I don’t want to sound like a troll but when it comes about the security of a mobile device collecting data is not the main concern. It is the very protection and security of your data you store on your device or in cloud . And from this perspective there is nothing more secure than Advanced Data Protection offered by apple that is real end to end encryption of your data. And this means that only you are the holder of the key encryption for your data backed up in cloud. You choose it in a random way and It’s never stored by apple servers. I know that most of the people don’t care 🤷 and don’t want to have one more thing to administer (the encryption key) but for me security is the most important aspect of a smartphone or computer and even if I do love audio quality more than pictures and video quality I will never make a compromise on the security of my devices. In the end I want to appreciate this podcast format , it is an absolute joy and also a very effective way to stay updated on the latest news and products from high end companies. Please keep up the excellent work.

The elimination of the 3.5 mm jack from smartphones is inexplicable. Probably corporate greed/laziness. The current state of portable audio/car audio in terms of sound quality to cost ratio is awful. I find it laughable paying for a hi-Rez, lossless streaming service and then listen to it over blutooth. The whole situation is a mess.

Yes, I am still using a galaxy S10 because it's the last galaxy phone with a 3.5 jack
@WillEhrendreich2 ай бұрын
Well, it's not that simple. It's very difficult to engineer these things, and there are actual trade-offs here. So, if the general public votes with their wallets about what is more important to them, that's what the companies make next. Most people, if given the choice, would say they would rather having a smartphone with a higher durability, specifically in water resistance, when compared to the ability to have a physical 3.5mm jack. It's genuinely very difficult to have the best of both worlds, while also keeping weight down, while keeping cost down, while keeping bulk down, etc.

I can't wait to see your review of Xperia 1 VI's audio jack. I was thinking about getting it before its release and now I feel lucky that it wasn't released in China so I'm basically forced to wait. And despite the fact that I'm "pulling a big wagon with a small pony" using Xperia 1 III for Sennheiser IE900, I'm satisfied for now with the quality of the sound after I put the stereo widening in the Dolby setting to middle or far, which helps amp up the sound quality to my amateur ears. But I would love to see a review from you if possible.

My current phone is failing and I'm fearing a new phone with no headphone jack. I am perfectly fine with bluetooth. I am however not interested in buying a good pair that I have to literally throw away when the battery dies. A jack to usb-c is not a much better solution. I have never experienced a jack output failing. I have on several phones had the usb become loose and fall out very easily or having increased dificulty charging (even after cleaning the port). Using the usb for charging AND headphones seems like a fast way to wear the port out.

I think the issue with most phones that come with headphones sockets is amplification, i.e. thrust. Milliwatts. If that Sony phone could push out closer to over at least 150 mws over a 4.4 socket, I think you'd find it no longer sounds tepid/weak. I'd be v surprised if your Sony phone has anything more that 50 to 80 mws over it's 3.5mm. That's why I ignore the 3.5 socket on my Android phone and use my Hiby FC4 on pentagon output. The FC4 pushes close to 400mws out the balanced out. Especially required as planar driver IEM's are my pref. I find planars need increased mws especially. Your problem with "tepid" flaccid sound is less to do with the DAC chip, it's the lack of power, I think...
@mayito85933 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how much of this was advertised by the phone, but the Sony Xperia 1VI had a redesign that tailored to power efficiency. I'd say if Sony were to distribute out the power of this phone, it would probably be to the camera. It all depends what their priorities are especially with what they think people are buying the phone for.

iOS outputs truebit audio- which means you get better audio with a dac dongle through the iPhone usb/lightning socket. Android natively downsamples the audio output. The likes of LG, Sony, ASUS by passed that Android limitation using hardware. You can get round that on other Android phones using the app USB audio player pro (which also supports TIDAL). Android 14 is following Apples’s route - however Google have a very poor track record when it comes to wired audio output (for a longtime pixels wouldn’t support USB c dac dongles - a bug which took Google a long time to address. The big issue for me with Sony and ASUS is their lack of long term support for updates. Sony did 2 major OS updates only (3 year’s security)- one of which was shortly after the phone release date. I believe Sony have increased that with the Xperia 1vi to 3 years OS and 4 years security - I don’t think that’s been applied retrospectively to the Xperia 1v. ASUS supports 2 major OS updates.

Love the content of this 'show'. One thing to keep in mind... phone makers want to reduce the number of openings. So it makes sense to remove the headphone jacks. That said... I agree with you about using IEMs and headphones w my iPhone. Bluetooth IEMs have a limited life and are expensive to constantly replace every couple of years. So at a minimum using the iPhone USB to headphone adapter that has a DAC chip in it... $9.00+tax is not a bad thing. I know from your reviews you love the Mojo2. If you had $1000 USD to spend. Do you buy better IEMs and a lesser DAC or do you go w the Mojo2 and then get lesser IEMs?

I know Sony decided not to release this phone in the US yet...probably because of a certain tech influencer slating the 1V rather unfairly but you can import one into the U.S. You have viewers in Europe and all over the world who speak English (many better than in America) and you should really be convincing Sony to make the ultimate smartphone...one with a true Walkman level of audiophile heavenliness built in (if only....) I first bought one of these “modern” “performance-class” wired earphones that sport a soft drum (the part that cups the canal opening) some 17 years ago when they first made their appearance in premium earphones. I didn’t like them AT ALL; i felt that the drum was always too big for the canal opening and hence in practical use NEVER really could be lodged successfully at the canal. Instead, i went back to the old-fashion, simple tear-shaped hard plastic bud that’s shaped like the current earpiece employed by Apple for their Earpods. For such a form factor, the best money-performance proposition for me is the Sony STH32. The major performance downside is that it doesn’t suffer a drop very well; one drop and you’ll likely find the earphone off - too bright highs, with a sibilance that will sear your ears. The second downside is that this model has been around so long that most Sony shops across the world no longer carries it. I think Alibaba’s T-Mall or Taobao (I could never tell the difference between them - you hear, Ali marketing guys!?!?) is one of the few places that still sells it. I get mine from a friend who gets them from there.

Thing is, everything has ESS chips now. It has basically become an industry standard. From my low end fiio gear to my Woo Audio Wa7 to my RME ADI-2 DAC; they might sound different to audiophiles, but that is more about implementation than having anything to do with the chips. It muddies the waters even more, I know, but people should stop caring about DACs. If the gear sounds good forget about it and listen to the music. If you don't like it, get something else. Don't fall for the marketing hype, yes some devices may sound different, but the tech has come so far that people would fail tests with an apple dongle and most gear, unless the implementation is using tubes or something else next level; but you will never know because it is muddied up with marketing bullshit. Marketers should be trying to convince us to spend money on summitfi high end DACs and demonstrate how they sound truly different, because I've demoed enough to know I don't think they are worth the money. [maybe never were?]

Open back means the earshell isnt fully closed. So you still can hear people talking around you or ambient sound like traffic. In my experience they are mory comfy for listening over a long time because you dont get so much pressure on your ears through the air that gets moved by the drivers. But with closed ones you get kinda cleaner, purer sound. Closed is important in studio environment because you get less sound bleed into the microphone. The beyerdynamics you mentioned are both awesome clean sounding hp and you can get almost every piece of it as spare part over decades. Make sure you get the ones with the right impedance for your needs. Low impedance if you mainly use it on your phone or mp3 player which usually have low power output.

Poor Srajan doesn’t get much of a word in once John gets going. Would appreciate a more conversational interaction to get the guest’s valued insights. Otherwise much appreciated, bang-up-to date content…

I’m more than happy with the SQ from my iPhone and Sony noise canceling wireless IEM’s for on the go use. For me you appear to be obsessing over things that really aren’t that important 🤷♂️

Some people also prefer to listen to music through laptop speakers rather than an iem.

The Miad is a lower midrange phone with great audio. It will have either CS43131 or CS43198 dc chips (likely cs43131 to keep costs down and those are good enough). I don't think Moondrop is at the forefront of Chinese spying. That would be the HuaWei's and Xaomi's. I know what Google does with my data (serve me stupid adds). The Chinese Government has different interests.
