I'm reminded of the late Stephen Birmingham's novel "Carriage Trade" in which one of the characters, a wealthy woman, wasn't insecure. She carried a Chanel purse but had taken the "CC" logo off of it. I had never heard of anyone doing that before but I suspect that was based on someone in real-life. I've always remembered that detail from a novel I read many years ago.

Insecure: or from a 3rd world country, or 1st world poor people who want to look rich. It is a continual struggle for Louis Vuitton or Burberry to try and recapture their brands from the crappy Chinese etc. knockoffs. Nothing screams no taste or poverty stricken than someone wearing a luxe logo.

no such thing as good and bad taste - there is taste, and no taste - taste means you know what you like. if youre too oblivious to care about a particular subject, then you have no taste. An artist's journey basically consists of developing his/her skills and his/her taste. you cant make a decision about something unless you can decide if you like it or not. And a good artist achieves that magic of communicating his/her sense of beauty, i.e. 'this is what i LIKE - check it out'

I think the only John Waters movie I could watch without cringing or being mentally scarred is Hairspray--it actually sounds like a movie I want to see, and it has Divine! Obviously, he loves to shock people, even to the point where it might get on their nerves. Certain celebrities/directors kinda do that now, they just act like they invented the concept.
