You can tell this is Williams in his early days, his conducting lacks the grace that he has nowadays, this is before he and Jerry Goldsmith took classes to improve their conducting in 1989 to 1990.

Technically perfect - no surprise, they are members of the Boston Symphony - but it simply doesn’t have the flavor of the West, the way several other examples on YT have caught it. I taught myself a piano version of it; it’s more difficult than it seems because the strings and the brass are playing in two different rhythms. It’s actually a terrible rendition. A magnificent score though. Very few movie themes can top this one. Bernstein was a great composer, but he's an awful conductor - the brass and strings are in different time signatures, and it almost falls apart a few times. But I'm just nitpicking - this music makes you want to ride a horse into the sunset!
