As a few of you have already pointed out, there's an error on the top five chart. I forgot to swap out M3GAN's gross, which should be $6,258,245. Every time I think I can maybe do one episode without screwing something up, I'm proven wrong. i'm so glad Avatar: The Way of Water has done what was mostly expected and made a lot of money, not because i love the film (i do like it) but because of all the false narratives that were created just to get clicks and pander to people who just exist to hate on things in general.

Unfortunately, those false narratives did what they were designed to do, which is to generate clicks, attention, and revenue. When talking about the legs for Puss n' Boots, it's worth pointing out the usual weekend it opened during - Christmas weekend AND a massive snowstorm that totally depressed the openings for films that weekend. A good example: Babylon even has a 4.26 multiplier, which is approaching the top 5 of 2022 (nearly at Elvis territory), and of course we know that film is no success story. Just a lot of factors to consider. Had that massive snowstorm not hit, PNB would've opened bigger, which would've reduced that legs multiplier.

One element of ATWOW's performance that isn't generating as much comment as it probably should is that it's going to ultimately finish close to the gross of its predecessor than that of any other sequel to a movie that's held the title of highest grossing film of all time or near to it. ATWOW is going to be closer to Avatar than The Godfather Part 2 was to The Godfather, closer than The Empire Strikes Back was to Star Wars, closer than Batman Returns was to Batman, closer than The Lost World was to Jurassic Park, and closer than The Last Jedi was to The Force Awakens. And none of those movies came anywhere near a wait of thirteen years between instalments. That's just stunning.

For that last chart, first, why did it say Top 20 instead of 10. Second, are the watchtime per episodes available calculations you are doing based on the raw numbers Nielsen reports, or are these Nielsen calculations you are reporting. Unfortunately we'll never really know the answer to that - unless IMAX shares those numbers, we don't usually know what amount of the box office is generated by premium formats. The same could be said for 3D screenings of 2009's Avatar or just about any movie in the top 10. Titanic is the only one that could be said to have had a 'pure' release, without premium formats of any kind, and even that gross is boosted by a 3-D re-release 10 years ago, and another one on the horizon.

Gave it a 5/10. Don't expect another RRR (8/10). No spoilers but the movie tries to do more than the budget can handle. The story isn't great and a lot of the stuff happening in it are completely illogical. It's more of the Fast and Furious type nonsense. The pervious instalment in the YRF Spy Universe, WAR (2019) is a much better movie. While still being silly and over the top, the action sequences in that are better executed and more fun.

I'll be making a video on that later this week.

Curious where the 11 episodes for Alice in Borderland came from, bc I'm pretty sure it has 16 episodes in full with 8 per season? That said, if the correct calculation would've lowered the Hrs WPE, I'm glad the error was made bc I love the show and am happy to see it on the chart. 😂

Dan, what's your estimate on how much the Way of Water profited? It grossed over $2 Billion but it probably cost $700 million to make.

I'd be very interested to see a chart showing the week to week tickets but for world wide not just domestic. See that compared to the 2021/2022 and 2015-2019 but I know those numbers can be harder to corroborate. Just interesting to see how the world might be having a good box office weekend when the domestic box office is a little more depressed.

Hi Dan. Until I watched this, I believed what I was told in film class: that movie theatres only made money from sales from "food" and "drink." Was it changed, or did my film class have it wrong?
@DanMurrellMovies Жыл бұрын
Your film class had it wrong - the MAIN source of income for theaters is concessions. It's very profitable. But theaters also get a cut of the box office.

I’m very confused. So, Avatar TWOW reaching $2.1 billion means nothing? I’m not very good with math and statistics, and people still believe that the movie needs $2 billion to break even. They continue to spread this rumor (borderline lie) in there videos covering this, so I just ask if the movie is making a decent profit? It’s impressive it’s making as much as it is and January is just now ending. And I thought Disney distributes Avatar. I thought the money goes to Cameron and his team, not Disney. 😵💫
