2:10 An eye doctor killing his patient? Man, I did not *see* that coming.

Giovanni I wouldn't go that far though. He died of complications. It's more like an unfortunate accident that Bach died. Rather than murder. But the doctor knew that he most likely would end up blind. I find it interesting that people did surgery with less than 30% chance of success....

So, this might be interesting for those of you that enjoyed this video. John Taylor is my 6x Great-Grandfather. There are not many of his direct descendants around but there are a few of us. We generally spend our time just randomly apologizing outside of concert halls. It is quite the legacy. Most of this video is...essentially true. There is of course more to the story than an 8 minute KZbin video can tell you, but this guy was a narcissist of unimaginable proportions and caused a lot of damage. Things are a bit more complicated though when you know his methods evolved dramatically over his life and he did make notable contributions to ophthalmology. The final thing that is of note, he certainly died poorer than he would have wished, but not as a 'nobody', His family used his connections and continued to practice ophthalmology for generations and held numerous royal and state posts. With each generation they became less quack and more doctor. I like to think of myself as the most doctor and least quack of them all. Hahahaha. He also unfortunately passed down his genetic eye problems. :( One final note, that book is a great read. Have a nice day!

WOW! I honestly feel bad for you.Not only is your 6x great grandfather a freaking super villain,but he also cursed you and the other descendants with his eye problems.I am honestly surprised no one else has commented though.I thought it was a big deal when I heard that a nice and respectful man like you is the 6x great grandchild of an evil and narcissistic man.I hope you and your other family members are doing well.

Can people please cut the droll "Haven't seen you/he was nowhere to be seen" jokes already? Enough is enough. I make occasional jokes about my own blindness, but more than 3 occurrences/variants of the same joke in the comments is really getting to be a drag, just like any other meme comments.
@StevePhillips6 жыл бұрын
I laugh at them jokes even though I'm partially sighted, but as you say enough is enough sometimes. Being blind in my left eye with low vision and chronic pain every day is not funny. But know one but the sufferer feels it. Trying to do shopping or travelling is very hard going as are many things in life trying to cope with sight loss since 1992 it began in 1979 with me when I was knocked off my motorcycle by drunk driver. I never fully recovered from my many injuries.

Pretty tough review of someone's actions so far back in history that makes it impossible to jump to (flipant) conclusions - but typical of your generation, that we now judge people in the past based on the priviliges you all enjoy today. According to written memoirs of those close to Bach & Handel, both were overweight, both drank and smoked, and apparently, both actually died from a stroke - generally something not associated with eye surgery but more likely cardio vascular issues (closely linked with bad diet, alcohol and smoking) and/or diabetes that both composers likely had (and were suggested as having) - giving rise to sight issues and the need for surgical intervention in the first place! Please consider the fact that technological progress usually starts with failure and misfortune. We didn't just "magic" ourselves to the extraordinary medical treatments we enjoy today. I had a stroke and survived it largely due to those early medical pioneers that, through trial and error, developed the skills and technology I was fortunate to receive. Skills and technology that could not have been available without those early pioneers like John Taylor. (Regardless of his questionable character that you also chose to mock). Perish the thought you should have to undergo some kind of amputation of a body part. Such a procedure can be accomplished today without the patient feeling anything and very little risk of death. Perish the thought that you condemn "Sir" James Syme(1799-1870) because his early amputations involved very little anesthetic and significant blood loss. Perish the thought.
