This! Me too! They need to teach the loved ones of first responders this because I was rarely if ever affected by the heavy stuff & I found the dark humor in everything. But my spouse, he didn't get it at all, he couldn't see that when I struggled at home, it was the result of all the trauma we deal with. So he thought it was me & he left. Dr. John explained it better than anyone did in the almost decade I worked the job...

Is it possible that the caller’s husband has already been processing the event in his mind? After all, he kept a level head and safely evacuated several other gym patrons, saving their lives? That’s a hero. Then, he made the decision to go back inside to try to help/save the victim? He was unable to do it, and maybe he’s going through the ‘woulda, shoulda, coulda’ loop in his mind about how he failed to save another life. The caller hasn’t dealt with her own issues, and now she’s taken ownership of something that isn’t hers to take on. She’s the one who desperately needs mental health therapy. I hope she takes Dr. Delony’s advise.

When I got hired at the Police Department, one night my girlfriend (now wife of 20+) years, heard me on a police scanner responding to a physical domestic. She heard me call out on scene and didn't hear me again for a couple hours. I walked in the door after work, and she jumped into my clueless arms almost crying. I asked what was wrong and she said she heard me respond but didn't hear anything for a long time after and got worries. I immediately threw that scanner in the trash. No way was I going to have us both going through this every shift. Downside of that is I can't really talk to her about it in fear that I'll traumatize her. So, ya do what you have to do. March on.

People need to give this woman a break. Traumatic events like this often effect loved ones more than the person who experienced it first hand. Had their roles been reversed, I bet her husband would've been torn up at the thought of his wife in danger like that. I've witnessed a shooting/killing and some pretty gruesome traumas, but never did I experience anything I'd categorize as PTSD until something happened to my wife (she's fine). Even today she jokes about the event, but it's hard for me to even think about. It'll just play over and over in my head.

In life we have to understand that we will go to tragedies. It was very hard for me to endure what happened to my daughter and that my brother was trying to kill my husband and my daughter‘s father my husband was sleeping in the bed. My brother evidently was on drugs and Jesus that knife upstairs and it ricocheted into my daughter’s chest. at that point my mother asked before a few thousand dollars for her son to not go to jail. But I loved her that much. That I lent that money to my mother it came from my husband and myself. I have never gotten over the fact. And he never became a great uncle

It seems her issue is something not related to the shooting . The husband seems fine , she hasn’t witness the murder and to be quite honest she sounds a little emotionally unstable and exhausted . I would advise her to seek counselling and to not put words and thoughts in her husbands mouth and mind. He has already told you he is handling it well. You clearly aren’t for whatever reason. Do you feel bad he doesn’t need any support in this from your side? Does he not emote in other situations too which is driving you crazy? The problem seems to be with the lady. Just because you get emotional about things doesn’t means he does too. People are different
