I highly recommend another work of Primo Levi: If This Is a Man (published as Survival in Auschwitz in the US). The way he tells his story makes it very real. It’s a great book to educate yourself and others not on a facts level, but on a human and emotion level.

Greatly appreciate this video, John. You've sold me on _The Periodic Table_ which I'll do my best to find on CD at my local library. I'm normally just a SF/F geek, but in the almost 2 years I've been subscribed, here, I've delved into more general & non-fiction than I had in the last 30 years (I'm 57 now). I have a vision issue, as well as an arm issue from a stroke 5+ years ago, so audio books are easiest now. I mean this in the best way possible: You're my "man crush" - your positivity, passion and intelligence and what I always look for in my buds. In my youth, my late best friend (from "82 to '85) was a guy named Josh and you remind me of him, greatly. Thank you again!❤

If you're interested in pursuing Orwell further, some of his social novels are just as good as 1984 in my opinion. I would recommend 'Burmese Days' especially. It deals with the nature of British colonial rule in a really interesting way. It's made clear that Orwell is hugely opposed to the Raj, but it's always slightly in the background rather than taking the full focus of the novel, and the protagonist is always more concerned with other things. If you're looking for more of an essay style, 'Road to Wigan peer' is a pure social polemic, with a really fun style. I also greatly enjoyed 'an Homage to Catalonia', although I was already very interested in the Spanish civil war. Orwell writes in an open first person about his conversion to socialism from a very sceptical beginning. Howeverthere are long periods that are a pure historical account. Perhaps my favourite of Orwell's writings stylistically if not for everyone. If you enjoyed reading his essays recreationally, it's well worth looking into some of his longer works.

Orwell's essays are amazing! I've got a complete collection and I'm really glad I can rest assured there's not a single essay of his I haven't read. I recommend everyone get a collection. I do think really understanding Orwell's politics I think requires reading homage to Catalonia, which is quite an interesting book about a somewhat overlooked and ill-understood conflict. Jesus is coming soon, stop willfully and purposely sinning, repent. Accept Jesus into your heart and life. Come to Him as you are. Ask for His help and He will lead in the right way to go. He will change you, heal you, and deliver you. He will help you to love and live for Him. Read God’s word to know Him. Obey God’s commandments, turn away from evil, and flee toward the Lord. Seek Him first. “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out,” -Acts 3:19 “f my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

I have been reading mainly Japanese literature, more specifically I have diving into Haruki Murakami's world, and it has been sensational, though at times certain scenes he includes are somewhat disturbing, but even so the way he writes is just absolutely stunning. I am on a mission to read every piece of work that man has published/will publish in the future. Other work I have read between May-to this day are 'Down And Out In Paris And London' by Orwell, 'The Vanishing Half' by Brit Bennett, 'How Not To Be Wrong The Art Of Changing Your Mind' by one of my favourite radio show hosts (James O'Brien), 'Never Let Me Go' by Ishiguro which I was massively disappointed with. If it was up to me I would dedicate in my local Waterstone's a whole floor solely to Japanese literature. Magical realism is lovely.
