Hey all. I totally forgot to talk about audio books. I don't use them a ton, but I have in the past (I find them especially useful when traveling/walking). If you want to sign up for a free trial of Audible and get *two* free audio books, I'd appreciate if you use this link since I get a little kickback: amzn.to/2r4PgEN

I haven’t done a book a week, but for the last two years, I’ve been reading almost every day. (Mainly because I’m reading longer books like Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, etc.) And this guy isn’t lying. It’s a slow progression, but after 6 months or so, I realized I had a completely different state of mind; more patience, more empathy, and even more self-awareness. Hell, my sleep schedule has improved significantly. The two best things about being a daily reader have been 1) my willingness to learn! I’m constantly trying to learn about new things; politics, psychology, the court system, economics, history; I’m desperate for knowledge now! And 2) my ability to have a conversation. I used to be a really awkward person. I sucked at holding a conversation or simply saying what’s on my mind. My relationships with my friends and family have improved because I’m much better at articulating my thoughts, as well as processing information and therefore understanding other people’s thoughts and words better. On top of all this, I’ve improved my imagination , my work ethic, my willingness to stick to eating healthy, exercising more, and even putting down the cigarettes I smoked like a chimney. (I’m still working on that last one though) It sounds like im trying to recruit you into a cult, right? But I’m literally just telling you to read books. It’s not necessarily about the information you’re reading, it’s the exercise you’re giving your brain.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad the end result was one with productivity attached onto it. Books indeed do have a distinct effect other mediums don't have. The absorption of the text is passive, yet the interpretation of the information is left completely to us the reader. That can have large effects which makes reading worthwhile.

@Karan K I'm a huge bookworm. I love reading and I love books. I love reading for the just act of reading itself, but I also love reading for the joy, fun and entertainment. I love words, I love languages, I love looking at the words on a paper and I love reading words and sentences but I am also very interested in the plot and the events in a book. The best part is that I can connect those two and enjoy both equally. When I am reading slowly, I want to savour every part of the book and I read a word after word so I can pay attention to every word and it's meaning. But when I am very entertained and when something very interesting happens in a book , I want to know what will happen next so I read fast and I read 3-6 words at a time. Sometimes I don't even read words, I just look at them and I know what I've read lol.

Actually since the beginning of school some people never read a book after graduation or after they dropped out. Actually in school right now many students are not reading the assigned books, they use spark notes instead. (What a shame.) Tristan Fletcher John Fish will probably explain this way better than I will (check out his videos). I basically wake up in the morning and set myself concrete and achievable goals for the day which I write in a diary. As for the studying, I create a favorable atmosphere for learning (tea, clean desk, organized textbooks etc). Then, I use the Pomodoro technique which consists in working for 25 minutes and taking a break for 5 min. All these things may seem very trivial but they really do boost concentration and productivity during a work session.

I think the most profound idea within your expression of your experience is that reading is equated with a reward, and similarly an obligation. Reading has been the most influential endeavor in my entire life, and I haven't really engaged with it in like 7 years. Your analysis and sharing of the struggles you went through have caused me to seriously reconsider what I think about reading books, and whether or not I actually am. Similarly, I question whether what I'm spending my time on from a day to day basis is really as worthy of investment as reading as much as I can. Thank you so much for this video. Thank you so much for your perspective, and sharing just that. Congratulations on 63k!!! Keep it up my man! Namaste

I’ve always considered the reward for reading is increased knowledge. This is the main reason I read non-fiction when I do read, it gives you a different viewpoint from your own and enriches and expands upon your understanding of certain concepts and ideas. Reading is really like exercise for your mind, some of my favourite books I have read multiple times to reinforce and refresh on the authors points.

I personally LOVE reading, and the other day I was asking myself why I haven't been reading as much as I used to. And my answer was...school. Just like you said. But not only because it makes reading feel like a chore, but because it takes up so much time and makes you read so much already that I don't have any time or energy left for reading on my own. But now it's summer, and I'm taking this opportunity to read more. Today I went to the library and picked up a novel that looked really interesting...and was in Spanish. I'm a huge language geek. I speak Mandarin Chinese almost fluently at 16 years old, and started learning it when I was 10. I started learning Spanish in October 2017, and am now able to read, listen, write, and speak pretty confidently. So your video was so inspiring, not only to get me reading again, but to be reading WHILE doing something else I love...exploring another language.

I saw this video in 2021 and it was one of the key things that pushed me into reading more. I wasn't much of a reader growing up; my attention span wasn't great. For the books I did read, I felt like I didn't absorb them - I'd skim frequently, especially at the end. I would have a hard time finishing books and an even harder time remembering what I had read. Since watching this video, I've read more than 100 books (I've lost track of the exact count). I've gained a better appreciation for reading (and gotten better at digesting what I read), and I am pretty sure it's why I improved my score on the Critical Analysis/Reading section of an exam. It's also one of my favorite things to do now, and I've made some good friends by bonding over books. It's just crazy to see this video again after several years and think of how much of an impact it has made on me :)

You made a really good point about how reading feels like a chore rather than something you'd enjoy without a reward. I like how you connected that to the way the school system is set up. That was quite relatable and made me think differently about reading. Thank you!

I was kind of hoping there would be more fiction. Self help books bore the heck out of me nowadays since it's a lot of regurgitated stuff just written in different ways supported by anecdotes. I find fiction so much more engaging. It's like taking a bit of a break and going into another world.

I stopped reading after 10th grade. Then, I got back into it junior year of college. It's so true, school essays and required reading sucks the entertainment out of reading. But, when you choose the books you want and sit down, you'll be able to form the habit again. The first book I read to get back in the habit was Becoming, by Michelle Obama. It took me 2 months to finish b/c I hadn't read 4 fun in a while. After that I finished books in 2-3 days. Trust me, get past the first book and you'll feel the joy again.

Galaxy Find some time each day, set a goal of a certain amount of pages. Then try and increase the amount of pages each day. If you want to read more then split reading throughout the day. :)

Recently I've felt the excitement of reading in a long time. I'm from South Korea, where all the students read books to 'achieve" something , not to learn other people's thoughts. They really consider reading as a chore like you said and I was one of them. I just made up an excuse that I don't have time to read. A few weeks ago I read an impactful book and I made the resolution to read books using my spare time. I'm 18 and people around me might say that I should study in that time but anyway your video just made me have confidence in my beliefs. Let's read 📚

Stumbled across your channel John and I’m enjoying it. I am what would be considered an ‘old guy’ to most of your subs but I like your insights from the point of view of a younger guy. I have people your age working for me and I will be recommending that they watch your back catalogue. I particularly like your time management plans, your acknowledgment that you were wasting hours a day on social media and your thoughts on reading for benefit rather than reward. All of these points are so relevant in this day and age. 👍🏼 great work John.
