John Wayne Westerns, My Favorite 10

OK, here we go. This was not an easy task. Right now these are my top 10 choices for Wayne’s westerns. Ask me again in a few months. I have'nt ranked these as I love them all somewhat equally. I’d like to know your top 10 in the comments. Let’s have some fun today.

I loved your list. I would have made it a top 12 and added She wore a Yellow Ribbon and Big Jake.

As a kid, Angel and a Badman started my lifelong fan of John Wayne.

Some not on your list that I enjoyed: Chisum, Hondo, the Sons of Katie Elder, McClintock, and Big Jake. The supporting characters in these movies were wonderful. Wayne doesn't get enough credit for being an ensemble actor.

Interesting Choices. I always considered El Dorado (1966) and Rio Lobo (1970) to be remakes of Rio Bravo (1959). "Rio Bravo was so good they made it three times!"

That is a wonderful collection of Wayne movies. i could add a couple but wouldn't want to take any of these off.

Rio Bravo was enjoyable...but Wayne basically played Wayne. On the other hand, in "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" he played a man about a quarter of a century older than himself...splendidly. Along with "The Searchers" a role for which he deserved an Oscar nomination... YP

Great list - I would replace Ma Who Shot Liberty Valance with Hondo and the Cowboys with Big Jake but that is just me.

Nice list. Have never been a fan of Rio Bravo or El Dorado so would replace them with She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. Would like to get Hondo on my list as well.

I find it real hard to pick just 10 , your list is good but myself i would have to replace fort apache with Rio Grande , the cowboys with The Comancheros & True Grit with Big Jake

Hi, "Wrangler"..., Because of you and your "My Favorite 10" ( John Wayne ) movies..., I decided to watch the "Cowboys" again ! ! * You and the movie ( Cowboys ) changed my mind and now ( Cowboys ) is in my "TOP 10" John Wayne Western movies... * I "Thank You"... * Excellent video and very informative, and "Thank you" for sharing the video ! ! All great! Of these, my favorites would be Stagecoach, Rio Bravo and True Grit. The writing in these gave Wayne and his costars a chance to portray more well-rounded, engaging characters which adds to the appeal of a movie (to me).

I agree with your list as a very fine selection, but mine is a little different! Here it is in no order of preference. STAGE COACH, TALL IN THE SADDLE, The Spoilers, The Shepherd of the Hills, Red River, The Three Godfathers, The Horse Solider Trilogy (3 movies) Searchers, True Grit, The Shootist! I prefer John Wayne movies where he is more of the character & less of the John Wayne image!!

I thought Rio Grande was the best of the cavalry trilogy. Better than either Fort Apach or She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.
