John Ford was a hard but very brilliant director. He knew how to get the best out of the actors that worked under him and he certainly knew how to get the best out of John Wayne. I can't think of any film that John Wayne doesn't look his best under Ford. Even his short casting in How the west was won. He knew how to give Wayne that edge that stood him above other actors...Mind you! John Wayne stood above most other actors anyway! He was not exactly a short man! What a true Legend of the silver screen! 👍

America’s greatest actor of his generation. Worked for John Ford on so many pictures. It’s hard for me to pick my favorite but The Quiet Man is my favorite. Great cast and Maureen and the Duke has such wonderful chemistry together. I’ve seen this film so many times and I never get tired of it. Rest In Peace Maureen and Duke. God Bless Them.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I worked at a store in Newport Beach where John Wayne was a customer. All of the people in the store said he was a very considerate person. I answered the phone once it was him and he was so polite even though he had a problem with one of his purchases. I liked many of his pictures especially 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'. However, I consider Joel McCrea as the quintessential american actor.

John Wayne was not a cowboy. I say this because it drives me nuts when people say he was not a good ( let alone great) actor. He was not into false noses and funny accents. He was a naturalistic actor just as good as Spencer Tracy. Of all the "golden age greats" he is the only one who still sells a gazillion DVDs and is ALWAYS on the Harris pole as one of the most popular stars ever. I wonder why that is?........oh yeah, he was great.

What I also love about Duke in his interviews and reminiscences is that he always remembers everyone's names and what they did and everything - he seemed very humble in the knowledge that each of these people contributing to his films were also contributing to the building up of his own legend. I guess it depends on how you define "great actor." The only knock against Wayne, IMO, is that he didn't have a great range-or for that matter, didn't seem to be interested in having a great range. But as far as the mechanics of acting--delivering his lines with natural inflection and emotion in line with the character, body language, facial expressions, interaction with other actors--I think he was a great actor. You can name a lot of actors who just "play themselves": Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, JC Van Damme. They're not great actors. Wayne starred in numerous critically acclaimed, objectively great films. Stagecoach, the Cavalry trilogy, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, Man who Shot Liberty Valance, etc. And those movies weren't great DESPITE him, they were great BECAUSE of him. He was a great actor. He was a smart man, he took his craft seriously, he worked hard and made many films, and he worked with many talented people. He learned his craft very well and he got good at it.

What do you mean, "Tommy Petersen" -- that "John Wayne was not a cowboy." He certainly WAS a cowboy when he played one on screen! He had a big Hereford Cattle Ranch in Arizona and ran that with two partners, he had a LOT of cowboy traits, humble, respectful of women on the ranch, kind to other actors when he worked, and much more. I met the man on the "Wild Goose" and he was nice as could be! NEVER egotistic or self-important. A very likable, humble man, who earned and got the respect of all around him.

he was sooo articulate! He was such a strong screen presence as seen especially in films like Red River. He is like a force of nature in that like a cowboy Darth Vader. Only the ending of that film seemed false because things wrapped up too nicely. Regardless Wayne was similar to Spencer Tracy in his naturalness and had way more range than Gary Cooper yet people tend to review his politics and not his talent. His Ethan Edwads was both hero and villain : not an easy task and I can't see anyone but Wayne in that role.

and was a good substitute for spence too in the high and the mighty judging from the films immense popularity at the time.tracy had to drop out and wayne as producer took his role over to massive acclaim at the time.and there are no scenes of mr wayne paralytically drunk in any of his movies unless he was playing drunk. poor spence is dubbed redubbed and voiced by someone else in parts of mmmmmmmm world and is brilliant but barely coherent in inheirit the wind and several other movies due to his massive drink problem both on and off set i love them both but wayne was much more respectful of his fans and the filmmakers to be ever less than professional not a critiscism of tracy as like ford he had by the 50s lost total control of his drinking and it affected his work and health. wayne liked a drink but ford and tracy werent just drinkers they would both book a hotel sit in the bath and drink bottle after bottle for days on end shitting puking and pissing over themselves til hospitalised.mr roberts was abandoned by ford due to drink .the horse soldiers was a disaster due to the highest fees paid to two movie stars 850000 dollars to wayne and holden each where he the master got 250000 for directing.he therefore decided to demean both actors by giving the two biggest action stars of the day ...no action. only western where wayne never holds a gun and holden is a doctor.ludicrous script wayne hates doctors for not saving his wife and the magnificent raid they go on is forgotten in a dull drama about these two he men bickering like children oh and holden discovers penicillin before the redeeming massive action packed finale which ford refused to shoot so was abandoned due to the avoidable death of a stuntman which ford very badly in the grips of alcholoism used as his excuse to walk.love spence love ford but just like the duke they had human failings.

Across Bayshore behind him was Harbor Island, Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, family house. We tore it down in 1983. Frank Lloyd built house, and John Wayne drove his boat over for get togethers.

I think Clint Eastwood passes Wayne only because Eastwood lived so much longer. I love both! And Jimmy Stewart!! One thing I notice, not enough exposure of Hollywood Leading Ladies...we had plenty Beautiful Bright Leading Ladies!!
