John Muir Way #1 - Off To A Rough Start

Arriving in Helensburgh I am eager to set off on my thru hike of the John Muir Way across Scotland. After the first few steps the “bonny Scottish rain” turns into a lashing downpour complete with road spray from passing vehicles racing down the road alongside me. A few miles later the calm drizzle of the logging road I’m on is shattered by massive lumber loaded trucks bigger than the road thundering towards me. I stumble upon a water soaked warning sign that is so trashed and smeared the only word I can read is “IMPASSABLE!” Yeah that’s just the beginning of things, but
I have learned to trust in myself and in the trail. To break clean away, as old Johnny said, is not an easy thing sometimes but it is always worth it. This I’ve come to know, and so I quietly press on.

you dont have to be too stealthy dude nobody minds you camping wherever you want as long as you dont make a mess. which you wont thats why i gve you a sub. welcome to Scotland.

I used to live in Balloch as a child and the park was my playground. The castle was great then even had a tearoom and wee museum inside. Was there a few weeks ago and it broke my heart to see it all boarded up.

Oh the diversion…. Looks like we walked about 2 weeks after you did…. It was a lovely adventure but that first few hours was disconcerting!!

I did this hike a few years back and it’s just one big joy, gets better with each step. You are showing the essence of what I seen and bringing back lovely memories, I too walked it alone..

Thanks Huck. If it wasn’t for your comments on the PCT I wouldn’t know that John Muir is the “Father of the National Parks” in America. Incredible. It’s sad as a Brit to say I think you saw more litter on the short trails here than on the entire PCT, AT or IAT? Some people don’t take personal responsibility and respect nature 😢 Your videos are inspiring as always ❤

Hahah thats awesome Ive also done WHW and GGW in one go also just like you. Before that I finished JMW, about 2 years ago, I was awesome 8 days ;) Its alot of road and canal walking but still quite a nice walk all in all, I live in Edinburgh where you will be in few days Im guessing! I love North Berwick and Dunbar I been there plenty times walking and walk camping on the way, have fun! And yeah since you be there you can go do Berwick Coastal Patch(to Berwick upon Tweed) Its one of the best in Scotland!
