Any camera that has a frame. A frame to use when framing your subject. A cheap cell phone camera is fine. Fine to start with. Maybe find a camera that is best suited to what a photographer desires to photograph. I have to ask myself the question of, how important do I feel it is for me to get the shot exactly when it makes sense to my brain. An instantaneous emotional reaction to an instant in time. No time for slow hands. No time for equipment difficulties. Any camera that will not allow accurate framing and a shutter with a delay, should be avoided. Quick, quick. No time for fun and games with cameras that are not effective for this instantaneous type of photography. Just a half second to late and the masterpiece is lost forever. You missed. Slap your own face. Why did you miss? Did the camera hold you back? Or was it a slow brain. Maybe the brain should be trained, as well as the hands, to arrive at a better understanding of ones intent and an enhanced understanding of the process and eventual product desired and why. Always asking ones self, "WHY". What will the viewer of my photograph feel? Why will the viewer feel that way, in response to my photograph? How can I adjust my framing of the subject to make sure I have given enough information to the viewer, in order for the viewer to interpret my photograph. My sister-in-law, Dee, told me years ago, that the brain is the camera and the camera is a boat anchor hanging from your neck.

Wow, what a coincidence! Your Instagram page was recommended to me by Instagram and I instantly fell in love with your photos and followed you. I just liked your photo with the lady with the cigar and was recommended this video by KZbin and I couldn't believe I haven't heard of John Free before. And I am just seeing your comment. Hope you have a great day and keep that sutter busy, big fan :)

Man, this taught me so much, i"ve been shooting on streets for some time, and I never felt right with my approach. This taught me a lot about ethics and respecting people. Normally I'd "shoot first ask questions later". But I feel less connected to my subject with this approach. Thanks john, I'm glad I found your channel!

Hey Rambles, Yes, todays world is much different with respect to photographing a child. People are very guarded about their children. I see this more in my country than other places I have worked in. A big problem for us. Try to be careful and smile, smile.

i think when it comes to the security cameras, its out of sight out of mind senario. I got screamed at by a woman when i took a photo of her barber shop. She called the cops on me, claiming i was being a stalker. the cops came, look at what i had taken and told her since i was on the public sidewalk, i did not trespass and broke no law. To make her happy, i deleted the photo, swithced sd cards and used recovery sw to get it back later.

Hi John, thank you so much for your video. I am a Vancouver based street photographer and camera reviewer and I find that both our working styles and philosophies are very similar. I have been struggling to put to words a clear working ideology and you basically said it in just a few sentences. I think I will make a similar video where I explain to people my philosophy versus my thought process when it comes to street photography. If you are ever in Vancouver I would love to have you as a guest on my channel, and if ever I'm in LA I would love to go shooting with you. Thank you again for sharing your years of experience. Regards, Take Kayo

How refreshing to see a photographer work it like you do. Especially is this day and age when a lot of the popular KZbin photographers are youngsters who have never stepped into a darkroom or have little experience shooting film. I kinda take the same approach to street photography. Keep it light and be ready with a quick comeback. Learned this from shooting weddings and going around looking for interesting candid moments. One thing I do is keep my camera in my hand so it’s hidden but ready to go. I don’t like it dangling around my neck. Sometimes I’ll keep a second camera with a strapped over my shoulder with the body off to the side. Great videos. You gotta new subscriber here.

Hey +John Free. Thank you. Your enthusiasm is inspiring, along with your images. Your comment around the 6:30 mark 'what a joy life is' nails it! I am now carrying my camera everywhere, shooting the things that catch my eye, being aware of composition and looking for gestures, contacts, emotion and movement. There are images to be made everywhere and I hope I make some good ones. Thanks again.

Thank you El Gusto. Anyone can do this if they only follow their heart. My friend Robert Frank told us to be a detective when it comes to our photography. Look in the right places to find a worthwhile subject. Subjects you photograph with your soul with the intent of showing mankind the powerful things in our lives we must share with others. This is not a hobby or casual pass time, but a true and honest attempt with great heart and skill to share with the world to make the world a better place because your visual poetry reached out to all from a true heart.
