Part 12: • John Salley: NBA Shoul...
Part 1: • John Salley on His For...
--------
In this clip, John Salley highlights how it's challenging for athletes who spend their lives honing their athletic talents to become adept at managing their finances. The conversation touches upon the financial struggles of some great athletes, such as Muhammad Ali, who went broke, while underlining the prudent financial choices made by others, such as Rashard Mendenhall, who understood the brevity of his sports career and hence spent judiciously. The conversation also brings to light the lack of business and investment discussions in NBA locker rooms, where the collective worth is enormous, and athletes could stand to learn from each other's financial experiences. Vlad points out a need for a shift in mentality where athletes are encouraged to make sound investments rather than extravagant purchases. Salley seems to agree, advocating for instilling a culture of finance and investment in the NBA circuit.

Can’t feel sorry for someone who makes millions of dollars playing a game and blows it. This is rich people’s problems, the problem is these dudes never had to work like a slave for minimum wage for years getting paid 10 to 11 dollars an hour and having to work two jobs or crazy overtime just to make ends meet. Bottom line if you blow through millions after three to four years and then your broke that’s your fault, they never understood the value of a dollar basically.

Ali was worth 80 ply million at the time of his death - trust me - he was NOT broke. Ali never ever struggled but he did have to build it up a few different times and do you know why ? Mike Tyson had 600 million. He said he just got out the hole for 60 million in 2018. Floyd Mayweather constantly fights because he understands how much his lifestyle cost and even at 50 he still fighting. Ali did have financial struggles becuz he helped a lot of people and liked to live nice. Lawrence Taylor arguably the best football player of alltime Went broke. Terrel owens lost over 100mill in bad investments… Allen iverson made nearly 200 million and still went broke. Evander Holyfield at one point went broke. I've always thought the rapper/actor/athlete is a dead end for the black community as a whole, those jobs are few and far inbetween, especially the top ones like a jay-z, lebron, etc. It's essentially a talent based lottery system, every black kid trying their best to be a rapper/actor/athlete is detrimental to the community as a whole, you add up oprah, jay/B, MJ, Lebron, magic, shaq, etc. you get what, 10 billion? maybe 15 billion dollars of wealth and they're not really spreading it around. What you want is 1 million black engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, mechanics, electricians, etc. That is 1 million x 80k-200K/year, even if you take 100k, that's 100 billion a year of wealth that gets channeled back into the community, then you raise your kids to do even better under better conditions, and there are what, 40-50 million black people in USA? getting 1million to be professionals whether blue or white collar isn't hard. I actually think the rap and sports narrative hurt black kids more than drugs.

Jordan's dad wasnt a millionaire, he was middle class. Kobe's dad was upper middle class (an assistant coach at Lasalle) but probably wasnt a millionaire either. I think they both just had a good family environment, good dads, and a dream (with no distractions like getting shot, drug dealers, etc). @@lamart3857 you sound like somebody who cant do math or read, or realize how much decades change pro sports payments. His nba career started in 1975 when the average player made less than 100k/year and his nba career ended in 1983, when the avg salary was 275K. All-Stars like Doctor J were lucky to cross a million a year in the early 80s. They probably lived comfortably, but its a stretch to say he lived crazy rich coming up.

Hedge funds and banks are a liability. The last thing the NBA or any sports league should do is get into unrelated businesses just because players want a lifetime babysitter, bondsman and banker. The NBA already funds a giant parasite in the form of the WNBA which makes no money, which is another liability. If the players union wants to do that then it's fine but there's a reason why they haven't either because it's a liability that could ruin them. I do think every sport should have a fund to help out players who are literally on the street and can't afford day-to-day expenses but anything beyond that could ruin them.

He isn't lucky. He was smart. Ali has somewhat of an excuse considering the time. Athletes these days don't have an excuse. Too many examples.

This is all simple. Every Person is conditioned in how they were brought up, what they do and so on. Vladtv had Robert Kiyoskai on and what he teaches: the school system is not going to teach deep financial literacy, just for people to get jobs. Athletes and Famous people are singled out because they making the most as: employees or self employed.. but it’s the same with regular people . People over the years don’t know where to look for financial literacy, they just go get another job or seek advice from people who don’t know deeply what’s go on… KZbin Fake by Robert Kiyoskai

LOL just a bunch of excuses. Keeping track of your money is easy. I keep all my expenses in my head and know what's coming in and out without even looking at my balance. Accountants are even needed for personal accounts.

There's a reason why Club Shay Shay is thriving and other people here have said it already. Shannon allows his guests to talk. What made that Katt Williams interview great, was that Shannon let Katt go. Vlad would've cut off Katt so many times
