This was an interesting movie I stumbled upon last night on Netflix. I was impressed by how it reminded me of a modern marriage that I witnessed up close and personal.

How was she a flirt? 🙄 That was Ruskin's impression. We didn't read of any scandalous accusations in her second marriage.

Deflecting to make up for his asexuality

igbani, Effie was a great flirt and loved dancing, fashion and flirting. Others than Ruskin have said so. But why would that be a bad thing? Effie was a completely normal young girl who was neglected by her husband, with whom she was completely incompatible! When she married Millais she was older and a completely different person. She was married to a man who loved her, and in due course she was a mother of many children. It's not surprising that she behaved differently than while she was in Venice with Ruskin.

Yes, Ruskin was most likely asexual. But in Venice he left Effie a lot of freedom to pursue whatever she wanted. This might not have been done because he was selfless. Most likely he simply wanted to be left alone and be able to work. But nothing in his disastrous marriage to Effie Gray was just black or white. In the end they were both victims of the restrictive British legislation which made a regular divorce virtually impossible. And John's failure to have sex with his wife, turned out to be a great way out of this marriage, because it made an annulment possible!

@@sabineb.5616 I don't think Ruskin was asexual. He wasn't interested in Effie. Later in life he was attracted to a 10 year old girl that was a student of his. As this girl got older he wanted to marry her. He didn't get a chance to. Since her parents wrote to Effie about his character.

Not a huge fan of Pre-Raphaelite painting, with a few exceptions. Ruskin's scathing criticism is entertaining, too bad he lacks Tom Wolfe's sense of humor.

EFFIE GRAY film had an $11m budget. For my version, I researched the subject, shot the footage and edited it in a spare bedroom, so was flying solo. Considering my budget (easyJet flights to Venice) I still reckon I tell a pretty good story . . .
