Viewer Question:
Jamie Martin - Greetings from Ireland! Hey John & Crew, did you guys see over the weekend that Avatar surpassed Force Awakens as the fourth highest grossing movie at the box office? I just find it really funny the people still trying to make this movie out as a flop. Do you think there is more of a possibility of it beating Titanic at the third spot? Thanks and bring on the filthy.

James Cameron is such an enigma. He did not only direct 3 of the top 4 highest grossing films of all time but each movie was an Acadamy Award best picture nominee as well. To put it in perspective, out of the 10 ten grossing films only the 3 James Cameron movies have that distinction. Out of the 20, it is only joined by Top Gun: Maverick and Black Panther.

The answer to how he works is quite funny. The only thing he does is wait for an empty seating during a winter and creates what was known as spectacle back in the day. Regardless of the use of cgi, it’s reliant on showing an audience something that’s been created with a modicum of thought. It’s about a creature’s place amongst nature, but unlike a lot of its contemporaries, it doesn’t slap a load of half-finished CGI in the frame for no reason. It has its own topology, trivia etc. it’s a universe. It’s not a universe in that “the films are connected” like Marvel and Godzilla, it’s a universe in that it’s a thriving place that’s been created by artists. If you look at it, films that take place in a universe have their flaws within how the films connect together. Civil War is massively flawed when you bring in what happened beforehand. Endgame is flawed when you bring in the Civil War history etc. Warner Bros can’t even make a universe without swapping pieces in and out when they don’t need to be. The Godzilla series has three films that connect and Godzilla Vs Kong that feels nothing like the others. And these are the Only Successful universe movies. Avatar is its own universe in that it has moving parts that connect. The films themselves are not the moving parts.

@@TheFlash-rh2el Avatar sold over 8 million copies on bluray (and over 10 million on DVD) in the US. No other movie since 2009 has topped its sales. In fact, I think Avatar is like somewhere in the top 5 of most sold movie on home video of all time. Trust me, this movie is well loved or else people wouldn't have rushed out to buy it. Endgame sold like 3.8 million copies and Force Awakens couldn't even top it with 5.3 million. No blockbuster movie gets release side by side with another. You'll never see Jurassic Park next to a Marvel movie, for example. Everyone knows this.....the producers, all of them, want their big movies to take in the potential cash. If Avatar was going to flop, it would have flopped whether it released at Christmas or the summer....man people always just reach out of their ass.

To me, James Cameron is in the Mount Rushmore of directors, along with Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Ridley Scott and many other masters of their craft, this man have never failed to give us something amazing, Since the Original Terminator to Avatar the Way of Water is just banger after banger, he earned our trust and this is why despite you don't see many you tubers making content about Avatar the same way they do for the MCU or DC, how many times we have seen people saying they will support anything these 2 does, and eventually just not even go and watch it....while if James Cameron is directing a project, everyone knows you will get something special and this is why we support everything this man does because you never get his 20%, 70%, 55% no, when Jimmy Cameron do a film he goes 10000% IN and you feel every damn frame was cared to perfection or not get out to the public, reason I will laugh when Disney realize that 2024 may not have an Avatar film if James says.............it could look BETTER XD....mark my words 🤣....And the crazy thing is, we will wait happily. So I know we say no chance in hell Avatar will catch to Endgame...........but..........at this point.........I will not bet against Cameron if it does XD.

I think the reason James Cameron is the amazing director that he is is that he knows how to deliver a truly great moviegoing experience through pure raw thrills, I know there’s a lot of pretentious “Intellectuals” out there who think that the only sign of quality in movies is when they’re made with these deep, complex themes and ideas but that’s not how it is at all, and I love James Cameron because he completely pisses on those peoples’ beliefs, movies like Terminator or Aliens aren’t super deep or anything but he knows how to deliver a great moviegoing experience through pure excitement, he recognizes that a great moviegoing experience doesn’t just involve walking away from it pondering this deep question about the world around you or anything, he likes to just let people walk out of his movies going “Oh my god that was so cool” I’m glad we still have filmmakers like him that still maintain giving us great movies that are still fun action movies and don’t feel like they have to be Christopher Nolan type stories in order to be good

Thank u! U r spot on. It annoys me to no end when film snobs complain that the plot was done b4, as if we can't name about a dozen other movies that all have the same or similar plots. It happens sometimes. What people neglect to mention is that Cameron was sitting on this movie for decades b4 he was actually able to make it, so it makes sense that by the time it came out, the plot had already been recycled a few times. But that doesn't detract from the visual masterpiece of the film and the incredible world building and cinematography. Because what Cameron has been able to create is visually spectacular and groundbreaking, regardless of the simplicity and familiarity of the plot. The simple story allows u to get engrossed in the film and story easily while ur mind appreciates the visuals. And like u said, it's just an amazing movie going experience! These movie snobs seem to forget that some people go to the movies simply to be entertained and have fun. They don't always want some deep intellectual subplot. Sometimes less is more. I've been completely bored to tears by some films that do too much or require too much introspective thought. A movie doesn't always need a deep plot to be good, and Cameron has certainly found the formula that allows him to comfortably tow the line of interesting story that is both engaging and entertaining.

Yes! Well done Avatar! It just keeps on going. Reminds me a lot of the original Avatar, though Way of Water won't be in theatres for as long. Huge fan of these films. There is not doubt that the other films will also hit and pass 2 billion dollars at this point, especially with theatres getting closer and closer to their pre-pandemic levels. Not sure why anyone would be rooting against these films. The more successful they are the better it is for us audience members it just shows that studios that non established IP's can bring in lots of money. Hopefully that will mean directors and studios willing to direct and back original IP's and bring some more fresh content to the big screens! Avatar is so unique and so well thought out as far as world building in concerned. There is no planet ever conceived that is as richly detailed as Pandora (Not even in Star Wars)! The world is so immersive and the characters feel so relatable while also being very unique and the fact it doesn't touch on any one race since they are alien. Anyone can easily insert themselves into the world and relate with it. This is why these films has been so successful. It touches on themes that we can all relate to and understand no matter who or where your from. I don't understand why Avatar gets so much dislike for a "Basic" story when thousands of extremely popular films have "basic" stories as well. Again having a simple story doesn't make the film bad and in Avatars case it helps it connect with a broader audience which is one of the reasons it is so successful. Avatar also has many very unique elements which are overlooked or made fun simply because critics don't understand them or they are afraid of ridicule. "What, you like 10ft tall space smurfs?". Avatar is all about being open to one another and connecting and that seems to be something that us as humans are starting to lack or loose as we continue to evolve in an ever more technological world. As we watch these film we can all feel connected without having to expose ourselves to criticism. We remember that people like to connect and it's not a weakness nor something to be made fun of but something to be embraced and that is Avatars greatest message. Don't be afraid of who you are, don't be afraid to open yourself up to others and understand new viewpoints and connect!

As a technocrat, filmmaker Cameron is second to none. The innovators that stand out to me are George Melies, Orson Welles, Ray Harryhausen, George Lucas and James Cameron. Lucas will be remembered for Star Wars of course but history will mostly shine on what he had to do with both sound and visuals to make those films happen. Cameron's the kind of man not content to just make a "Titanic" film, his curiosity eventually drove him to go down to the bottom of that part of the ocean to actually check out the real thing. That kind of curiosity and entertainment visuals are what drive people to Cameron films, he's trusted to make his films look and feel real. Those men changed movie making on a technical level, especially sci-fi and fantasy films with amazing leaps forward. There are more game changers I'm leaving out and apologize for missing 'em. Just a fan after all. I still don't share Rob's trust in Cameron's storytelling skills quite as much though. The most daunting story to pull off was Titanic which starts with class struggle, moves to love story, veers to adventure then bitter sweet tragedy. Considering the length of the film, all those stops and the horrific real life events which made the story delicate, I wouldn't blame any producer if they threw a director out of their office for even suggesting such a thing. That screenplay could easily have been a mess, so I've got to have faith in Cameron's 4 quadrant appeal. However, I still believe It's the curiosity factor and amazing innovation that sell his films in such a wild way.

The MCU had a decade before endgame, so Avatar has just enough time to see where it’ll go so never doubt James Cameron. This is amazing and not trying to diminish Avatar 2 in any way. It's one of the greatest films I have ever seen. But reality is this: Titanic actually has $3.26B worldwide adjusted for inflation. So Avatar 2 is over one billion away. Those are crazy ticket sales. And the original Avatar has a WHOPPING $3.9B (so does Gone with the Wind, just edging Avatar out); those 2 being the biggest grossing films in existence. So in reality, Avatar 2 is nowhere close to the original Avatar and just goes to show just how HUGE the original movie was on a worldwide scale. I'd argue Titanic is STILL the greatest achievement in box office ever as it did those whopping numbers without 3D. It's WAY ahead of Avatar in terms of ticket sales.

There was a massive amount of hype for The Force Awakens before launch because it was the first Star Wars movie since the prequels and because some beloved characters from the original trilogy were returning. On top of that it was getting really good reviews, and still in fact has high critic (93%) and audience (85%) scores on Rotten Tomatoes. In retrospect I think a lot of what went wrong with the sequel trilogy was because of the foundation TFA built, so I don't think it's a great Star Wars film, but the hype and the fact that it did go over well with most people is why it there was a lot of ticket sales. Speaking of hype, The Phantom Menace also broke a bunch of box office records when it released despite getting a lot of poor critical reviews and largely being disliked by fans who grew up wiith the original trilogy films. Franchise films sometimes have the benefit of doing very well at the box office despite mixed critical and audience reactions, because they also ride on the excitement generated by previous films.
