its a play on words for them, his primary firearm is a 9mm which is 9×19mm Parabellum. Love they include the line" Guns, lots of guns" from the first matrix.

Exactly. I was about to say this same thing. His original explanation about it being two words is true if you're speaking about actions. As you say it's 9x19 9mm ammo. Which is not action but a thing. Oh well.
@B3RyL
@B3RyL Жыл бұрын
I'll only add that the 9x19mm Parabellum round was developed specifically for the German Luger automatic pistol back when Germany was still an empire deriving its roots from the Holy Roman Empire, and so the Latin phrase paid homage to that. After the war it became by far the most popular 9mm round, and quite possibly the most popular pistol round of all time.

Isn't it also called that based off the mathematical term "parabola" because of the shape of the lead bullet? I dunno if I'm just making shit up but for some reason my mind makes that connection.

The gun stuff at the beginning when John Wick was crafting a revolver was a throwback/reference to "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" when Clint Eastwood's character was cleaning his gun and heard people outside his door. The clicking revolver chamber was from the same movie when Eli Wallach made the same motion constructing his own custom revolver. EDIT: Also, Iron Chef doesn't f*ck around.

The clicking was so he could test the timing of the cylinder
@tuckerrichardson2606
@tuckerrichardson2606 Жыл бұрын
To add to the other comment on your post, what is timing? Which is what he was checking in the beginning. On a revolver this is all revolvers but older styles like the one in the movie especially, have allot of stuff going on inside them, the cylinder is basically the chamber of the weapon which houses the cartridge when firing, on other styles of firearm the chamber and barrel are of one piece so they are already aligned and ready to go but on revolvers the cylinder is the chamber and the timing of it is talking about how when you pull the hammer back the gears start moving is everything doing its job properly and aligning the cylinder with the barrel. If it is not timed properly then the cylinder will be either a little before or a little after the barrel, which can either mean a misfire at best or the bullet striking the side of the barrel at worst, resulting in a catastrophic failure that you do not want happening while its in your hand.

Winston's "betrayal" is a ruse. There is a split second where Winston gives a very slight nod to John before he shoots him. Also, he shoots center mass instead of a headshot. Winston knows that the suit is bulletproof for small caliber rounds.

You are right about the Latin phrase, "Si vis pacem, para bellum", "if you want peace, prepare for war". But it's also a reference to the 9 x 19 mm cartridge, commercially is sold as 9 mm Parabellum, that's how they print it on the boxes. Great video as always guys!
@jamessullivan4988
@jamessullivan4988 Жыл бұрын
The use of Parabellum (literally "for war") as a single word, related to firearms, appears to have originated with the branding of the 9mm Luger (9x19mm) cartridge in the early 1900s. It was...as observed by George...derived from the use of the Latin phrase "Si vis pacem, para bellum" ( if you want peace, prepare for war) which was used as a corporate motto of the manufacturer of the cartridge, and the Lugar pistol, German arms company Deuche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken. Other rounds and weapons subsequently used the Latin "for war" moniker.

I think with Winston shooting John, he was trying to get him off the roof alive, as he assumed that he'd have the armoured suit on still, so the shots wouldn't do as much damage. There are some call backs to Keanu's filmography between this & JW2, the part where he tells Winston he wants "Guns, lots of guns" is taken directly from The Matrix when they attempt to rescue Morpheous.

It's the most American-feeling of his action movies and makes for a good transition into his other work for people who've never delved into Asian cinema. However, I think we can all agree that Mission Impossible 2 can just be skipped in his filmography...forever. There's nothing to see there. 😆

10:30 from what I understand, an _Adjudicator_ is like a private detective... they are sent in when something goes wrong to basically figure out who is to blame. in an environment so down-to-business like this, with military-level record keeping and such a level of organization, there's no need to send a full-sized intervention, because if anyone was to mess with this woman in the slightest, they'd all be done for, as it would be expected that everyone up the ladder knows that this woman is sent here, and here she is, so if she fails to report back, that means something happened to her and someone is trying to cover it up. compare this with the movie The Equalizer, where the one guy they send in to sort the mess out is at the same time detective and strike team.... that would be an _Inquisitor_ a lesser operative would be an _Emissary_ or an _Ambassador:_ observe and project directives, but don't intervene.

Watching the movie this time and seeing Winston hold the gun towards the end I’m wondering if the gun was loaded with blanks. He directed John to that side of the building so he figured that side gave John the best chance of survival. One thing I’ve thought about this film is that guy had every right to attack John in the library for the 14 million dollar bounty. That was for killing Santino’s wife and doubled for killing Santino. The hour was for the excommunicado which meant he had access to all services that were part of the Continental until 6pm.

Parabellum in english is written as one word. In latin it's para bellum (prepare for war, in latin). Which is the second half of the entire phrase "If you want peace, prepare for war". However Parabellum is also a type of cartridge used in firearms...like the 9mm Parabellum.

When he is turning the cylinder on the revolver, he's checking the timing. Basically, making sure everything lines up correctly when the cylinder rotates. If it doesn't, he's not gonna have a good time.

'Parabellum' is like 'full metal jacket'. Both are movie titles, both drove the press crazy trying to figure out the meaning, ad both are references to bullet types. 'Parabellum' is a combat round for a 9mm pistol, 'full metal jacket' describes a rifle bullet whose core is encased in a copper coating.

Winston knew John was wearing bullet proof armor and he knew he would survive the fall. He was doing what he could to save John. BTW, John Wick 4 comes to theaters on March 24.

There is the high table with the 12 most prominent crime families, and beneath are some organizations like the Bowery which deals with informations, The Continental Hotels which are like a sub contractor etc. There is also no point in killing the Adjudicator, they will just send another one and it would only aggravate the conflict for no reasons

You'd be surprised how well shinobi blends within a society, meaning they can be anyone. Perhaps they apply the same thing here, which is why a beggar could also be an assassin, maybe it's the trend or uniform of their faction.

George referring to the "Prepare for war" Latin phrase is "Si vis pacem, para bellum" meaning "If you want peace, prepare for war". Parabellum in this instance is in reference to the 9mm (9×19mm) Parabellum pistol cartridge. It was created by Georg Luger and is also known as the 9mm Luger. The "Parabellum" reference comes from the motto of Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Aktiengesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions Factory) which is "Si vis pacem, para bellum".

The fall is actually very much survivable but you'd need a few months in the hospital. He's not falling from ten stories. He's having several small falls onto the stairs, ceiling and alike, meaning he breaks bones but not ever getting enough speed to hit terminal velocity.

A strong theory for the end as to why Winston shot John is that it actually wasn’t a betrayal. Notice the concierge said, “Well played, sir.” to Winston as if Winston did in fact pull off a clever tactic. Notice Winston only shot John in the chest area where he’s wearing the armored suit. Winston could’ve simply shot John in the head and boom that’s it. But no, he shot him in the chest, leading him towards the side of HIS building where there were stairs and scaffoldings to “cushion” John’s fall giving him some form of survivability. Winston shot John only to keep up appearances for the adjudicator and the High Table. Winston is doing this probably to stay inside the High Table’s ranks just to keep up with intel.

I love how when Halle and Keanu are about to leave the mint one of the dogs jumps in the drivers window and Halle has to lean forward to give him room to get by. I don’t know if that was on purpose or if they were both supposed to go through the back window. Either way, I love seeing well trained dogs getting to show off their talents. Bite work training is so goddamn fun, as long as you aren’t the one catching the dogs lol

@George Parabellum, as one word, comes from the 9mm Parabellum pistol cartridge. Also known as 9mm Luger and 9x19mm or just 9mm, it is the most used amunition for pistols and submachine guns ;.... ... in the world.
