Ginzan Onsen Hot Spring Village in winter - with the snow falling - may be the most magical sight in Japan, especially at night. It has become one of Japan's most popular hot springs and the Ryokan, Traditional Japanese Inns lining the Ginzan River are all top notch accommodations with Kaiseki dinner course and breakfast. WIth the snow falling, we'll first stay at Kozankaku's riverside room, visit the nearby Shirogane-yu public bath. We'll end with 2 nights at Notoya Ryokan, welcoming guests since it opened in 1925. It looks like a scene from a Ghibli-film after dark.
HISTORY of Ginzan Onsen ♨️
Ginzan was originally a silver mine in the 16th century until the silver was mined out. It changed to a hot spring town in the 17th century, hidden in the mountains, a long one-day walk from Obanazawa. In 1913, a flood destroyed the town but with local investment, they quickly rebuilt into the village we know today. It has maintained it's Taisho era feel with gas lamps and old wooden architecture, foot bridges crossing all along the Ginzan River.

So wait, you took Kanae & Leo in 2022 and forgot me? Honestly, this is a huge oversight! I haven't been there since 2020 when I live streamed walking through the town.

Oh right, I remember that episode in 2020 with Kanae! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXi6gJuflqp-l5I Yeah, sorry about that, snuck away this year - no live streaming at Ginzan. Hey, I like your 8K releases. Perhaps you have some footage you can show walking the town at night or something?

Always a treat to see lovely Kanae and sweet Leo. I thought this place looked magical but then you showed it at night that just made it even more so. I love that it hasn't changed the old world look. That makes it so much more interesting. Would love to go there someday. Thanks for the tour of this wonderful place.😊

A dazzling winter wonderland captured perfectly by you, John!!! 🤩 It's not just a walking around the town video but one with depth - the appreciation of Ginzan Onsen History & Japan's Ryokan Culture! I loved my visit in Summer but the onsen town truly looks magical with snow. Defintely need another trip there. Enjoyed eating tofu by the river, curry bread at the end of the town & soba ice cream 🤤 And the highlight for me was a smiley Little Leo having his first covered toes Ashiyu 🤣

Great video John. Having been to a few hotels with hot water baths in Japan (not onsens, sadly), I think there's a trick in how to get into a very hot water bath/onsen that is over 40 degrees C: First take a small bucket, or just the palm of your hands, and sprinkle some hot water over your body, this creates an insulating layer of lukewarm water over your body, this layer would allow you to dip in more smoothly without feeling like you're being scalded, as the layer acts as a sort of transition. Instead of just jumping in dry in your cold body. Second, and I'm not sure how scientific this is, but I read somewhere that as heat escapes more easily from the palms of your hand than from any part of the body, so if you place your palms just above the water while dipping, you wouldn't feel too hot while inside.
