" people don't know why you added water to tank" That's just one isolated factoid. I'm never surprised how much lack of in depth knowledge most people exhibit on matters they feel feel particularly competent in. Look up the "Dunning Kruger Effect" and read about why that is the case, it very interesting. The lack of basic overall knowledge for a high percentage of people is epidemic today, imo. I'm 69 and it never stops coming up, the lack of real in depth understanding content providers show when making a how to video which they feel adequate in. The hardest part is being effectively diplomatic enough to not be painted as a hater and troll when pointing out short comings in a video or presenter's methods/Knowledge. Ignoring it and not commenting is the safest. Cheers.

Lots of comments here about why add water but know one has provided an answer. Also, my feet hurt every other day or so and someone else said it would be helpful to mark the shoes L and R but how am I supposed to know which letter goes on which one and how would that help anyway? I painted a floor the other day but left tracks on it when I was finished and my wife laughed at me. I still don’t think it was funny, I had to get out somehow.

Don't know if some of these comments or a joke or not the reason why you would add water to any vessel before cutting or welding is to purge any residual vapors or even liquids from the interior many people have been seriously injured or killed for failing to do a simple step. People assume that because the vessel is empty that the danger is gone but in fact they are still very dangerous.I fill vessels until they are overflowing and l continue to overflow for several seconds just to make sure no Boom

Just got an old tank to use for a project but it still has some gas in it. There is no valve, just duct tape over the hole. Can I still use a hose to fill it with water? I read that the gas will sink into low spots and remain flammable.
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia Жыл бұрын
If there is just duct tape over the valve, then any gas in that tank will be minimal. Yes, just fill it with water (overflowing) and let it sit outside for a day. It will stink something fierce, but will be fine to work with after that. The odor will eventually go away, but it can be rough when you first start working with the tank. Be safe.

@@HNXMedia Thank you muchly... I'll choose to trust your judgement. Fare well friend... Safety First P.S. I just realized that I may not have been clear as to the issue I'm seeing with the valve leak ... The leak is not where the valve threads into the tank but is at the point where the valve stem passes thru the brass but (the one with reverse thread indications notched into it). I do recall being at a North Idaho Propane and saw the sales clerk offer certain "O-rings" to a customer for the valves though I believe they were small ones that seal the bleeder screw and so do assume that some repairs are/were considered OK to do... Have you ever worked with a tank that's rusted closed? I searched youtube and found this video. The triangle-shaped handle won't move either direction. I cannot tell if it is currently opened or closed. Using a pin I purged the gas I could out of it, but I'm sure there's still vapor. This makes me uneasy about opening it up. Is it safe to drill into it underwater, would that prevent explosions? I was also thinking a file and some lube, nobody has ever made a spark using a file.
@cocospops9351
@cocospops9351 3 жыл бұрын
@@capnlatenight5356 You can just drill into it normally, if there is no pressure inside of it. Nothing will happen. 1: Drilling doesn't produce sparks, if it does you'll destroy your bit before making it through the tank 😉 2: even if it did spark, it won't explode because there is no air in the tank, it would simply produce a small flame where the hole is. I cut these all the time as I make wood stoves from them. Heres my method, drill 6 or 8 mm hole in depressurised tank, put tank in a fire (I use a steel oil barrel, wood and a powerful blower from a bouncy castle) this burns off the paint and frees up the valve. After heat treating the valve comes out easily, usually just twist out by hand. At this point it is dangerous because there'll likely still be vapour inside (which still surprises me as the tank would be glowing red during heat treat) and taking the valve out will introduce air. You can leave it to air out for a day or so and it'll be good to go. I actually do a "controlled explosion" by firing my plasma cutter into the hole I drilled and the vapour ignites and shoots out the valve hole with big whooosh, sometimes still gives me a fright even though I've done it hundreds of times 😂😂 But you can skip that last step if you're not feeling brave/don't have a plasma. 👍 Let me know if I can help any more, don't want to see you getting hurt.

@@capnlatenight5356It's important to make sure there's no pressure inside it before drilling. If there is, it's possible that gas will spray out and ignite from the brushes in your drill motor, flame throwering you in the face (this has never happened me but I'm conscious that it could) As you say though, jam something into the valve pin and release any pressure first.

More often than not, you'll find that valve rusted in place. SO, What you do is add some heat with a torch & that'll loosen those rusted threads. !

I thought you were going to put this tank back in service, without having it recertification. 12 years from orginal date stamped on tank. Good idea for new valve then also then AFTER RECERT. EVERY 5 years after that. biggest problem with this bbq tanks is people over fill them. 80% full is the law. The newer ones have a built in device to shut off at 80% but I wouldn’t trust them, fill by WEIGHT! Only to be safe.

The cost of recert in my area is almost as expensive as buying a new tank. Recert = 5 yr life; New tank = 12 yr life.

I don’t know if I would have stopped and grabbed a roadside abandoned propane tank. I’ve been told that meth manufacturers use them to transport anhydrous ammonia. That corrodes the seals in the valves, and then they just ditch the tanks. If you find an abandoned propane tank, especially if the valve is green, call the cops. You might help catch a meth manufacturer.

It is actually about halfway done. My welder died on me and I do not use a welder enough to justify buying a new one. The "partially built" wood stove is sitting in my garage. As soon as I can figure out how to finish it without welding, I will post the video. I did a lot of filming before the welder died, so I have the original footage to complete the vid.

Well I suppose your Idea was alright using a two Straps: But My Method is to take a Crowbar or a solid Piece of Bar : Place the Bar into a Vice {side on} Take hold of the Empty Gas Bottle and slide the Crowbar through the two Holes; and then with a 22mm Open end spanner or an adjustable Spanner or pipe wrench. If You Find it hard o Unscrew Place a Pipe within the Pipe wrench for extra Pull
