For those that doesn't know John Thompson,He is a hardass for a good reason.His biggest pet peeve is to see good talent go to waste so when he pose the question "why aren't you in the nba" is because John Thompson's feelings are hurt to see Rider took his promising NBA career for granted!John Thompson is such a great coach he cares more about his athletes than the game itself!

Definition of an enigma. Intelligent, articulate, a ton of personality - at the same time he was an immature knucklehead who didn't come into the league young (four year college senior). I suspect a vet wouldn't have been able to influence him to do the right thing early in his career.

Shame is he got kicked out of college- HIS SENIOR YEAR! Who does that shit!wait til your 4th year to fuck up. Like you said he was one of the MANY enigmas of the mid 90s-early 00s. John Thompson was 100% truth, no time or room for any if Rider's bull in this interview. It's ironic, but I went to the game in '93-'94 when JT brought his Hoyas to play UNLV and Rider lit them up in blowout win for the Rebels. For the interview, at this point in his career, Rider had been given so many opportunities. As a Laker fan, I was excited when they signed him. He'd be a force in the triangle playing alongside either Kobe or Fisher, or both of them with moving Kobe to the wing. But -- aside from a hella opening game @ Portland -- messed that up with his entire unprofessional attitude and wasn't even on active roster for the playoffs.

JR Rider was a great player who became a lost talent. His unprofessionalism and troubles escalated in Atlanta despite his most successful career run in Portland - the 1999 NBA Playoffs, but they hit rock bottom with no ability to co-exist with Shaq and Kobe in 2001 despite averaging nearly 8 points off the bench and while having the ability to play small forward or opposite Kobe in the backcourt. Lack of willingness to regularly show up in Denver sealed his career.

Well like Bob Whitsett said when JR played for Portland ..."Big game,big shot..Isaiah would take it and make it."NBA fans seemingly give Jason Kidd a pass when it comes to his transgressions.People including John Thompson RIP good man..come down hard on Rider.They both played High School ball near Oakland on the island of Alameda.Kidd had great court vision,passing ability,rebounds, and steals.Yet we should keep in mind that JR Rider was the second leader scorer in the nation at 29 ppg.JR Rider could shoot the rock better than Kidd,had a strong body, and could jump out of the gym.Yeah Rider made some mistakes, but he sounds intelligent enough to me. MJ told Rider that the league could be his one day.
@stampscapes15 жыл бұрын
Monster talent. Maybe not All Star talent but borderline and could have had a nice -solid- 12 year run in the league. That entire era was the era of the primadona in the league though. Just way too much expansion in the league to where rookies could be the best players on their team and maybe making more money on the team than veterans *and* the coaches (pre-current CBA). The leauge was to blame for a lot of this. Pre-expansion even great rookies would probably come off the bench.
