teach? Early education and focusing on good building blocks. I am not a fan of standardized test. I was that other kid and did not get my act together until I was in my mid-20's and I attribute it to my single absent parent household. I hold not malice towards my parents; I love them very much, however they were always working and we were poor so I was a latch-key kid with few parameters. I did figure it out since I started with a work ethic and ended up getting my GED, went to college (not that college is necessary) and started my own business(s). So it can be done, but some have to learn the hard way. I agree with John Doe that if children are not in school they can not learn. Kick them out of school. That will wake the parent up and the child too. I agree with John Vahl that if we don't prepare our children then they are destined to fail. But if they are not in school and not working, then they should be kicked out of the home. Harsh, but necessary. It is truly hard to starve in America. Shelley, I agree that teachers are teaching to the test, yet I don't think changing teaching styles is the issue. There have been "innovations" in teaching style since I was a kid in the 60's. Perhaps we need old fashioned teaching instead. I see two issues: teachers have lost the autonomy to be creative in their teaching because they are teaching to the test and students are not disciplined because the teachers and administrations hands are tied which encourages a poor learning environment. I don't have the answers, but once the issues are identified we can start finding solutions.

@@shelley9280 Do you think the real world is going to bend to your learning style? Nothing wrong with the teaching...it's the lazy students who aren't disciplined or don't face repercussions for their bad grades or behavior. Smart and motivated kids learn more from KZbin and outside the classroom than they will in the classroom. It all comes down to the individual and their parents.....enough with teacher-blaming and trying to find solutions to the obvious problem (lazy kids with no discipline or drive). @@vrclckd-zz3pv that example of a rare chromosome disorder is NOT what is meant by "non-binary". That is LYING as a cope or gaslighting by gender activists to "culturally appropriate" the real medical conditions of other people (*) to evade rational arguments. 50+ genders and non-binary means a person born with one or the other set of normal female or male chromosomes, and normal human development, who may merely display some traits or affects of language, or gait, or interests that are stereotypically attributed to the opposite sex, then some expert -- or a group of teenage peers -- tells them that means they are trans or are non-binary. Or perhaps they feel uncomfortable with normal gender stereotypes, or they feel uncomfortable with their normal gender body parts (many girls understandably feel "weird" about physical changes and "weird" or shy about attention from boys, or worse attention from grown men), and this feeling grows to the point where "dysphoria" (opposite of euphoria) could become a mental obsession. All the way to full on deeply rooted revulsion of one's birth sex and/or deeply rooted desire to change that to the opposite. That last one is trans, so non-binary is more or less political posturing on the ground of Marxist Critical Theory called Qeer Theory. (Spelled incorrectly on purpose) (*) Benjamin Boyce interviewed a woman who had XY chromosomes in the womb, but that ran parallel with the medical condition that prevented her body from utilizing any of the testosterone that It produced, so it is as if she had no testosterone to develop from a girl fetus into a boy fetus or from a girl teenager to a boy teenager. She was stuck being a girl and a woman with XY chromosomes. Extremely rare circumstance of genuine intersex biology. She grew up as a woman and married a man, and she was unable to have her own children, due to this medical condition.

Great conversation. Very refreshing to hear someone call out "victims" for exaggerating how "hurt" they are by another's action. I have a tough time watching and reading news over the past few years because the victimhood mentality is so frustrating. I came from nothing. Started working in 7th grade with my paper route, and worked my way up. I built a great work ethic, educated myself, and give everything I have and have become successful in my work and personal lives. I could've cried victim at so many obstacles I had to overcome. But I didn't. It doesn't help. I took ownership of my life's journey. This is why it's so frustrating to see people whose #1 skill is victimhood. They will never be happy because they are sabotaging their own lives by denying themselves opportunities to overcome obstacles. Instead, they cry.

He's good, unfortunately he also kind of twists the truth. For example, when John acknowledges that a Black student is actually more likely to disrupt classrooms -- He argues that this is not affecting White students, because his implication is that Black students only interact with other Black students. That's not true, however, Black students frequently do interact with students, and they are actually demonstrably more likely to commit violence against White & Asian students.

You gotta appreciate a guy who can poignantly work defenestration into an important conversation. McWhorter is describing Mr. Rogers, who has since dropped his family name and started calling himself Ibram X Kendi, in a certain way as to mirror what was said over a hundred years ago by Booker T. Washington, “There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”― Booker T. Washington “There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs - partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Thanks for putting this interview up. McWhorter is one of the most thoughtful and deliberate voices in these discussions. I really wish he got more exposure, but then too I know he’s already having a greater impact than the enemy would even begin to admit. I’d like to see him in a vocal cabinet position one day too, but I know that’s just more because of a political desire than ideological. He can only influence academia so much when the solution is to completely defund the ‘social science’ programs across the entire west 👍

I have worked with Black men and women my whole career. There are as many lazy white workers as Black. There were never any race issues that I saw when we all worked hard together. However, when company's had to fill a race quota, I saw some minorities that should never have been hired. The strange thing is they used the race card all the time. They were untouchable and knew it. They were the racist, not me. I enjoyed working with hardworking Blacks. I was proud that they broke the barrier and showed whites they were one of us.

McWhorter's brilliance and wisdom has certainly been borne out by the passage of time, as he suspected. As a teacher who was forced to follow the "religion" of the anti-racist scare, when Kendi's book became required reading for our 9th graders (in a simplified version for teens), I am now relieved that the wizard has been exposed, the curtain drawn back, and reason is replacing white paranoia. Kendi's binary racist/anti-racist labeling was not only "dim," but, perhaps also fraudulent, as inquiries are currently taking place as to where the $45+million collected by his Center for Antiracist Research have gone. Bless your voice of reason, John McWhorter.
