@@MsMak03, Maybe, but if we treat viewing child pornography and committing sexual violence against a child equivalently then there would be no reason for a criminal to distinguish it either and go for the worse of the two. After all, they end up getting the same or worse of a punishment for viewing/owning CP, why not just act on their urges all-together? They may even get less prison time.

My brother was convicted of child molestation. There was more than one victim, one of them a young relative. My mother absolutely refused to believe he was guilty. It tore the extended family apart. My mother insisted everyone in the family believe in his innocence, including my uncle whose daughter was one of the victims. The family relationships were destroyed.

Obviously this requires some nuance. Mental disabilities, including autism, can affect one’s judgement and rationale. Mental disabilities also allow others to take advantage of their reduced cognition in this area. Someone sent him these images. He didn’t request them. Why are you overly willing to acknowledge the lack of understanding of disabilities and how people with disabilities are regularly misunderstood and convicted for crimes they didn’t play a part in or didn’t understand their role in. @A 7108 I get what you are getting at, but this demented woman who makes excuses for her deviant, evil son should Not be around the children her son watched being abused. The children need professional help from trained professionals who won't gaslight them into thinking that the grown man who willingly watched them being sexually abused is a martyr. The mom can read or listen to testimonials from other survivors. She needs therapy, because I am willing to bet that she coddled her son and overlooked warning signs of his behavior long before he was sentenced.

@@rebecaa7482 I personally agree with you, but I’ve heard the argument used before (I listen to a lot of content like this with serious subject matter from anonymous callers) is it the hosts place to condemn the caller because at that moment their job is to platform an anonymous struggling person so others can listen in and take whatever they want from it. I’d assume the hope is to gain more insight of strangers struggles and possible take a look at our own lives. If the host condemns her/a caller then they will not be doing their “journalistic” job of giving these people a platform where they feel comfortable enough to share honestly. I’m not saying I agree, but I definitely understand the hosts position of being more neutral and allowing the audience to speak their minds in the comments or furthering a discussion in their personal lives with others

It's her son, her baby (we are always our mother's babies). We aren't talking about some petty offense here, we are talking about her child being a monster. Imagine having to process and accept that. The innocent and joyful memories she has of her son running around as a toddler, they are gone, burned to ash, replaced with the closest thing we know to real evil, someone who preys on children. So its difficult to listen to her be in denial, but its also completely normal and an expected response for a mother who is still struggling to process this.

And it frightens me that she genuinely believes that he should be "held accountable" and monitored by someone instead of jail. That she really does not understand that he poses a threat to children around him or online. All because she fails to see that he is a grown capable college-attending adult man who committed a crime, not an incapable little boy who accidentally did something "bad". A lot of parents make the grave mistake of underestimating their child with a diagnosis, and coddles them throughout their whole childhood, never holding them accountable because they think that diagnosis means their child is a forever innocent who can't learn. Which couldn't be further from the truth. Autism doesn't mean dumb, it just means your brain works a little differently.

He cannot count on living with mom & pop after prison release if they live within a certain radius of a school, park, recreation center, etc.

Any type of crime involving children is the most horrible and deserves the harshest punishment. Poor parents. But the sooner they accept the magnitude of their son's crime and let him face the consequences of his actions-because an 18-year-old is not a baby, he knew what he was doing, no matter how terrible these consequences are-the sooner they will be able to move on with their lives, which will obviously never be the same.

This is the final stop for pornography type addictions. It doesn’t start this way, but a person has to keep escalating their behavior to get the same dopamine high until they run out of any other images. In some countries pornography is illegal and harder to obtain, I would totally vote to get rid of porn all together, what it does to the brain is insane.

Yes and no... Porn addiction is a real phenomenon that some people experience. But I can't see a non-pedophile being attracted to CP anymore than a straight person to gay pornography for instance. Viewing pornography, or even addiction to it, has a lot of effects on the brain, but isn't capable of changing one's sexual orientation (which is more or less already determined before puberty and not changeable).

i have experience with this! My ex-boyfriend, 6 months after we broke up, was arrested for gross sexual imposition of a minor and 60 counts of child pornography. yes, the victims are the children. But geez it's a TERRIBLE feeling to watch someone do this to their life. You had this idea of this person. You thought you knew someone. And it was all a lie. I went through weeks of emotions. ON top of that, as a favor to his family, I was dealing with his estate for months. Parents definitely go through denial and just plain shock. They ask themselves, what did I do wrong? The right thing to do always is be an advocate for the children.

My ex had everyone including me fooled until I noticed some predatory and grooming behaviors around minors. I was cast out by family and friends for pointing this out because he would never. I left and rebuilt my life after utter slander and destruction. He died 2 years later and I found out he had a warrant out for his arrest molesting his friends 7 year old. I had warned him also. Sucks that people don't listen and try to kill the messenger. In the end you're only responsible for how you react and what you do...I sleep well knowing I didn't cover it up or entertain it. Light is supposed to uncover the darkness not succumb to it and crimes against children are the most heinous because it hits the innocent and the perpetrators are cowards because they cannot contend with their equals. They are bullies. My ex mother covered for him as well...going to church and praying. Well God took him out of this world so he won't be destroying anyone else's life. The victims and people involved still have to deal with the aftermath of what happened. It's been 5 years and I'm still trying to cope, but I seriously do not want to date or engage with anyone else because it's just so prevalent in society and I won't be as lenient or patient with anyone anymore. The only help some of these people deserve, is to help themselves leave this earth.

My mom has made every excuse for my brother when he was almost convicted. But his were drug related crimes. I wish he was convicted because he was guilty but he got off. Moms need to realize that by making excuses for your kids your only making things worse not only for your child but society as a whole. My brother threatened suicide too and guess what, he didn’t do it, it was all a game to toy with my mom to bail him out. I told her absolutely do not bail him out, he’s a scam artist and most criminals all. My brother is still completely messed up and I wish he was caught at 18, maybe then he could have turned his life around. This is a GOOD THING, that’s my opinion. And believe me my families denials has torn our family apart. Very sad and it takes a toll on the entire family. But where do we differentiate the two? Clearly, he wasn't involved in making the material or engaging in any sexual acts against a child, so when do we say the punishment fits the crime? If we want less criminal sex-offenders out there preying on children then we don't need to be sending 18 year old Autistic young men that got involved in sexual deviancy as their first offense to prison for 5+ years. It is insane, we all know prison isn't a place of rehabilitation and will only serve to make him worse if anything. Why do we think that will fix the problem? It won't, it only serves to give everyone else their minute of dopamine rush knowing that they screwed a boy's life up and punishing him for our own vindictive pleasure. Even though her son is most likely going to come out of that prison more of a sexual criminal than when he went in, increasing the likelihood of further victimization in society. He needs therapy and long-term probation. He needs to be supervised and helped.

The thing about kitty porn is that the rules are not necessarily cut and dried. An 18-year-old high school senior could be charged because he has photos of his 16- or 17-year-old girlfriend on his cell phone. I know of a 20 yo whose 16-17 yo girlfriend sent him two pics. Naturally her dad was upset and pushed prosecution (as would I) but he got ten years per photo. Seems excessive when she sent the photos. He got out after five years but the girl kept following him and, even though he complained about her, they sent him back. There are men who have completed their sentences but can’t leave prison because the government doesn’t approve their living situation. That doesn’t seem very American to me. When you’ve completed your sentence, you should be free. This should not be legal. If you want criminals to stay in prison, give them longer sentences. It’s not all the same. The crimes are not all the same.
