What're some tips and tricks from around your shop or workspace?

John, what about making the stickers (that cover the detent track) attached with two of them together. So when you peel them off, you stick one on one side, the other on the other side, and then you have a loop between them to hold the blades when etching. I don't have time to do a sketch right now, but think of this: O=O Hah Edit * LOVE the podcast! :)

Put some ridged foam on the bottom of the bins with the end mills. Oriented to the length of the mill, they will fall in the slots and stop rolling about.

Tip from somebody who wears glasses. Please dont use your clothes to clean anything sensitive (like glasses, lenses). You will scratch them over time. Especially if youre in a shop where surfacegrinding (or any grinding for that matter..) is done.

i was thinking the same thing, he is around swarf all day and wiping a piece into the lense would ruin it

Bah humbug! I've been wearing glasses since the age of two; 58 years ago. While usually using an appropriate cloth, I don't always have one and the tail of my shirt-front comes to the rescue. No scratches of note; not even the polymer lenses that I now need because glass ones would break my nose due to the weight. :-( The *trick* is to use a portion of the garment not exposed to the filth and fragments.
@frollard6 жыл бұрын
I think he's implying that the lense itself was exposed to metal (and grinder abrasive) dust from the shop. Wiping that dust off with even a clean cloth can be very damaging to the microscopic coatings on microscope optics.
@piipaap6 жыл бұрын
A box of pre-moistened lens cleaning wipes next to the microscope would be good. Lubrication helps to avoid scratches in the coatings, and they are cleaner than the shirt. :)

1. Go/Nogo gages save huge amounts of time and increase part quality because they can't be manipulated or fudged, and because they're so quick, you're more likely to check more often. 2. Design fixtures that can't be loaded wrong. 3. The error tolerance of your measuring device should be ten times lower than the tolerance of the measured feature. Don't measure a +/- .001 feature with calipers that have +/- .001 error tolerance. 4. If you have the tool capacity in your machine, dedicate tools to operations. If op1 is a face and op2 is an edge with both ops in the machine at the same time, but both ops require a 3/32 endmill...use 2 endmills. This way, an offset for op1 won't effect op2 and damage to the tool in op1 won't scrap op2. In that same vein, dedicate finishing tools where possible rather than roughing and finishing with the same tool. I personally like to rough with insert tools and finish with solid carbide. 5. CLEAN EVERYTHING! You work better, feel better about it, look more professional if a client stops by, are able to find things, it's safer and it protects your investment long term.

Yes!! Love it Kenneth.

Print some covers for the Leica, and invest in some single use lens wipes for the eye pieces. A cover wouldn't hurt. Im willing to bet it wasn't cheap, protect that investment. You could ruin a lens using a sweater.

I was going to say the same thing, I'd make some flip covers like you see on a rifle scope. And yes don't use your shirt to clean the glass! That's the easiest way to scratch them!

Work-Pants! The ones with a lot of pockets-> no need for sharpie mounting! Fill pockets with: - 3 separate metal rulers: one to get bent for measuring tight places, one to keep nice for normal measuring and one to keep pristine for deburing plastics and aluminium. And give each one a kink in the non-zero end to facilitate picking it up off of flat surfaces. - Plastic scraper to be used in prying or getting chips or small parts out of ruts - Small flashlight -Thin work gloves Bonus tip: use superglue to seal cuts up real fast!

+1 on the computer beside the machine, I turned my whole desk (computer, printer, sound system, the whole nine yards) into a wheeled unit that way I can just wheel it to the machine that I'm using at the moment. You should try and fit an extra sink in the shop for parts washing and the occasional hand scrubbing. It'll prolly give you more workspace to wash parts, frees up the toilet and will help keep it more sanitary. Also rolls of paper tissue (not the paper towels for the kitchen) to wipe things down when you spill something (I love paper tissue). Lil safety tip: Get some absorption granules for when you spill oil or acid, makes cleaning up easier and safer

Little Neodymium magnets and hook magnets all over the shop great for holding hex wrenches and other light hand tools that live permanently on a machine and slapping up a print or note. If you wear an apron and it doesnt have a swinging chest pocket tape a magnet to the inside of you apron wear you stick your 6" scale so it doesn't take a floor dive every time you bend over.

John: have you thought about getting a laser cutter? It cuts foam insanely fast and leaves a very smooth sealed edge. can do very detailed lettering and graphics at lower power. You can't cut pockets in one operation but the front and back laser cut pieces are quick to glue together in a jig. The time saved over milling, deburring and mill clean-up could easily outweigh the gluing operation and much lower foam prices. Plus it frees up the mill for other things...

if your lighting is good enough a simple watchmakers magnification glass with like 15 or 30 magnification works better than your smaller one with LED (it's bigger, easier to place). or if you wear glasses / protection goggles, there's those flip down magnification lenses. get a dedicated analogue depth gage for setting a lathe job. tighten it during the job... release, set for the next. tape measure with magnet... or hot glue a magnet and leave it with the stock use long tubes or boxes to store and seperate stock (especially the smaller diameters and keep the 'rustable' stuff away from the 'good' stuff) and thanks for sharing, really appreciating the insights
@JohnGrimsmo6 жыл бұрын
nice! I've got an LED magnification glass on an articulating arm in my Amazon shopping cart for a near future purchase, we'll use them in a few dedicated spots. But 15-30 isn't all that much unless it's a nice microscope. The little 60x is still pretty sweet.

For the small end mills drills rattling in the trays. Get corrugated cardboard cut to size and rip one side off. Instant holders for small tools can also be oily if you need that. Some corrugated cardboard has large ripples and some small so there is some size options. Its a bit ugly but it works.
@Nickle3146 жыл бұрын
Tip 4. Why not print some corrugations in the bottom of the trays. That way the tools won't roll around. Add another on top and the previous tools are the corrugations for the next layer.
@JohnGrimsmo6 жыл бұрын
I've briefly thought about this, might try it some time. It should be pretty easy and they'd be easily stackable.
@Nickle3146 жыл бұрын
Be interested in seeing the outcome.
@frollard6 жыл бұрын
I was gonna suggest that for the rolling problem. It doesn't even have to be 1:1 for tool diameter - just enough that they don't roll. Don't put the corregations all the way to the end, have them 'chamfer' down towards the edge of the bin so thet there's room to get fingers in and grab the parts from their nestled state.
@van21726 жыл бұрын

Try some "kitchen non-slip" mat (usually available on a roll) on your Mill table to cover the mill table sections not used to fix parts. I say "try" because your coolant flooding may be too intense. If you're printing your own bins, there's nothing stopping you from integrating a roll-/slide-resistant pattern on the floor of the bin. (vis "nubs") Write on painter's tape before tearing off roll. That way you don't have to squeeze in the words. ;-) Drop a kitchen towel or similar over the microscope to keep the dust off; a hook beside the microscope to hang the cloth when it's not covering. You have a label maker... maybe print the "tape measure" to stick on the front of the stock shelves. Use the inside of your garment to wipe the dust, etc. off lenses. Use a comb to straighten your hair. :-P

For the metal drawer labels and a sharpie, buy some of the adhesive backed magnetic sheet at an art store and attach a sheet of paper to the adhesive side, then cut it up into strips for magetic labels which can easily be moved as need demands. Warning. Pedant comment: Sharpening notch, sharpening choil and finger choil are three separate things/designs. A sharpening notch is a tiny notch.
