I remember Billy Burton from the late 60s to early 70s as his 2 sons, Billy jr. (William H Burton) & David, were my best friends at the time in Panorama City, CA. They also have a sister, Heather. I remember Sr. & his brother Hal practicing stunts in their backyard on horses & trampolines. Us kids tried to emulate what they were doing and apparently it worked as the entire family were or still are involved in the stunt industry. It's funny but ever since knowing them, I've never been able to leave a theater without watching the end credits to see if any of them did stunts in the movie 🤣 They also used to have stunt competitions on TV to see who was the best stuntman in the world and I remember Sr winning it one year. He also used to hold the world record for the longest wheelie that he set on the Bonneville salt flats I think. Anyways, just reflecting back on my early childhood memories about my friends and family.

I really enjoy the interviews with the stunt performers, because they were witnesses to everything, It is their ability to design and execute these stunts that gave and give movies, and tv shows the flash, and fair, that made shows exciting to watch. They got to hear the conversations between the leads, directors and producers because they were on set, just in case. Also many of the stunt performers were also good actors, played supporting characters that made the leads look good. Some were so good they became leads themselves. Thanks for highlighting these individuals Rob, it gives a different flavor to hear their stories and explanations of how famous and memorable scenes were actually put together. The added benefit so many are just great story tellers.

I remember the scene in the bar with Wayne & Kirk. What caught my attention was Kirk's waist appears above the bar & I thought that's odd, so Wayne turns around goes towards the exit and his head is above the salon doors but when Kirk turns around & heads towards the door he becomes shorter & shorter & his head is below the salon doors. It's obvious Kirk was walking on a ramp and is much shorter than Wayne.

Another great interview. There was another former football great in The Undefeated -- Roman Gabriel, who played Blue Boy. I'd forgotten about Olsen being in the movie and my heart sank just a bit, thinking it was Gabriel he was talking about having passed. Both men delivered exceptionally good performances in the movie, which is one of my favorite John Wayne offerings, even though Rock Hudson's affected Southern accent is a little hard to take. LOL

I have a question have been a western never heard of it has Marlon Brando was Very surprised to see in one was Ben Johnson and Slim Pickens in it too , I don’t think he’s cowboy material much .How many westerns did he do ? I won’t be surprised if you say one because Ben and Slim are only guys that say cowboy here ! Also enjoyed Billy very much I was laughing out loud when he told story about Kirks height really good trying to get up to John Wayne’s height is so funny 😂! Thank You Billy Please write a book! I think you should also Ron and Thank You for your expertise!
@AWordonWesterns
@AWordonWesterns 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Toini. Yes, Billy should certainly write a book! The Brando movie you mentioned with Ben Johnson and Slim Pickens is called ONE-EYED JACKS (1961) and is a superior western. Stanley Kubrick was originally set to direct but he and Brando didn't get along and Brando took over as director. Much has been written about the movie and it's a fascinating tale. It is well worth searching out to screen. I must have watched it 20 times and look forward to more viewings! Other westerns with Brando include THE APPALOOSA (1966) with John Saxon (who comments about working with Brando in our AWOW interview) and THE MISSOURI BREAKS (1976) with Jack Nicholson, directed by Arthur Penn. Not a western is VIVA ZAPATA! (1952) directed by Elia Kazan but Brando sure looks cool in a big sombrero!

I wish you had said more about Ulzana‘s raid. It’s a funny thing about how all of these westerns wrongly portray the use of Gatling guns. I’m thinking of two movies. Two mules for Sister Sara and Veracruz. In real life, they operated like artillery pieces. They were stuck in place between two wheels. But every movie I’ve ever seen shows them getting unstuck and traversing from left to right or right to left. Has anyone ever pointed that out to you?

I'm probably going to butcher his name.....but Richard Jaekel....did that scene in 'Sometimes a Great Notion'....starring Henry Fonda & Paul Newman. The one where he was trapped beneath a log in the river, and the tide was rising. Paul Newman's trying to free him with a chainsaw. The log shifts, but pulls him under. NOT a western......but I'd love to hear you talk to anyone that knows about that scene.
