The legendary performance from John Prine in 1978. RIP to the greatest songwriter in this world and the next. If anyone has more information about this concert please let me know!

This same song, being sung ten years later, has more feeling, not as fast, and better timing.

Think this was the saddest song he ever wrote. Fan since 1971.

Such a tragically beautiful song. Nobody can play off all your emotions like John.

Thank you for posting this. This live version used to be on another channel YEARS AGO but it was taken down. I was heartbroken. I'm so happy to see this again 😅

You asked in the description if anyone has details on this concert. All I can gather is it was from his first appearance on Austin City Limits in 1978; still trying to track down the exact date. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t discover John until the 1983 Austin City Limit’s Songwriter’s Showcase (that episode also opened my eyes and ears to Guy Clark.)

It was known as Prine's "incest song, but it can be interpreted many different ways. One night stand? Was Wanda a prostitute and not know who Jimmies father was? The lessons the same though. Stop Using People!

I read somewhere that Wanda was a prostitute. James Lewis found her diary and found that out and committed suicide.

Just read somewhere else that Wanda was James lewis's mother and sister. From what I read it was written after a kid John knew when he was growing up.
