John Skipper is so pleasant and well versed. Don't think I've ever seen someone just talk about something so grotesque in nature, yet it sounds so pleasant coming from him. Plus elite name, John Skipper.

Late to this, but want to point out... The academic standards thing isn't about optics, it's about the designation as a research school with certain accreditations. This opens up a HUGE pile of grant money that absolutely is a factor for the Big 10 and ACC schools. We're talking billions of dollars a year.

What is more likely is the ACC and PAC 12 are going to get raided by the B1G and the SEC as this consolidation process moves forward. As the financial disparity between the SEC and other "Power" conferences widens, disgruntled schools are going to start exploring other options. I think that once the dust settles the B1G and the SEC may be the only two power conferences left standing. The remnants of the PAC 12, Big 12, and the ACC will form the core of a second tier of college football. It may not happen all at once, but that seems to be the direction we are moving.

AAU: Association of American Universities. All Big 10 schools were AAU members at the time of acceptance into the conference. Nebraska eventually lost their membership. For the PAC 12, I think 9/12 schools are members.

Loved this convo, my biggest question would be that if a Kansas and the ACC decided to partner instead of adding a geographic and "rivalry" partner in West Virginia, where does West Virginia go? It would have to be the Big Ten right?
@semi6544
@semi6544 3 жыл бұрын
Creighton plays basketball in the Big East. Geography rarely matters if the conference is interested. West Virginia has been in the ACC and the Big East in the past couple of decades. I wonder if those conferences will remember how messy it was when West Virginia left.

@@cadengrace5466 -- I just repeated what John Skipper said in the video. Maybe the financial incentive wasn't enough to consider West Virginia then but it is now and was when they needed Louisville. They did need Louisville. Many people didn't respect the ACC as a Power 5 school in football at the time. There were only 2-3 competitive teams. Some combination of Florida State, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Miami. With only 2-3 really good wins in conference it was hard to compete with the Big 10, SEC, Big 12, and PAC 10/12 for playoff positioning. Even now Clemson can't afford losses. No 2 loss ACC team would ever get a playoff spot.

If B1G expands, it will be for more than two teams IMO. 4x16 is not a reality anymore. Which is fine by me. This guy knows what he's talking about, but the people asking question don't know what's going on.

Nonsense, OU loses no rivalries by moving to the SEC, and it re-gains two in the SEC when it gets there. With one non-conference game against OSU, and an East/West geographic split, OU can play in 4 rivalry games every single year now, instead of two.
