Love your comment. John is such a technician, but he is always so musical it doesn't bother me. He has absolutely whooped my ass into a 10x more disciplined player over the last 25 years. He inspires me to play more than anyone ever has. Fortunately, 99% of that time is when I have a guitar or 2 a few feet away at most. It's easier than ever to approach his technique with all this vidjas and interwebs and everything in between floating around. I had to do it the fucking HARD way...wearing tapes out, looking at (BAD) tabs like ?#@?? How the FUCK is that like THAT?? LOL...those were the days. Not really. What with these Fractals and Mark V plugins and such, you can get the tone for less than ever...it used to cost $10k at the minimum to have that kind of tone...plus a shitload of studio knowledge. Polished tones are like water these days, all you gotta do is learn how to drink it like a pro. Practice till it hurts kids
@Minenangel4 жыл бұрын
@@rickfeith6372 Well said! John's technique is a joy to watch but he also fucking sings with the guitar.
@rickfeith63724 жыл бұрын
@@Minenangel I love the singing....in my experiences, making a guitar sing is the best way to captivate an audience. I've been at this sport for 30 years now, since I was a little snot nose 13 year old wearing Levis's and Metallica shirts. I thought I could play pretty good by the time I was 18. I could definitely play, but I had NO CLUE that this was literally the starting point of playing...it's the advanced stuff that really separates the men from the boys. Things like dynamics, tone, control, spot on intonated bends, vibrato, volume control, proper use of effects, improvisation, smooth and tasty bar work, etc....and making EVERY note count and have its own flavor and delivery. I think I'm FINALLY starting to really understand this here wooden thing, it only took 3 decades. 😂

I remember the 1st time that I heard about Petrucci, LaRue & Portnoy, It was in 2009 through my mother (a person who never listens HM) and she bought me an historic concert back in 2005: G3: Live in Tokyo and the 1st song "Glasgow Kiss" was my history about these 3 members in my personal life. Now in 2020, that song is still one of my favorites and Petrucci, Portnoy & LaRue participation in G3 is still one of the best (for me). And this new song is in another level, better than the 1st time I heard. Hail John, Dave & Mike!

Can we all take a moment to appreciate John's cerebrum. Let me explain: He has this lead style which always sounds like 'him'. Somehow he's never written a phrase that's a total rip off of any earlier stuff. How does someone write thousands of melodies over their career, and stay true to their tone and expression, without turning into a copy-paste specialist? Very cool brain, bro.
@sheldoncooper81994 жыл бұрын

I agree totally, although it could be accidental that some phrases often come out as "inspired" or very familiar to other phrases whether from his or other guitarists. for example the phrase at 0:53-0:55 sounds much like Vinnie Moore rather than trucci. Gotta love papa john's music, also I recommend Buckethead, if you are looking for variety and a unique tone.
