Many memories of listening to Peelie under the covers in the early 80's (when I was supposed to be asleep). Bittersweet to watch this now as so many in it are dead, not just John and Bowie, but Alan Freeman, Ed Stewart and even Mark E. Smith.

I only just realised tonight that John Peel had passed and all I can say is what a legend I used to listen to him from 1976-1981when i was supposed to be in bed sleeping (school next day) I think he has done more for music than anyone else in my lifetime RIP John hope you keep living those Teenage dreams

As a result of listening to John Peel under the bedclothes on a little green transistor radio i bought from Woolworths when I was 13/14 in the late 1970's, I ended up being a punk, going to art college and living my life as a painter and DJ at Dreams Never End Club which is now running at the Green Door Store under Brighton Station monthly. The man really did change my life and I still miss him now, though his son Tom Ravenscroft is doing a great job continuing the good work (and sounds more like his dad every day!). Great to see this again.

@@scoop2963 Peel admitted to having relations with girls below the age of consent in his biography. Shocking how people just wanted to sweep this under the carpet.

You know, the craziest thing I've learned recently is that Ken Dowe, the Dallas DJ who was John Peel's on-air partner in the early '60s, was a DJ at two highly successful local radio stations in my hometown (San Antonio) in the '70s! All this time I've been thinking of John Peel reverently as this great music god from England who's this absolute legend, and it turns out there's a local (if tenuous) connection to him! How crazy is that?

I admired the guys honesty and listened between 10 and 12 Monday to Thursday night. Where I discovered bands ranging from obscurity like Zoom Lens to Joy Division, Jazz Butcher & Red Stripe on snotty snail records. The house I moved to coincidently & aptly named Peel Cottage. I often wonder if some my music and poetry by crimson pomegranates would have been played on his show had he still been alive. John Peel was a total one off DJ Presenter a legend.

Followed this man from Radio London days (The Perfumed Garden wasn't it?) to the Beeb. Not only did Peely bring Captain Beefheart, The Incredibles, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Joni Mitchell, John Martyn, to my ears, but also Pigmy water slap music, live beetle jaw harps, Ramayana Monkey chant and other wondrous sounds from the planet, all of which were a major influence on my own life and career. Thanks John. Miss you badly.

zoned247 Excuse me, but maybe you're thinking of J.Saville ? While Saville was by all accounts a right pervert, as far as I know John Peel had no such tendencies and nothing of the sort has ever been levelled at him. Do please correct your statement as it's a serious blur on a great human being's memory. Thanks!

zoned247 Well, iif this is true I am forced to yield to your superior, and apparently well-informed, knowledge of JP's doings! I'm indeed shocked by this as I had always respected the man. Just goes to show.......... Excuse me doubly ...

John Peel got me listening to Joy Division early on... Met him at the John Peel Roadshow and he played "Dead Souls" for me to embarass me by dancing (trying the Ian Curtis Shuffle)... I now have a Joy Division tattoo 👍👍

John peel played durge on purpose. I know because i looked after his house and dogs with his sons best friend while he was one this program This is your life. He was a complete pain and a bad host to famous people. He only knew who he was unless he was told otherwise. He found this program a bit difficult but did it because they all knew him. They didn't listen to his radio show or they would have noticed it was mainly durge as was his record collection in his room he was so famous for. Durge and boring and rude.
