My dad was a parts manager for a Ford dealership in Casa Grande, Arizona. John Wayne owned a large cattle feedlot in Stanfield, Arizona. Wayne use to drive into town with one of his employees to have a work truck repaired. He would come into the parts department and chat with my dad while he waited on the repairs. One time he said to my dad that he was interested in all things automotive and if he could take a walk thru the parts bins. My dad responded sure go ahead, just don't touch anything! My dad, my brother and I were all big John Wayne fans. I was in college when my dad casually mentioned one day that Wayne had visited with him about 5-6 times over the years, but he just didn't feel it was that big of a deal. You see my dad was our real hero to my brother and I as he served 3 years in WWII, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Omaha Beach, 2nd wave and had met General George Patton twice. My dad lived to be 100yrs. old and 4 mos.

Doesn't let the facts get in the way of a story. The Mogambo clash was between star Clark Gable and director John Ford, not John Wayne. Wayne wasn't in even in Mogambo, and I don't think he ever appeared in a film with Gable. Wayne is said to have said some harsh things about Gable, and reportedly criticized him for being disloyal to Ford. It has also been said that Wayne strongly disliked Gene Hackman as an actor. But Hackman wasn't in The Searchers, which was released in 1956. Hackman's first screen credit was in 1964. He never appeared in a film with Wayne.

My dad was a World War II Marine Sergeant . He saw action all through the South Pacific including Iwo Jima. Dad recieved metals and written letters for his actions plus a Purple Heart. Dad never cared for Wayne called him a draft dodger . Movies and reality are not the same thing . Dad died in my arms of a heart attack at 52 . Most of his Military friends died early in life. Gram blamed it on the stress of the War. I'm 72 and haven't seen anyone that is half the man Dad was including myself .

Picking a fight with Hackman over acting was biting off more than anyone can chew. Gene is one of the finest ever and extremely under appreciated. Every role he's played you feel he's that person, with maybe the exception of Lex Luthor, although he pulled it off as well as anyone could.

Peter Boyle was offered the part of Popeye Doyle in the gritty crime drama The French Connection. He has just finished the violent movie Joe & didn't want to do another. The role went to Hackman & he never had to worry about being the lead role again. Both were in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein with Boyle playing the monster & Hackman playing a small but funny part of the blind recluse.

John Wayne tried to rush the stage in 1973 when Sacheen Littlefeather accepted the Oscar on behalf of Marlon Brando to turn down his Best Actor award for his performance in The Godfather, using the speech to call out the film industry's treatment of Native Americans. She said 6 security guards had to hold Wayne back. Wayne openly denounced rights for native Americans and stated in a Playboy interview, John Wayne said "Our so-called stealing of this country from (Native Americans) was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves." He was a mediocre actor and to be fair, imperfect like all humans. " I never thought of him as a hero. Wayne never enlisted for service in WW2 and even filed for a 3-A draft deferment, which meant that if the sole provider for a family of four were drafted, it would cause his family undue hardship. The closest he ever came to World War II service was portraying the actions of others on the silver screen. He only had one lung . But that was after 1964.

Around 1985 I, my Aunt, my girlfriend and my daughter had reservations at Mountain Shadows Scottsdale to celebrate my friend's birthday. Upon being seated we notice Mr. Wayne seated with a man and a woman. We noticed people constantly approaching him for autographs. I and my companions felt they should leave him alone. It was disturbing! But he graciously smiled chatted and signed. Upon leaving a man and woman stopped, chatted and then by one on each side he put his arms on shoulders and had a picture taken. Wow! I thought! How patient and considerate! I would have demanded privacy in a profane manner! By the way he was a very big guy.

John Wayne was born in 1907 and died in 1979, and in his 72 years of life, Mr. Wayne had the privilege of living through some of the most pivotal, and transformational times in modern American History. He commandeered a certain slice of Americana, and he also had a watchful eye on what many other components in America were going through. It can be truly said of John Wayne, that he deftly controlled his slice of the pie, while at the same time influencing many other sectors of Americana. Doctor George Whitehead

I like how they begin by explaining that John Wayne and Gene Hackman never acted in a film together and then go on as if it was Hackman and not Henry Fonda who played Col. Thursday in Ft. Apache. Wayne starred along side many famous actors, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, William Holden, Maureen O'Hara,Lee Marvin, Richard Widmark, Patricia Neal, Rock Hudson, Jim Hutton, Angie Dickinson, Robert Mitchum, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Jeffery Hunter to name just a few. He starred in "The War Wagon" opposite Kirk Douglas, who, as a liberal democrat was about as polar opposite politically from Wayne as anyone can get. Wayne was steadfast in his beliefs but as honest as the day is long. I sincerely hope no true fan of The Duke believes any of this crap. A true 28 minute waste of time.

Wayne was not just an actor who represented strength, the West, and American values. He often played parts where he could be vulnerable, intelligent, and caring. McClintok, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, True Grit, Rooster Cogburn, The Cowboys are some of the films where he went beyond a traditional genre playing parts requiring emotional involvement. Even as the Ringo Kid in Stagecoach Wayne showed early on how he could pull off communicating very real vulnerability and emotion. It is these abilities that made him a towering actor and not just a caricature of America and the West.

Lee Marvin was buried with his buddies in Arlington Cemetary, Jimmy Stewart who attained the rank of general, Gene Hackman when he was 16, he lied about his age and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1946, Audie Murphy became the most decorated soldier in history. Wayne didn't act, he had one character which he was given parts for. He was the product of a mythical USA and it's own self importance. John Ford originally felt contempt for Wayne who didn't serve during WW2. In their early projects others said Ford was purposely mean and degrading to Wayne until he got to know Wayne. For his part Wayne would never live down his failure to serve and caused a hyper nationality in the actor which was quite obnoxious.
