Nice video! A couple of comments for others: 1. Making a jig to cut bow-ties on a band saw is crazy easy!!! 2. When tracing with a marking knife, it is easier/better to start at each corner and cut inwards. That way, you cannot overshoot past the corner! 3. When chiseling at the edge, be sure to resist the urge to lever the chisel to break off the slice you just cut! Or you will bend the top of the edge outwards.

John great tutorial. The inlay within the inlay is beautiful. I also have to tell you how much I love hearing you say "yinz". I grew up in Johnstown but now I live in Texas I've been here so long I catch myself saying "y'all". I need to get back to PA for a visit soon. No I am not a Dallas fan. I'm a Steelers fan till the coffin drops. And beyond. 🖤💛🖤💛🖤

I'm getting so many ideas for things I want to do from watching videos from many channels on wood working but I'm certainly binging a lot of yours and the best bit is that when you say if I get X many likes I'll do a video on how to do xyz I generally find you have already done it and I get to roll my binge right into that. That said you still get the likes from me and when I get my workshop set up I plan to try inlaying animal silhouettes to tables although I think it will take me a while to pull it off.

I use a similar technique. I try to use a rip off of an end of a board so I can make several from one scrap then I cut the first angle and scribe a line so i can use it for reference and make minor adjustments to the size. I make a few extra so I can get the exact fit I want. It helps to have one of those screw down cam action clamps.

At 10:05 you chamfer the top edge of the inlay, but we all make mistakes, no biggie. At least I think I heard you say the blue mark goes on the bottom. Well, it all came out great in the end.
@BoDizzlin
@BoDizzlin 4 жыл бұрын
He chamfers the "top" from the layout (non-tape side), because that side is actually going to the bottom. The side that is touching the table top during layout will be your top face at the end because it matches the line you cut. If you made your bowties perfectly square it shouldn't be a problem either way; however if they aren't square and you do it the other way you're likely to have gaps along the top where the wrong face doesn't quite line up with your slot.

The blue tape idea is a good one for this application. The only caution I'd give to your process is the depth of the inlay. Being so thin in relation to the thickness of the crack, it's unlikely that the bowtie will do much to control seasonal movement of the crack. But, you can still do a similar one coming from the other side, which would help stabilize the piece.
