This was excellent and you do it correctly. Do the chill method then you don’t have to mess at all with the OP valve. Messing with that OP valve just brings all sorts of other issues that you can eliminate completely and still get a 70 to 80% with the chill method on one or two attempts. I love that scale you have very nice. Thanks for posting

There is a pressure relief valve on the 20 pound tank that you use with a flat screwdriver to do the same thing you did with the little bottle let the air out and the gas in You just do the same thing flip the one bottle over and put the other 1 on the floor and open the pressure relief valve with a screwdriver when the white liquid propane comes out it is full tighten it down and shut it off.

When you fill the 20 lb tank leave the top bottle upside down like filling the small green one pounder the bottom 20 pound tank has a screw in its valve that you open until the propane starts coming out or leeching turn the screw in the tank valve off and you will have the other top tank drained ! Real easy process !

@joesinakandid528
@joesinakandid528 17 күн бұрын
So, the """safety valve""" you mentioned on the neck of the 20 pounder is NOT a safety valve. It is opened slightly during filling of the tank and when the tank reaches 90% full (about) of liquid propane, the tank will start to spray a very small amount of liquid propane from that small valve. Then you immediately STOP filling the 20 pounder any more and close that valve with your handy screwdriver (or sometimes pliers). The valve is called a "10 % valve" so that the filling can be stopped at 90% of total capacity. The last 10% is expansion room. "Leeching" is an inaccurate term for the process. Think back --- when you get a propane tank filled it is NEVER done indoors. Filling any propane tank indoors is just waiting for a disaster to happen and it will sooner or later. Working with Propane is not a dangerous thing if you're just smarter than the propane.

I do something similar to dump 40 pound cylinders into my 200 pound tank. Cool the receiving tank and crack the bleeder, invert the donor tank and warm it. Important where home delivery is 2x cost at gas station...

Thank you for your comment! My RV is set up in a great fixed location but I can't get delivery. My plan is to stop using the two 40lb tanks connected to my RV system and use those tanks to fill my tank that's installed on the motorhome frame. I now have the proper method in mind. Your comment confirmed that his 20 to 20 tank transfer method wasn't correct.

@shopcanadian8225
@shopcanadian8225 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but you have no idea what you are doing. Warm the tank you want to drain then invert it so you are draining out liquid propane not gas.If the pressures equalizes open the purge valve on the tank being filled and the tank your draining will push more propane through till its empty. This should only take about five min. Its just physics.

Exactly. You should barely be releasing gas to atmosphere. Keep the liquid warm and the receiver tank cool. If you are transferring from a large tank chill the small receiver tank... You want to transfer liquid. Opening the vent is a cheat. The goal is to barely release gas if done properly (including the hose). You paid for that gas, don't blow it all out into the air. That's like pouring gas without a funnel and trying to get max fill.

Heating a propane tank with liquid propane in it is a short cut to disaster. Cooling a completely empty and unpressurized one pound tank prior to filling creates a slight vacuum in the empty tank and helps to get a little extra liquid into the tank before the high pressure between both tanks equals.

Now doing the 20 pound to the 20 pound it's good to have one of those tanks painted black on the top half to absorb heat and the other 1 run a the other 1 run a hose of cool water over it as it's going will help it increase the Efficiency and get it done much quicker

20# and similar (30, 40,...100 etc)have their tare weight stamped on them on the collar near the valve. You will also find the hydrostatic test date stamped there as well. If I remember correctly a tank is good for 10 years from original hydro test, then 5 years after each recertification and it can be recertified a maximum of 2 times for a total tank lifetime of 20 years.

Yes the ice bath would help speed up the transfer, i just didnt have another bin laying around at the time of the video. Be sure the 1# cylinder is clean and free of rust, dirt, etc. Do NOT use Vaseline or any other lube to seal the connection as we do in plumbing projects oftentimes as if the cylinder gets warm enough to soften the lube then it can plug the orfice and lines to, as in my case, a Coleman lantern. Now I need to get it cleaned and have failed to discover the solvent that would work for me. Any suggestions ? Also I need to fill #20 tanks from my 100# tank and cannot invert the larger tank as I'm not strong enough to manage it anymore. Is it possible to fill with the large ones standing up, maybe till it's partly/mostly emptied and I can handle it...?

Need to open bleeder valve on the tank being filled
@Gatewayuser200
@Gatewayuser200 2 жыл бұрын
The easy way to transfer LP between tanks is to heat up the source tank with a propane heater. Heat the source tank until the internal pressure is 250 PSI. Then turn the source tank upside down, connect the empty tank, and open the valves. The higher pressure in the source tank will force the liquefied propane straight into the tank your trying to fill. A 20lb tank at normal outdoor temperatures will be 100-150PSI, with the source tank at 250 the transfer happens quickly. You can buy fittings to put a pressure gauge on the end of a POL fitting, just make sure any fittings you buy are rated for 600PSI or better. The source tank should be constantly monitored during heating. The internal pressure should not exceed the pressure marked on the safety relief valve, it is often 375PSI but can be a lower.

@TwistyTrav
@TwistyTrav 4 ай бұрын
The 1lb propane cylinders are weighed at 850 grams (1.86lb) from the factory, so filling to 2lb is actually overfilled. Not recommended to do this, because the law states propane cylinders must not be filled to more than 80% of their capacity to allow for thermal expansion. Not following this rule could mean the cylinder will burst, because liquid propane (like any liquid) cannot be compressed.

If you finally figured out how to successfully transfer with the one pound tank why would you think the physics would change with the transfer amount? Especially when you don't keep the supply tank upside down to push the liquid out instead of the gas? Just like venting on plumbing, air make up with heating and cooling, ect. No matter if it's a thunb over a straw or opening two windows in your house for cross ventilation. How much heating and cooling do you think they do at the local hardware store 🤔 smh. @@edwardlmills newer 20lb tanks have a opd valve that wont let liquid out when inverted, so most of the time you need to do a vapor transfer as shown, if you have an old tank you can still flip it for liquid.

@@JohnFrancoNH As I have seen there are usually a couple connections on a stationary propane tank. One Gas and the Other liquid. If you use the liquid, bleed the 20 lb you should actually be able to over fill.

No... No.. no... 20 to 20 is not done with the source right side up.... Upside down it will transfer LIQUID... FAR FAR FAR faster. I use a splitter on the receiving 100 lb tank.(splitter placed for that purpose) connect and turn on the source.. and leave it. No need to even heat or cool anything if you don't mind it taking awhile.

the absolute best way To transfer from one 20 gallon tank to another Is by first Wrapping the shipping tank in black with a black trash bag , inexpensive and efficient, Elevate At least twice the height of the tank on the receiving end place the receiving tank in the receiving tank in a container with ice Make sure the receiving tank is open Is before opening the shipping tank, Open the shipping tank slowly until it is completely open Let it flow until it's empty. If the receiving tank still is not full it's not full rinse and repeat shipping tank instructions If you're unsure how to determine the level of your receiving tank you can put hot water on it once it runs off you will see A-line form for just a moment or you can also feel because because the warm water will keep I'll keep the empty portion of the tank warmed to the touch but the propane filled portion will feel cool to the touch go to the touch relative to the other If you have a scale that is obviously more efficient and precise

Although it is not illegal to refill those non DOT 1 lb tanks, it is absolutely illegal to put in your vehicle and transport after you refill them. (B) For cylinders manufactured on or after October 1, 1996: “Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $500,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124).”
