Since this movie was based on a stage play of the same name, just like a Beautiful Thing, it is very possible that this was seen by those who made SKAM and I am totally into the original Norwegian version of SKAM, with subtitels of course. Get Real first came out in 1998 and I remember going with several friends of mine and seeing it at an independent movie theater in West Hollywood. It was groundbreaking and it took the US until this year 2018 to distribute a mainstream film "Love, Simon" in which a gay boy and a gay relationship is at the center of a movie. So much for stupid American puritism in the guise of true Christianity.

I first saw this movie when I was 16 years old. I remember being really bummed with the ending especially after having seen Beautiful Thing. I'm 22 now, and I cannot love it more. There's so much to a relationship, and respecting yourself is just as important as respecting your partner. Strong message in this movie.

@@thu9312 I think the movie's ending has a lot of space to discuss, because while one of the characters is treat badly during the whole movie, at the end he comes out as who he really is. But at the same time, the other character keeps hiding himself. So is a little bit of a bittersweet ending in my opinion. It's not a good love story, but at least is happier-ish comparing to other LGBT+ movies where the gay characters end up dead

There are a lot of gay message movies, usually depressing, Brokeback Mountain, Call Me By Your Name and so on, I just wanted John to stand up to his homophobic friends , and he and Stephen to ride off into the sunset , not Steve & Linda❗️Like Love, Simon, not very realistic with a Hollywood ending but uplifting and happy . Another favorite that is hard to find is “Something Like Summer “, Terrific Check it out if you have not seen it❗️

I remember watching “Get Real” and “But I’m A Cheerleader” when I was still a child and been so inspired by the messages of self-love and self-acceptance that it helped me come out at the age of 9. I’m glad my first two LGBT-related movie experiences had such a positive outlook on homosexuality (even though not unrealistic as far as the struggles lived by the gay youth). I wonder if the first LGBT movie I’ve ever saw was “Boys Don’t Cry” or “Brokeback Mountain” if I would have the courage to come out at such a tender age

You know... when I first watched this movie loooong ago (during my teenage years), I didn't think much about it. I liked it, but that was it, nothing more. In those days films like "Beautiful Thing", "Latter Days", "Just a Question of Love", "Summer Storm", "No Night is Too Long", "Edge of Seventeen" and a bunch of others had a much greater impression on me. But for some reason they all kinda...faded away eventually (don't get me wrong, I still consider them all to be excellent films it's just emotionally I'm no longer as attached to them as I used to be). While at the same time I felt more and more drawn to "Get Real", kept rewatching its scenes to the extent I memorized some dialogues by heart. xD And it's not even a happy end movie, but I just like the characters and the acting and how they speak... it's just so... cute.:)

Even after all this time I’m still Mad that John let Stephen go I’m so desperate for a sequel 😂 bums me out more than the ending to Call Me By Your Name. I hate how so many new films and shows try and portray that gay life is all fun and easy and at the end you the gay protagonist always gets the guy who’s usually the closeted jock. Get Real and Call Me By Your Name show the true struggle not all this sappy stuff
