Should tell people to make sure its empty first?? And that turning the valve won't empty it without having fitting pushed in there first. Would be good to go over a few more safety precautions.

Traveling in the RV I learn that The Lowe's Blue rhino tanks actually have a proprietary valve on the newer ones that takes a key with a magnet to fill them so you have to take them back and exchange them and only get 15 lb when you exchange them. This is definitely a great video to take one of the brand new Blue rhino tanks and take their proprietary valve off of it and place a brand new valve on it and just keep going back to tractor supply and getting it refilled for $16.

John, it is extremely important to ensure the tank has zero pressure before removing the valve. There should be a dip tube bleed screw near the bottom of the valve (your video kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5e0eKhooLB7hqem) that should be opened first. If the bleed passage is blocked, a pigtail screwed onto the opened tank valve with nothing attached to the open end of the hose will work too. Commenters suggesting exchanging the cylinder should consider that you only get 12-16 lbs of propane in an exchanged 20 lb cylinder. If you have one filled until the OPD stops at 80%, you will get 20 lbs + - propane, depending on the internal float position. Some sites charge by the gallon or pound (Tractor supply, U-haul, propane retailers) so you will pay less per pound of propane.
@MrLonewolf5012 жыл бұрын
I was going to point out the set screw used to release any pressure, too... One other note: Common rubber gloves will not protect your hands from the effect of propane... We wore heavy rubber chemical gloves to protect our hands, when I ran a truck...

@Vikingwerk Жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but yes, the valves are different. The OPD components are longer on the larger tanks. 4” long for 20# tanks, 4.7” for 30# tanks, and 6.4” for 40# tanks. Be sure and get the right length for your tank.

Do you know how certified professionals remove and install these valves? If they have a special tool for this. Searching for the "how to" professionals comes up buttkiss. I've always done it the way that you've done. One trick I've found is to remove the valve handle first. This gives a little more room to work the crescent and eliminates the possibility of bending the handle attachment screw. Nice video, thorough, and straight forward - thanks for sharing.

Quit a few tanks have welding spatter inside, at the bottom of the thank. Them chinese workers don't care flipping the tank upside down after welding the center ring, so as to remove the metal debris before placing the valve. You get metal debris inside, which can clog both the OPD and the relief valve if the tank is being put on the side - a tank has many owners through time, not everyone handles them correctly. When you buy or exchange a new tank, put it on the floor then flip it at 45 degrees and listen inside for something like sand sliding inside - these are the metal debris from the welding. Skip that tank, pick another one. Also, these debris may make the tank appear slightly heavier, depends how much is it there. In some countries with less control, shady operators put sand at the bottom of the tank and sell them by weight.

Hello John! That is interesting. Do you have any kind of rules about the age of the tank? Here, after 10 years, it's being put out of service (they won't refill) and be recertified with a new valve. I am curious to see part 2 on how to fill another tank! Thanks!
@JohnFrancoNH4 жыл бұрын
Hello Joe! Nice to hear from you again. Looking forward to your projects on the new property. I got this same tank in the video filled the other day with no questions asked. If the tank looks in good condition and has an OPD valve, they just fill it up and hand it back. Part 2 will be uploaded next!
@mtcman424 жыл бұрын
It is my understanding that the tank is considered "out of date" after 12 years, based on the mfg. date stamped on the collar. Usually a month and year. Our recertification stamps are good for 5 years, but based on the volume of tanks going through our local refill station, they don't take the time to check the date stamp very often if the tank looks reasonably good. I haven't had a problem for several years, but I skip the small refill places in favor of the local high volume place.

John Franco what if the valve was stripped and you need to release the propane still in the tank? No bleed off valve on those types of tanks
@mainelyelectric3 жыл бұрын
@@scottmiles3362 on the side of the the valve down by the tank threads is a bleeder screw on all valves! It is used to help fill and purge the tank when new or new valve was installed to release air so that there is just propane in the tank.

My understanding is that you don't need the new style OPD valve on the large, 100 lb tanks. Only on the 20,30, and 40 lb. I think those sizes take the same OPD valve, but I'm not sure. The old style valves can be bled off but, but you have to use something to actuate the new style valves plunger inside.

Hello I am livinig en Poland it is posible to send, 3 valve OPD for LPG. you give many (valve 20 lb)
@te41452 жыл бұрын
Stop!!! I wish they'd start screening these like they do FB and Twitter. NEVER use a liquid sealant on LP tanks. Buy Natural Gas rated teflon tape or teflon tape rated for oxygen if your worried about leaks. John is indoor wearing latex/nitrile gloves and then mentions being careful in case there is residual LP in the tank??? If you don't know how to bleed a LP tank than don't work on it. No reason to use an adjustable wrench if you have a rack of open ended wrenches. Eye roll. You don't have one big enough John? Lastly don't buy something critical like an OPD valve on Amazon or eBay. Both places are having serious issues with vendors selling Chinese counterfeit garbage. Sometimes even the vendor does not know it. Buy this device from a reputable retailer or see if your local welding supply shop has them or can get them. Also folks, LP tanks like what John bought have expiration dates on them. If they are expired you can get them recertified and the costs depends on the state you live in and whether they follow the minimum Federal standards or they have additional standards like mandatory internal hydro-static testing. A licensed LP filling station is NOT going to fill an expired tank.
@samborez80892 жыл бұрын
"NEVER use a liquid sealant on LP tanks" Rectorseal Tru Blue is a paste and the preferred sealant for tank valves. Teflon tape will not allow the valve to be fully seated. The valves have tapered pipe thread and are not suitable to have tape between the mating surfaces. Hint: did you see any teflon tape on the removed valve?
