I agree he knew his son sign his own death warrant, and if he tried to stop him his army and him would die beside him. but he was forced into an unwinable situation, let john kill his son and thus show weakness or hope against lottery odds he will kill john wicks. it wasn't the car that was the issue if he had stolen that john would simply demand it back ,which off course would have happened with a truck full of gold as a sweetener. but he kill his dog...the final gift by john late wife and the only connection he had of her..that was the point of no return.

It's implied that the "impossible task" was assassinating all of his rivals in one night. We find out later that he used connections to help him do it, but the sheer fact that he could pull this off regardless makes Viggo realize that he CANNOT cross this man at all costs. If he could eliminate his rivals this quickly, he could easily do the same to Viggo no matter how many men he had at his disposal. And this meant of course that he would never have enough men to stop John from killing Iosef.

I love how in this scene we see that Viggo also honored the deal with John, and that’s part of the reason he’s so angry with his son. John succeeded in the impossible task, and as payment Viggo not only let him go but left him alone for essentially laying the foundation of his criminal empire. It’s clear that Viggo still keeps tabs on John (he knew his wife had just died) not only because he was a past associate but because he knows just how freakishly dangerous he is. And now, his son not only signed his own death warrant but dishonored his fathers deal and word he gave to John that he’d leave him and his family alone. So many layers to the anger Viggo has when he figures out what his son did.

Exactly! And when O’Reilly punches Yosef at the shop and got snitched to Viggo about, as soon as he told Viggo about the incident, Viggo didn’t even think about punishing him for punching his son he was just horrified at the realization of the impending shit storm that was about to happen especially when O’Reilly told him that his dumbass son killed John Wick’s dog. The car could have been returned with his son getting an ass whooping and maybe some compensation for John’s troubles but the dog was definitely what set John off big time

Let's be honest, it was probably the most free he felt in that moment. Complete control gone and out of your hands. All you can do is share a final drink, tell your kid what's to come and have your broker there to watch what happens when you tow a line you can't see. My buddy stepped on some toes when I was a younger man. He came to me to see if I could broker a deal, I couldn't. I didn't. He fucked up. All I did was leave town until things idk, happened. The next time I saw my friend, he wasn't really there. The best thing in life is to always be aware of your actions. Or we'll, others reactions I guess.

The perfect dialogue delivery by Michael Nyqvist is what made me fall in love with this scene first and the franchise. The way he described John Wick literally added life to his character and created the whole terror/awe in the mind of the viewers as to who John was and what he is capable of. To top it off, the amazing background score 'Story of Wick' by Tyler Bates just makes the scene send a chill down the spine. The funny part is , while Viggo absolutely looked terrified of what he saw coming considering his son had awakened the sleeping giant and explaining his son to prepare for his funeral ,yet there his arrogant dumb son thinks he still has a chance by saying,he can make things right by finishing what he started. What a character 😂😂Every time the hammer hit the ground, it sounded like Wick hammering a nail through the coffin of everyone who was standing in his way. His son's eyes and his expression when Viggo uttered the most deadly line -'John will come for you ' is perhaps one of the best parts of the scene! 🙌

Until this point in the movie, it looks like it's going to be a The Lake House-like movie, one of those few lighter, non-action movies that Keanu Reeves did. There's a lot of suspense about his character, but nothing that suggests he is a god-given talent, coldblooded killer. And then, at this very scene, with Viggo's lines, The movie literally switches on to what it actually is. This is 'Marlon Brando in The Godfather's first scene' levels of good.

One of the best character introductions ever. Before this scene the audience only sees John as a grieving vulnerable man. And then boom it sets off his entire legend on overdrive.

The sad thing is, Viggo only fought John in the end AFTER his son, and possibly most of his empire, was already dead. He surely knew there was no escape or negotiation out of that situation. He was THAT scared of John.

I love how Viggo gave his son a drink right before punching in the gut. I love the dialogue between the father and son. Viggo understands the magnitude of the problem and he knew that his son would not live through this. And though he did everything in his power to protect his son, but he knew very well there was nothing he’d could do.

No, probably not. Because for all we know, "Baba Yaga" John Wick could be someone entirely different from "Retired" John Wick. The reason why we root for John so hard in the beginning because he faced the horrendous and unjust tragedy of losing his dog after the passing of his wife. And this is further maintained by the fact that in both Chapter 2 and Parabellum, we're still reminded of that tragedy. "Retired" John Wick is a cold-blooded assassin who's bent on vengeance, while "Baba Yaga" John Wick is a cold-blooded assassin who probably didn't have a concrete reason to fight, aside from perhaps pure survival in the crime world. While I'm not dismissing the fact that the idea would be good, it makes for too much of a risk of uprooting our established beliefs of John. If we knew who he *really* was, we might come to regret rooting for this assassin and we might even believe that we were condoning his murders.

1:57 Imma say it again This right there is the perfect representation of the whole 3 movies. From the light to the darkness, and there's no way back. You could argue too that the fact the light is present only in a very small part of the screen means there's no more light into John's life anyway. And he actually hesitates for a very brief moment before diving right into it. And to quote Winston : "You dip much as a pinky in this pond, you may well find something reaches out and drags you back into its depths" Damn I love this very simple scene

Watching this ahead of going to see Chapter 4 and it truly never gets old. So many classic lines in this scene but my favourite is always: “And you will do nothing, because you *can* do nothing.” That sense of inevitability and impending doom. Then you know you’re not watching a regular old action movie like you expected, you’re there like “what have I just walked into.” Classic.

I’m a Russian Mob Boss’s right hand man. I noticed he’s very worried, frightened, and sad during an otherwise triumphant occasion. His son walks in, gets punched in the stomach and then, me and him listen to a very short story about one extremely dangerous “nobody” his father knew… the very same one that the manchild in fact just gave him nothing left to lose or live for. So get Allstate life insurance and get your affairs in order… because that isn’t mayhem (like me) coming after you; it’s the Angel of Death himself checking off his personal shit list!

What makes this film effective is the fact what we _don't_ see. We hear about an impossible mission, but we're never told or shown the details. We're told hints about John's past, but we only ever see him post-retirement. We're shown glimpses of an assassin underworld, but we know it's a tip of a much larger iceberg, and that's what makes it intriguing. It's these elements of mystery that make this story (a) more focused, and (b) more compelling, as it becomes more of a character story and less of a world-building exercise. I kind of wish the sequels had revealed less about the underworld's inner workings, though I understand why they chose to go the route they did. They were still enjoyable - though IMO the first film is still the best.

I agree with the post that the first movie was the best. It’s alluding to the criminal underworld with hints was a master class I loved it as an introduction to this world. The second film built on the world a little bit and kept things still mysterious with markers, although I think they showed to much to fast by the third film, so by the fourth I think they reeled it back a little bit but it was a little far gone. The fifth I think will just be in the same universe with the daughter I forget her name and the blind man I think he was named kang. Although I’d love to see some prequels of Jon wick although if I remember the comic prequels we’re somewhat lacklustre in my opinion so I’m a little sceptical to how good they’d be

I teach some film theory and I use this film as the perfect example of show but don’t tell. Aside from this small scene there is no unneeded exposition. It gives the audience credit and reward for their ability to listen and understand. It’s what makes this film infinitely watchable. A true classic.

Viggo truly liked and respected John. That's why he never approaches him with any hatred through the whole movie. It's like a frustration that he has to keep trying to kill him. He really doesn't want to. The only reason he tries to have John killed is his duty as a father to protect his son, even though he eventually decides his son doesn't deserve it.
