Some skaters would prefer that we all do the exact same tricks the exact same way. Skatekeeping is lame AF. Flip outs are sick and the mall grab is super functional - it's literally a handle! Personally, I love street grabs. I come primarily from snowboarding where you grab your board any chance you get. I'd wager that ppl who rip on street grabs lack the mobility to do them. Great video John! Also - that is an AMAZING looking park!

I'm with you on everything but the mongo push, I know you disagree but that extra split second to setup your feet can make things harder. I specifically had to learn to push normally when switch because I was struggling to push mongo, get my feet setup, and then micro adjust in order to get ready in time for a few obstacles ... that said, I still push mongo for fakie and sometimes nollie stuff for the same reason. Economy of motion is a good thing my dude.
@martinsanchez6864 Жыл бұрын
For me it’s not so much what people say about how it looks. Whether switch or regular I push with the back foot and control with the front. I would like to see a mongo pool/big transition skater. That’s wild to comprehend, I wouldn’t be able to do it.
@skatedadcanada Жыл бұрын

I can relate to the guy who knows about skating but does not skate. I skate casually and can only do a few tricks, but I enjoy watching skateboarding and have learned alot about it and also also about skate culture by doing so. I've seen that skateboarding can be made to be very cookie cutter, which goes against the nonconformist attitude that alot of the same skaters who follow some or all of these rules are trying to create. It is contradictory and I like seeing skaters not feel confined to unnecessary and arbitrary social norms within it.
@Wyklepheph Жыл бұрын
Push whatever way you are most comfortable, then push the other way when you're tired. If you cruise around a lot then you shouldn't push mongo by default because it's harder to steer mongo. I learned to skate pushing mongo, but learned to push normally because I ride cruisers around a lot and need really good steering. Cool thing is I have no issues pushing switch, but still need to get better at riding switch.

I'd argue a bike is more dangerous to skaters than a longboard. It's clunkier than a skateboard, but bikes are bigger, have a wider turning radius, and are harder to bail off of. If I was on my longboard (hypothetical, I don't go to skate parks) and was about to get in a skaters way, I'd step off and kick the board away from them. On a bike, best I can do is squeeze the brakes and try and lean to turn out of the way. Getting hit by a bike would probably do more damage too. I 100% agree though that it's on the rider to be respectful, and safe to those around them. I would cruise an empty park (Midwest has so many terribly paved roads and such, skate parks are usually buttery) but I can't/don't do tricks, so being there with other people would just be me in their way.

James Jarvis absolutely does skate, and as far as I am concerned all of those rules are completely correct. Rules are meant to be broken, there is no judge and jury in skateboarding (except in your own head) so any rule that you don't care about does not need to apply to you. I break the NO street grabs rule regularly, I am aware of the illegality of my actions but that makes it feel better. Skateboarding is a strange beast, you can over think it, but that's not to say you shouldn't think about it all the time.

I never understood the hate mall grabs and mongo gets. A lot of people push mongo, at least in switched, and I've never questioned carrying a board by the trucks. It's a convenient handle and I'm not rubbing up against the griptape. "No street grabs" is essentially a self-imposed handicap. "No grabs" means you're just doing flip tricks and grinds. I swear the dork that came up with these rules is the same kind of dork that called rollerbladers "fruit booters" and blames scooter kids for messing up their line. Even though that line is taking them around the whole park and with no indication of where they're going.
