Frank Furedi is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent. He is author of 17 books including Paranoid Parenting, Culture of Fear and Politics of Fear: Beyond Left and Right. Frank regularly comments on radio and TV in the UK, and has been interviewed by the media in Australia, Canada, the United States, Poland, Holland, Belgium and Germany.
He and John discuss the current state of our universities, increasing restraints on freedom of speech, identity politics and victimhood culture.

Frank is the best of genuine public intellectuals. He tells you what you already knew, but didn't actually know, so to speak. I'm lucky: he's been a key influence on me for over 30 years, starting at a time when he was the most inspiring, groundbreaking Marxist of the 80s and 90s. As a communist activist then, his intellect and leadership was inspiring, open and free-thinking. As a psychotherapist today, I can also say - and this is heresy in my line of work - that his attack on 'therapy culture' is spot on. And yes, I can confirm that he's a lovely man. The thinking left and the thinking right have new areas on which to unite, and, together, they're called democracy.

John, I absolutely love your videos, excellent conversations. And on your point of values, I ask people to imagine a ven diagram of values between those who describe themselves as left or right…in today’s society many of the fundamental values people really care about are common between both sides. Only some very specific points fall outside of those common values in most cases. And then to compliment this, most people, left or right, would agree we are not pursuing and embodying these values to a satisfactory level as a society. 90% of us have a great deal in common. A determined and misguided 10% are derailing society, and are doing so in belief they know what’s righteous and are doing good. But some kind of false decency prevents many people from challenging them because they do not want to challenge someone that is claiming to have “good” intentions for fear of appearing to have “bad” intentions.

Hugely interesting. Thank you. Furedi covered ground I thought I understood well but he brought a deep insight into so many things which I found fascinating. His take on children constantly being validated by parents (and their teachers at school) leading to biologically mature children ending up at university demanding safe spaces was well observed. I also liked that, unlike many, he didn't assume there was some sort of conspiracy by "the elites". I think he said it was not a conscious strategy but something in the zeitgeist, which is a lot more plausible. I thought his point about being judged by identity rather than accomplishments is so important as was his comment that id politics emphasises difference and that anything we have in common with others is diminished. So no longer can I ask "What is it to be British?" and that our points of contact with others in society (ie our solidarity with our communities) is constantly being challenged. Thank you again. I shall be buying your latest book "How Fear Works".

The problem with the Left - Right paradigm is that it is a bad categorization. The politic can be better understood in terms of an ethical vs juristic society. An ethical society has laws based on desires of men, a juristic society is based on principle - the principle of universal law and is scientific. "You would not want to live in an ethical society" - Kant - Metaphysics Of Morals. Kant says three kinds of societies exist: Ethical, Despotic and Juristic. Kant is a giant among thinkers and his books: Metaphysics Of Morals, Foundations for Metaphysics of Morals and Religion Within Bounds Of Mere Reason are the best writings on political theory and law I have ever read by a long shot and I've read much of the classics on this.

Let's remember that Furedi was a founding member of the UK's Revolutionary Communist Party. Based on this interview (and others) he seems to have moderated his views, but he and his mates were instrumental in initiating the societal decline that we are now experiencing. All of today's radical feminism, cultural marxism, radical environmentalism, and so on, can be traced back to the socialist and trotskyist radicals of the 60s and 70s, like Frank Furedi.

Hungary and Russia are actively disliked because they both insist that "The country" is central. e.g. Russia has a policy of, regardless of your ethnicity, of which there are some 120 in Russia, you are first and foremost Russian.
