I’m 77 now and this song brings tears to my eyes, not because my kids are grown and gone, but for all the old people I passed by with no thought when I was young.

Yes, I think this too. I watched my Mum become invisible as she got older, people only noticed her if she was holding them up by being too slow. Most people can empathise with a child because they remember how it feels to be one. Some lovely people (like John Prine), have a natural affection and affinity with the elderly even when they're young. But I find most have no interest in them at all and no patience or understanding until they become old themselves. We treat the elderly terribly in the western world, in my opinion. 😢💔👵🏻👴🏼

I am 63 this month and Ive loved this mans art since I was 21 introduced by the 10 year old gentle man that I had the privelege of knowing. He couldnt know this song was even written as he died 2 years ago. I walk around listening to this song at walmart and greeting and chating with every old person I meet if they are willing..I had a stroke 11 years ago that left me at the mercy of a sound in my head called pulsatile tinnitus that has been slowly sucking the life out of me. When I listen on my headphones im momentarily able escape the madness this condition causes. I hope you are doing well at 80 years old now..take care..

My wife of 47 years passed away almost a year ago at age 70. She never got old, in my eyes. Though I miss her terribly, I am grateful for the generosity of the universe that brought her to my side and kept her beside me for so many years. I am grateful, too, that she never had to experience the pain of the kind of loneliness that this song portrays. We had our hard times occasionally over the years, but we never got to that stage of "we don't talk much anymore." We loved each other, and we every day said, "hello, in there," right up to that morning when she stopped breathing, lying beside me in our bed, after a 6-year battle with cancer. This song is a good reminder to treasure every moment, and to do all you can to make the world a better place.

I have told this story before, about 25 years ago living in Nashville, I was off work one day, I was hanging out in a bar in Hermitage. The door opened and a man walked in and sat down at a table. I told the guy next to me "Hey, that's John Prine" He said "Who is that?" I said, "If you don't know,I can't explain it you". I told the bartender that his beers or drinks were on me. I strolled over in introduced myself, He seemed a little down. Yet he was so nice to me. That is a memory I have and will always keep in my heart. R.I.P. This song really tells how fast time passes. One day you're playing with your kids, not a care in the world. Then one day you wake up and realize the kids are gone, the house is empty, and you wonder where the time went. It seems that in the blink of an eye, your life has passed and you just want to reach out your hand and grab the years backs before it's too late. And you realize, it is. Cherish each day, every minute, every second of life

Back in the 70’s this song played on an endless loop in my mind. As I walked to work one day I passed a residential hotel near my office downtown. Sitting in the window, on a flea-bitten and battered couch sat an old man. My 19-year old heart was stricken by this man so I waved as I passed. He sat up and waved back. The next morning there were several men in the window, all waving as I passed. I changed offices shortly thereafter and have long wondered about the men. They had been, after all, someone’s precious baby and now they felt forgotten by time and society. RIP John Prine. Thank you for this timely reminder to be kind.

Kathleen, I wrote a play at 17 called "The Poor, Poor Dears" about lonely folks dying alone. A year or 2 later I heard this song for the first time and became a lifelong Prine fan, because John's song better spoke the truth I was aiming for. He had such a fine grasp of American life as we experienced it; not many writers can claim that. Woody, Pete Seeger. Dylan sometimes. Now I'm old and listen to those songs of my youth with a wry smile. Thanks for your comments. ☺

John Prine was a national treasure. His sad loss at the beginning of the Covid Pandemic was a real loss to us all. He may not have had a beautiful singing voice, but his empathy and ability as an extremely young man to see deep into the souls, hearts, and lives of other people I don’t think has ever been equalled. His breakout song Sam Stone, about a returning Vietnam vet, is about the toll “serving our country” can take on our members of the military, and is as potent as ever, speaking loudly about our failure to help our veterans shattered physically and emotionally by their experiences. Yet he had a sly, irreverent sense of humor, singing about seeing him “ with an illegal smile” and other subjects with great wit and humor. Rest in peace, John Prine. We love you still, and the gift of great music you left us.

Sitting with my 97 yr world War 11 war vet. father night after night. I listen to this song and watch his eyes, and they tell stories that we can only imagine what they have seen. Everyday I Say" HELLO IN THERE" and he says "HELLO OUT THERE". with a big smile on his face. This is a special time for me and Him. Thank You John for this beautiful piece.

I cut my teeth on Johnny Cash in the 50's and have listened to country all my life, how did I miss hearing John Prine until I was informed of his death? His songs are so intuitive and not only about lost loves and dead dogs.

Between him, Bruce, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Cash, and Dylan, Prine always felt the most painfully honest to me. Never fails to bring me to tears. And not ones of despair. Just grief. Honest, devastating grief. Except of course when he is being funny as f(*&. Thank you so much.

And I couldn't hold my tears back - being 67 myself - the song is very emotional, wonderful and true. I wish and hope for good recovery to John. Hello in there, with love from Switzerland

John, I can't tell you how much I've loved this heart warming song for so many years. This song is like a short walk through time and space as we travel unwittingly from young to old often forgetting how the smallest expression of love care and can make the biggest difference to those who suffer from loneliness and despair. To think this was in your wavelength at this at such a young age is simply astounding. Thank you for your beautiful music and for this important life-lesson. You will be sadly missed. Rest in peace Mr John Prine

I did not. I came here because KZbin determined I might wanna hear a song by John Prine, and I heard this song, him at some club in New York City, and I'm listening to every version of it I can find now. I've heard a few of his songs in the past, but was never a fan really and I don't know why. But this song in particular has hit me hard, and caught me off guard. It's made me listen to other John Prine song and I'm truly inspired and in awe of the dudes talents, and his heart. I wish him well, actually, I wish him the BEST. He of all people truly deserves nothing less than the best life can give him.

I can remember when I less than 10 years old, I really loved to talk to older people, I couldn't stand the thought that people would walk right by them, never even noticed that was a person, but you know something in reality it was their loss, I would talk to them and ask about things I didn't know about, I always came away knowing more than I did, one thing I have learned about getting older, is that if we live long enough, that person will be you and I one day, I am only 66, I love life and I love all you guys out there for making the world a little better I pray that we all love each other and appreciate each other
