Some skaters would prefer that we all do the exact same tricks the exact same way. Skatekeeping is lame AF. Flip outs are sick and the mall grab is super functional - it's literally a handle! Personally, I love street grabs. I come primarily from snowboarding where you grab your board any chance you get. I'd wager that ppl who rip on street grabs lack the mobility to do them. Great video John! Also - that is an AMAZING looking park!

I actively learned to push mongo in 93ish, because we were skating a spot with tiny pebbles everywhere and found it a bit more permissive with those little nightmares ... I can't push normally since and I don't care if it makes me look dumb, I skate for myself (and alone), not to look cool.

Push whatever way you are most comfortable, then push the other way when you're tired. If you cruise around a lot then you shouldn't push mongo by default because it's harder to steer mongo. I learned to skate pushing mongo, but learned to push normally because I ride cruisers around a lot and need really good steering. Cool thing is I have no issues pushing switch, but still need to get better at riding switch.
@skatedadcanada
@skatedadcanada 11 ай бұрын
I'm with you on everything but the mongo push, I know you disagree but that extra split second to setup your feet can make things harder. I specifically had to learn to push normally when switch because I was struggling to push mongo, get my feet setup, and then micro adjust in order to get ready in time for a few obstacles ... that said, I still push mongo for fakie and sometimes nollie stuff for the same reason. Economy of motion is a good thing my dude.
@martinsanchez6864

For me it’s not so much what people say about how it looks. Whether switch or regular I push with the back foot and control with the front. I would like to see a mongo pool/big transition skater. That’s wild to comprehend, I wouldn’t be able to do it.
@skatedadcanada
@skatedadcanada 11 ай бұрын
I'm sure some transition skaters push mongo, we just don't see it because they don't have to push often 😅@@martinsanchez6864 Skateboarding has a lot of this kind of thing though, lots of opinions and as long as we're not legit hating on each other its just a good conversation peace.

Having to adjust both feet vs having that front foot ready to go can be huge
@CollinGill7
@CollinGill7 10 ай бұрын
I feel the same, there’s an extra foot adjustment you have to make for regular tricks if you push mongo, and I push mongo for fakie tricks for the same reason. That extra foot adjustment is just one more think you have to think about before setting up for tricks Also not mall grabbing makes sense if you do grinds. Who wants wax and metal shavings on their hands?

I can relate to the guy who knows about skating but does not skate. I skate casually and can only do a few tricks, but I enjoy watching skateboarding and have learned alot about it and also also about skate culture by doing so. I've seen that skateboarding can be made to be very cookie cutter, which goes against the nonconformist attitude that alot of the same skaters who follow some or all of these rules are trying to create. It is contradictory and I like seeing skaters not feel confined to unnecessary and arbitrary social norms within it.

I think it's short for vibe check. As in to check if a outsiders vibe is appropriate to the group. And then there is getting vibed out, where the group acts hostile to whoever they feel doesn't fit in. Interestingly these days I am against gatekeeping in all aspects of my life. But I remember when I got into skating, even though I was both bad at it and couldn't afford the right clothes to look cool. I remember loving the feeling of being part of a niche subculture. Being different to the mainstream, a culture with its own little rules of what is cool and what is not.

@@dfpguitar Same here with those final thoughts. I can see why gatekeeping existed but it ultimately fell victim to it's own overuse and looking at through an older person's lense it just reeks of people trying too hard.

I'd argue a bike is more dangerous to skaters than a longboard. It's clunkier than a skateboard, but bikes are bigger, have a wider turning radius, and are harder to bail off of. If I was on my longboard (hypothetical, I don't go to skate parks) and was about to get in a skaters way, I'd step off and kick the board away from them. On a bike, best I can do is squeeze the brakes and try and lean to turn out of the way. Getting hit by a bike would probably do more damage too. I 100% agree though that it's on the rider to be respectful, and safe to those around them. I would cruise an empty park (Midwest has so many terribly paved roads and such, skate parks are usually buttery) but I can't/don't do tricks, so being there with other people would just be me in their way.
