Look. From what I understand is that We, as Christians have to suffer. Not necessarily in the sense of abuse from someone or living in a ditch for survival. But making the right choices even if it ruins us. Being kind to the neighbor who clearly doesn't deserve it. Giving your other cheek when deep inside you want to punch someone right in their face. When it hurts to do God's will. That to me personally is suffering. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. I get a moment of suffering each day because I try so hard to do the right things but because of sin I just keep failing. Because of other sinful unbelievers (whom I'm suppose to love) who do wrong towards me, I suffer because I am supposed to be the better person. Offer that cheek that I really really don't want to. Dissapointments all day everyday for a very Good, Great and Glorious Cause. That's my seeing of suffering. We don't have to be happy about doing the right things. We are allowed to be annoyed at turning away from sin. It's not for the faint hearted. You should expect suffering. Hopefully with God's grace not the evil kind of suffering.

Well said. Although it is only, for some, a rather small facet of their suffering. There are levels of pain in this world you and I cannot compute. Even I, personally, wish that were the only pain I experienced. Also, if you have a rainbow every now and then, you're better than many saints. Some have but darkness.

Others, and IMO the ones that are right, will say they lost their salvation because what they had to go through they deemed too much. I used to judge and withdraw from preachers/pastors that always claim healing and miracles rather than teach and explain the Gospel. I have learnt that we should pray for them. God wants you to be sick so that you will learn to obey His Word. "Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word...It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees...I know, LORD, that your laws are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me" (Psalm 119:67-75). God wants you to be sick because it demonstrates His power. "Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh...Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me" (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). God wants you to give away everything you have, so clearly that means He wants you to be poor. "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me" (Matthew 19:21). God wants you to be poor so that you will take your eyes off the things of this world. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:19-21). God wants you to be poor. He demonstrates this by how often the Bible speaks against the evils of money and wealth. "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" (1 Timothy 6:10). "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24). "But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?" (James 2:6-7). God wants you to be sick so that you can rely on His strength and learn to obey His Word. God wants you to be poor so that you can learn to trust Him and take your eyes off the things of this world. If you are not sick and poor, it is because you lack the faith to trust God, are not obeying Jesus' command to give everything away, and are holding on to the things of this world instead of longing for your eternal home in Heaven.

Wow! I'm looking into sufferings what it means to Christians. And this Minister pretty much made it clear. I like the way he put His body language into it as if his flesh is saying, " Yeah we know all about it!" It's a real breaking experience to get oil out of the olive or fragrace oil from roses, wine from the press. I suppose it will be alright as long as Jesus helps, His yoke is easy His burden light. I never believed in the prosperity gospel. I don't like believing that all the Christian life is, is suffering, war, and sacrifice. I hate that all God gueerentees is suffering, God doesn't guarantee deliverance, or marriage, or happiness at any point. All God seems to do is slight us. All God seems to care about is having his way all the time reguardless of the pain it puts us through, and all we get in return is an "I am with you".

Mr piper.. You among others enjoy your recognition to God's word, tge reality of suffering its not something God's word encourage but the revealation in God's word explain why we suffer, Worst of all at the hands of those we Love, strangers or who we know completes the cycle of physical or emotional torture. It is very difficult for most people to understand including believers, l cannot express the seriousness in the importance to God's word. These people at times including ourselves may not realize the seriousness to our actions when it comes to sin, it appears to me these people seem so disconnected by their knowledge of what they believe to be justifications to their character & behavior... We shouldn't suffer it is because we chosen righteousness automatically the unsuspecting unbeliever ignites suttlely or internationally to commit malice against someone they target. We must try to help these individuals recognize their un natural state through God's word and our own example. God bless.

Do you know what the good fight is? It’s not about physical deeds we do, it’s about fighting for the dispensation of grace, that justification is by faith in Christ apart from the deeds of the law. That Paul was first revealed this mystery and the simple Gospel that it is by Jesus Christs finished work by His death, burial and resurrection. The sad thing is, most people don’t trust Jesus Christ 100%, most taint the Gospel with things they “must do”, water baptism, striving, enduring etc when that is not what is required of us in this dispensation of grace which was revealed to Paul. Man loves to take the whole Bible as if it’s all written TO us today forgetting that Paul exhorts Timothy to rightly divide the Word of Truth. The Old Testament, the Gospels are written FOR our learning not our living today, Hebrews is written to 12 Hebrew tribes, not gentiles, as well as James is not written TO Gentiles either. Gods word clearly shows us that Jesus appeared to Paul as the first one to whom the mystery would be revealed, that everyone from that point on would be justified by faith alone. Romans to Philemon are for us today until Jesus returns and instruction for anyone who wants to be saved today and how to live thereafter. Jesus fulfilled the whole law on our behalf and died for our sins and rose again. Whoever is under the law is under a curse, but Gods word says we are no longer under law but under grace. Now we obey from the heart, not by keeping a list of rules and laws because of the free gift we have been given by our Father through His Son. This man, Piper, I believe, is an enemy of the Gospel of Gods grace, he perverts the Gospel with works and his Calvinist lies. This Gospel is so simple yet it confounds even the “smartest” man because can he even fathom that God would do such a thing, for all men, free of charge. Sad thing is, salvation is not possible until THAT Gospel is believed, the one that was revealed to Paul.

I know this is a year old, but I'd still like to address it. I'm a poor Christian myself. But money isn't the point. Do you work? You can be a blessing there, by showing up, by doing your job the best you can, by not giving up or blowing up when things go wrong. You can be a blessing by snagging a treat for someone else on a lunchbreak. You can be a blessing by calling your parents just to say hey. You can be a blessing by listening to someone else's problems. If money is tight, God understands. But what if, every paycheck, you set aside 10% for charity? Out of $100, that's $10. Not much, sure, but remember the widow Jesus saw giving? She gave 2 small coppers, which is hardly a king's ransom. But because she was poor, that money meant so much more. It's when we don't have much that what we got to offer means the most, see?

Jesus said that it is easier for a camel to jump through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven, that's true. But Joseph of Aramathea was rich, & because he was rich he was able to purchase a tomb & lay Jesus' body to rest for the 3 days before He came back. Being rich puts you in great spiritual danger. But we as Christians can't say that all men who prosper are sinful. God blessed Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David & Solomon beyond measure. It's not what you have, it's how you use it, see?

We only have accounts of those in power and that's where we get the narrative. I am with you on this. Not to doubt a specific region, but kind of all of them. They all seem to subscribe to similar tactics and beliefs and stigmas towards non believers or people with opposing thoughts or questions.

Hey I got a question. I understand the concept of suffering because the worlds is perverted in its ways and is incompatible with God and His people but don't you think suffering can be more of a seasonal thing to rather produces patience, empathy and understanding to fulfill one's purpose. For example, let's say somebody grew up in poverty but was a devout Christian and eventually able to get through with education and ends up as a smart businessman and eventually generates a lot of income. From all the struggles he's been through coming up don't you think as a steadfast man in Christ, keeping the faith and filled with Holy Spirit that once he becomes rich because he grew up in such struggles the spirit of God would turn his eyes to the poor and with such characteristics he developed from a young age of compassion and understanding it would burn a fire in him to come up with great ideas with those riches such as building a housing, schooling and feeding program/system for the poor; believers and unbelievers and be able to spread the gospel through these programs? Is being rich overcoming struggles with an understanding and sense of purpose/ direction also out of the equation for a Christian? Look at Nehemiah - restored Israel's walls with favor of the king and had political influence, Cornelius - philanthropist and was eager to know God in his interaction with Peter, and Barnabas - he sold land and gave the rest to believers. But I'm willing to hear anyone out please correct me if I got it wrong.

The prosperity gospel is corrupt, because it takes prospering to extremes of western materialism. However, it's still biblical to prosper in a realistic way, because we're called to walk in wisdom, and wisdom leads to favor with God and man - Proverbs 3:3,4 And David also tells us that the man who loves to study the Scriptures will prosper in all he does - Psalm 1:3. The Reformed way of despising the prosperity movement leads to the polar opposite of extremes - where 'prospering' becomes despised, let alone ignored. It's about the strait and narrow between the extremes, where we prosper by wisdom, and also suffer due to the same wisdom. Just like Joseph, who was favored everywhere he was, yet also persecuted for the same integrity by which he prospered. There IS a prosperity that aligns with the Bible, and it is also a prosperity that aligns with reality

Just look at the apostle Paul his life and tell me how much he 'prospered'. He has had a much worse life than most of us. Jesus even showed him beforehand how much he would have to suffer for Him. He was wiser than all other people. There was little favor with mankind.

I think the parable of the labourers in the vineyard applies here (Matthew 20:1-16). Some reach the kingdom by a more grueling life; others have an easier way there, but they all receive their reward in the end. The same could be said for John Piper. Is he not kingdom bound because he's never been imprisoned, beaten, or stoned and left for dead? He's had a great life, compared to many other believers through history, so who is he to insist that Christianity is about suffering? And how much suffering is required then, to have truly lived a "Christian" life?

He is the one saying at the end: "Depart from me, you evildoers, I never knew you," to people thinking they were His. Jesus was very clear, when He said that if someone wanted to be His disciple, He had to take up his cross daily. I however see a lot of people casting their crosses aside, claiming crowns instead. What is asked of each and everyone of us, is to do the right thing, even in the middle of adversary. It's indeed real hard. Many turn away. Ehhhh.,. I don’t know if I agree that Christianity “about suffering”, though I’m not saying it’s about prosperity either. I think suffering is perhaps inevitable because we live in a fallen corrupt world due to the fall of Adam and Eve and original sin and Christians are persecuted. but I wouldn’t necessarily enshrine that as the point. I don’t think God created people so they could suffer. I think he created them so that they could be free and flourish. I know. If he died to prosperity, and lived simply, he’d not take a million dollar cheque home. But he also said the more you make, the more you give, so maybe he donates a majority? Can tell from experience, that the first part about salvation is true. The latter is not. Jesus specifically called you to pick up Your cross daily. When is the last time you ever did that? Oh, and it's not a necklace. It's a mean thing, trying to seriously hurt, reject and kill you. There are many Christians with more faith than you, that did not get healed and did not get prosperous. Instead they got persecuted any which way satan could think of. If satan has exempted you from that, I'd seriously ask myself why he doesn't bother about you. Obviously you are not a threat to him.

Christians glorify suffering because Christ suffered on the cross. And because of many other bible verses. 1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. Psalm 119:71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. Romans 5:3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; Excuses for the Problem of Evil point to a "greater good" or "morally sufficient reason" for allowing suffering. By that logic, we should inflict suffering (since it makes people better).

You forget that the Bible says to love your neighbor and not get weary of doing good. It's always better to know the whole Bible, so to not get things out of context. Jesus also warned, that when we want to be His disciples, we will have to endure, like He endured. From satan and the people he uses for his purposes. No need to add to that.

Now that's love. That's power, to stay on that cross, while He had not to. And that's His justice, enabling the freedom of you as a sinner, because the only One righteous paid the price for your many transgressions. If you try to make God less than He is, you won't understand a thing. Who on earth are you, extremely little being, to have such a big mouth towards the Greatest of all? Your own mouth will one day judge you, when you stand before Him. You can know Him now, if you admit that you are a sinner and turn from those sins to Him in repentance.
