That was awesome to watch! Finally the guitar god judges his mortal servants lol. For anyone (guitar nerds) wondering about the trick at 5:22: it's an inverted power chord. Normally on a 7string guitar the guy would play the chord like "5 7 7", but he has only 6 strings so he plays only the "7 7" part with the 5th of the chord as the bass note and the root is a higher note. This kind of power chord is a little dirtier, but less bassy and, because the strings produce a low octave sub frequency anyway, it sounds just as fine even with the low root missing. Big example of this is how Smoke On The Water riff is played. Just sharing some insight on stuff that always fascinated and bugged me when I was first starting out! Hope it helps someone!

Are you kidding me? Where are the covers from Dr Viossy? He's completely into DT and makes some of the best covers out there

Not a huge DT fan, but respect and admire the musicianship. And this is definitely cool that JP was so excited about these covers.

I’m really curious to see and hear the end result of making the music even harder. I hope he follows through with that when the next album comes out.

Awesome John. Thanks for making The Astonishing album. I love that album, its one of my favourite. I went to see you guys on that tour and then I brought my 11yr old son to see you live on The Distance Over Time tour and bought him a tour shirt. Now he's playing a lot of DT songs. I'll take a video of him and post it in YT.

I had to do that "aural illusion" when Thrice started utilizing drop A on Fire.

Myfavsandlikes I can’t read music, but he’s talking about how in the video the dude with the six string guitar played a Dream Theater song that was meant for a 7 string. So, dude above you said there’s a Thrice song that he did the same “trick” with.

ForOrAgainstUs quick question would that 6 string “aural illusion” work on a Baritone?

I love how John talks about the As I Am solo as "it requires a lot of stamina and right hand technique" He makes it sound like you could do scales every day for a month and be about that level, and I'm over here in 2007 like "ive been playing guitar for 5 years now and this is still beyond alien" He's my OG inspiration. #1 since 2003 when I first saw a video of Glass Prison live in Japan 😍❤
