It is a testament to his level of artistry that he was able to silence a naturally rowdy crowd. Playing that perfectly is a form of hypnosis. Dead silence for 10 minutes? in a jazz club?? Incredible.
@alvodin6197 Жыл бұрын
That wasn't his point at all. Which you would get if you heard him criticize classical tradition. The point was to have a moderate crowd who weren't too load but aren't pretending like they are in church.

A very interesting look into the enigmatic John Williams. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be contemporary with his rise in the public eye (and ear), have him to thank for our love of the music and its instrument, the guitar. At first he appears distant, but it's just his humility. Actually, ask him a question, and he'll engage with you without hesitation. He (and Julian Bream) put something into motion, that I'd bet, they themselves were not even aware of at the time (although they did work very hard at it). They, like Segovia before them, inspired an entire generation of classical guitarists. Thank you John! You're a really cool and hard act to follow! Brilliant, as always. Note: "Scherzino Mexicano" 40:24.

Well, John Williams may have spent most all of his life in London, England and consider himself a 'Londoner' I will always consider him one of our, Australia's, finest artistic exports. Thank you, allegrofilms for this great showing of Mr. Williams in so many different contexts and ways. He truly is one amazing guitarist but, quite possibly more importantly, an amazingly humble and decent man.

The breadth of Williams recordings has amazed me for decades. He believes in recording more than the same old often recorded songs. He has done this for a very long time. And he has had fun doing it along the way.

This documentary is a masterpiece in so many ways and while not being jazz per se it is totally imbued by the spirit and freedom of jazz. John Williams was the Andrés Segovia of his day and Ronnie Scott the dean of European tenor saxophonists not to mention a world class wit who established the club named after him where jazz royalty played night after night since day one. To watch him discussing frankly with John Williams about their common passion for real music regardless of style is a real treat and JW's (thankfully unedited) performances are priceless gems. So thank you John, Ronnie and Christopher Nupen (the director who studied guitar with JW under Andrés Segovia) for this wonderful musical and intellectual offering.

The appears to be nice re-emergence of interest in John Williams which is great: More and more younger musicians; mostly male guitarists are being inspired by his unorthodox methods of playing: John Williams is personally responsible for my re-interest in guitar and ukulele: Ive been playing over 20 years and fell into a dry spot a while back: One listen of Cavatina put me back in my place: I grabbed the notes online and printed them out: Hes a genuine born musician: When he plays he paints a sonic canvas for me:

John Williams; foi na minha opinião o mais notável aluno de Segóvia. Teve uma grande ascensão nos anos 70 e 80. Mas parou por aí. Claro que aqui no Brasil temos ótimos violonistas; mas John Williams não era só técnico; ele tinha um toque sonoro em seu violão e uma interpretação notável; principalmente nas suítes de Bach.

+MrMjp58 That is correct about Ronnie Scott: Ronnie knew immediately upon watching John Williams in 1969: John Williams became the first classical musician to appear at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London solo and live: Instantly recognizing his ability and talent in his complex; unique - unorthodox playing techniques [Ronnie] realized he had a lot more to learn and seized the opportunity: They both played ensembles in practice a few times but even more so they did it with Ronnie playing one style of music and John another: Each one learning from each others sound: Great insight:
