@Jemand Anders I seriously doubt your intelligence now. Someone with an IQ of 2 is not even capable of feeding him/herself, let alone write a fully formed sentence like mine (imagaine a day old baby). To give you the benefit of the doubt, let's assume a hypothetical universe in which one could start with a 0 IQ (which we cannot because it means that you have no brain and such babies die within 2 months of their birth or go on to live in a vegetative state). Notice the use of 'every' in my sentence which is used to signify a large number of trials, otherwise 'each' would have been used. If you add a few IQ points every time, one would atleast have an IQ of 50 in your hypothetical world. *Sorry*, but that was way too easy.

So if a large portion of members are Labour (an Australian party) then likely a Labour PM will be voted in, who is up to the politicans to know better... I think. That's also why we could never have had a Donald Trump situation. But we did manage to have a Tony Abbott situation, but at least he was held accountable.

The British were flying from London to Liverpool, and a couple of guys told them how nice New York is, so they held a referendum, and 52% voted to divert the flight to the US. Two hours later they learn that the plane does not have enough fuel to get across the Atlantic. But they can't have another referendum, because those who still want to go to New York know that they would lose badly, and that loss would infringe on their democratically won rights.

*Insert snide, shitty comment about how "We already had a referendum, you're just fishing for the result you want"* Yeah, you had an referendum. Yes, it said you wanted to leave the EU. But when there had *clearly* been a misinformation campaign prior to the vote, when all available evidence says that actually leaving is going to look almost nothing like what they were promised, when your elected politicians seem to have no grip on what the people actually want over 2 years on ... with all of this taken together, then I am sorry but saying that "we all had a referendum, accept the results as they were" is simply not acting in good faith. This is a momentous decision, and what's worse, this is a decision that is going to impact the youth more than anyone and they definitively want to stay. It's pretty sad that some old, bitter, frightened Brexiteer in Stoke-on-Trent or wherever is helping decide this for the young people who decidedly don't want it and but will have to live with it anyway.
@DivingDog0

But. But. Having a second referendum would destroy democracy. Lightning would rain from the sky, the sea would drain down its plug hole, and man would never again be able to wear socks. Okay admittedly, I'm a little shaky on the consequences of 'destroying democracy'. Perhaps there's a nearby Brexiteer who could enlighten us.

My favorite thing about John Oliver is that last thing he said: We can get upset about things that the president says and his/her policies, but there are systemic problems underneath them. There are problems (in the legal, criminal justice, immigration, electoral, etc. systems) in the US that have a more direct impact on our daily lives that we need to care about. The president is just the most public, and in this case loudest, figure involved.

I really enjoy Seth's interviews. He allows his guests to speak in complete uninterrupted sentences. He allows his guests to complete their thoughts and points. One of the many reasons I love John and LWT is their outward focus. It does no harm at all for Americans to have the occasional teaspoonful of what I lovingly call, "The Rest of Planet Earth''. Obviously I know that not all Americans are insular. And when you have a country like America, insularity is understandable. But a few mins of 'not America' is healthy and it tastes great!

While this is true. It’s also true that they need to be working and raising money right now. Obama announced around nowish and other people who went on to be president have also announced around now. Trump was working with the Russians to attack our election in 2011. So someone needs to be working on a plan to address the GOP aided, Russian attacks that are going to happen, that never stopped after 2016. So I get your frustration. And I certainly don’t have any loyalty to any one candidate I do understand that to fight the forces of well evil the winner will need to have as much money and support as humanly possible. Personally I don’t mind the candidates working to meet and greet people in the early primary states I do mind the media acting and covering the election like it’s tomorrow.

I think for a lot of viewers who are not from the USA that watch their late-night shows, this sense of whether or not an international story like Brazil's election is 'important enough' to talk about instead of Trump's weekly mishap or bad policy idea is really frustrating. Journalists and political comedians in the US frame the issues of the day or week like they're apocalyptic events, and I think that closes off even the most liberal American minds to what is happening in the rest of the world. Also, there is no reason for the US presidential election cycle to last any longer than six weeks.

A GREAT site. I could easily spend 3-4 hours a day on it so I have to force myself not to go from article to article to where I lose track of time. There are 7 billion people on the planet, and only 320 million of them live in the US. So, it's bizarre to me that so many Americans seem to have zero interest in what's going on outside our country. (And, btw, no, I don't have anyone to discuss "world news" with. I've given up even trying).

Being diagnosed with depression for over twenty years and listening to this reminds me of every therapy session I've had. It's kind of cathartic seeing the rest of the world come to grips with the cancer of it's own soul when you've been watching it develop for twenty years screaming about it and being called crazy. The sad truth is at least half the population on the planet are sociopaths. And I know many out there want to argue this point.... OK. The last presidential election was the largest scientific experiment ever conducted proving my conclusion. People knew exactly who Trump is, was when they voted him in and what he was about. Half the population voted for him. Not all sociopaths voted for him. Some smart ones, I'm sure, are capable of understanding the better everyone does, the better they will do, and so voted against.... but that half... that voted for Trump.... they are the dumb sociopaths. So at the very least, half the population are not just sociopaths. They are the retarded sociopaths. Enjoy the rest of your life as you walk through them knowing the truth.

John Hull half is extreme. I’d say about 1/5 has some severe personality disorder like sociopathy, 1/5 is like Peter Petigrew (weak cowards clinging to the coattails of powerful sociopaths), 2/5 is apathetic and just doesn’t want to think about it/gets confused, overwhelmed, and disheartened thinking about it, and1/5 are normal decent aware people (though probably only half truly affects change. I’m engaged and I care, but I have neither the resources nor skills to help much IMO)

Also, less than 1/4ish of the population voted for him. About half didn’t vote at all, and Hillary got 3 million more votes.

John Hull but again, only 1/4 of the population voted for him and more voted for Clinton. So even your experiment shows it’s far less than half, and even my ratios are pessimistically inaccurate.

@@katelynnehansen8115 Again, the election is a much larger sample pull. 50~50 enough of a split to be in margin of error. And then you must consider some sociopaths voted against. Also it is in sociopaths nature and interest to down play their actual numbers.

It's partly because the 24-hour news cycle feeds off of negative stories, not positive ones. John Oliver even did a segment about this at one point in 2016, I think, where he listed all of these amazing developments in the world relating to hunger, poverty, conflict, and technology but viewers respond more strongly to negative news items instead.

The UK driving itself off a cliff... a fitting end for a former empire who never got the hang of the whole "voting" thing. Can you imagine if the US populace voted to stay a union or not during their Civil War? No, they knew some things do not get put to a vote, it's either done or it's not done. "Emotions are high, lines are being drawn... but first let's count every vote in Kansas before we do anything rash." The vote says do the rash thing and split! "Guess our hands are tied." Lincoln shrugs and that's it.

I appreciate the intent behind this, and you're not wrong about Britain not being able to vote, but the US clearly has its own problems or Trump would have never become president and for that matter Hillary wouldn't have "won" the Democratic nomination. So we don't actually know how to vote either.

This is like seeing a squirrel with anxiety meet a golden retriever. Seth is smiling and cracking jokes to help people feel a bit better about life. John came in, was confused by the concept of human joy, reminded everyone they need therapy, and made jokes true to the Last Week Tonight spirit: self-deprecating, sarcastic, and make you cry both because they are hilarious and because they are rooted in the horribles truths we are trying to reconcile with our humanity.
