Floating shelves made from the same type of wood as the desk would look good on that black wall. Should work some sort of lighting features in somewhere too. You should also explore the idea of a real waterfall somewhere in your office too. The sound of water can really help you relax after a long day.

Hey John, you're probably going to want additional sound deadining in the office and honestly something to keep the pings of the metal on the desk to keep from being picked up from your mic. Sound damping panels for the walls and signage behind you and a couple sheets of dynamat under the desk to keep the desk noise quiet while recording
@DREAMTYMSAMS2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Maybe some Dynamat or one of its knock-offs on the underside of the metal to reduce the ping.
@DREAMTYMSAMS2 жыл бұрын
Note: Dynamat autocorrects to Dynamite which would also work for sound deadening...once. It would also work for John deadening which I'm sure none of us want.

The desk looks really classy, I would have thought to use it on the other side, have your monitors and computer on the metal, but then keyboard, mouse, and writing on the live edge. (however, would require a rebuild...) As for the wall, I'd think a collection of shelves, live edge, and metal would look really good, but also maybe some large pieces of art/signs/etc used to house/disguise sound dampening would be helpful as your podcast studio gets more heavily used.
@markbrown75382 жыл бұрын
if your not happy with the finish on the metal side of the desk I recommend wet sanding with 1000-2000 grit and then buffing with automotive polishing compound. This is what I did when I painted my old tanker desk to make it slightly above average.

Suggestion for grinding and when you use a circular saw to cut sheet metal: face shield or put on a welding helmet that has the auto dimmer. It keeps the sparks off your face. Also, any time anyone is in the shop space for any reason, they need safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield on. It is an OSHA regulation and it will save an eyeball or at least the pain of getting a splinter or steel filing from a spark in the eye and having to go to the ER to get it removed. Also, you only get two eyes, so don't waste your spare one when some cheap safety glasses will protect them. If the camera crew needs to look into a view finder to film, look at options for safety guards for the camera for protecting their eyes. My qualifications for this are being on multiple safety committees at industrial sites, including a plant that manufactured explosives and required training related to safety to be on, and the industrial first aid training I received that covered treating eye injuries. My instructor for the first aid class was an EMT with over 25 years of experience in the field. He had seen the difference between when there were safety glasses and when there weren't. It is the difference between going blind and just having a lot of surgeries and having a bad eye afterwards. One of the companies I worked for had a hall of shame for unsafe things they found and hall of fame for safety equipment that saved people. Lots of safety glases shattered or with grinder disc shard embedded in them, but the photo of the worker with just a black eye instead of an eye patch.

Awesome Desk! As to your Black Wall, just a suggestion, divide the space into 3 sections. Top Center section, large business logo signage. Sign would be the focal point. Left And right sides, 2 possible ideas. 1st would be photo gallery of your completed projects. Gives your future clients samples of what your shop can do for them. Tells a story. 2nd idea, floating shelves. For both ideas at the bottom would build cabinets to store merchandise, forms, and other office/shop supplies. Also a couple file drawers for client work. Always a good idea to keep paper back-up in case of computer failure.

Awesome job John, and team. That desk idea is BadA$$ my dudes. And I can't see what you're seeing, or feel what you're feeling on your desk project through a screen. Lol. (Damn that would be cool! Lol) But I think it looks amazing! I hope to see what you end up doing with the desk. And as far as the wall behind your desk. That question really, well it'll just depend on a couple things. Is your office, an area that you would like to set up, to have space, to give your customers the ability to come in, set down and go over plans with you? And for others to sit down and talk with you about a job they are inquiring about? Or is it an office that will only be seen on camera, by you and your guys that work alongside you? The only reason I'm asking is, if it'll be a place for clientele to sit down and discuss spending their money with you. I would dress it as such, I'd go all in, put your company logo behind the desk, some cool lighting behind the logo. Maybe a coffee and tea bar. Think car dealership, Just a higher class setup, as new people, as well as returning customers walk into a, custom furniture makers shop! Set it up to scream, that you know what you're doing! That they should spend their money with you! You know what I'm saying? However if your office, is gonna be another room just for you to work from. And clients won't be in there. Then maybe go for function over form.. Shelves for stuff you need at hand. You know, anyhow just my thoughts. Thanks for the great content.

The paint, floor and desk look great! Nice transformation. As far as the wall goes, I’d put what motivates you the most to make your business a success.. your family. Cut out a large wooden or metal circular saw blade but, instead of your logo in the center engrave a picture of your family. Surround that with floating shelves that ‘frame’ the picture creating a half circle on each side with the shelve lengths.

Some kind of built in cabinet for storage and each cabinet door panel is a piece of shop art. For example, one door could be small pictures of your favorite joinery. Another could be measurement conversions. Another could be types of welds and how they’re used. My thought is your CNC could carve that stuff out. This is what I want to do in my shop.

If you are going to record podcasts you'll need to put up some acoustic treatment. In general it doesn't matter where in the room, it just hast to be in the room... however if you can reduce the sound at the first reflection it would help. So put the "bulk" of the acoustic treatment on the wall you face and talk towards during the podcast. Second, I've seen some other comments about a french cleat system that sound awesome so I vote for that! Would allow you a lot of flexibility in what you place where. Third if it's a video podcast then having a sign in the background with the pod cast title, or even just your name would be great. Honestly, just your name makes a lot of sense and is general enough to use for anything you need it for.
@Daphoid2 жыл бұрын
All of the above: - Floating shelves, - Signage where a TV might go - Art based acoustic panels on most of the walls (and ceiling honestly if you find it really reverb filled) Then - Some cable management trays under the desk, grommets to hide all the cables for monitors and stuff - monitor arms mounted on drill through mounts (since you can't clamp with the chairs being on the other side for visitors Only downside really is loosing the sit stand part. Wouldn't have worked with the waterfall but you could've put the slab on those and lifted (uplift desk sells a 4 legger that lifts 535 lbs).

Put your saw blade logo on the black wall, but it needs to be huge, like at least 6’ diameter. It needs to be 3-D and lit up with led strip lighting. Then incorporate some live edge floating shelves to match your desk. Then you need something that pops, I’m thinking like the tables that float with the chains and some cool lamps on them that are made from epoxy. IDK, have a great vacation!!!

An Engineering Teacher always told our class that "You can't Polish a Turd". In an attempt to prove him wrong, we used the hot wax film machine to create surface we could polish. Long story short the melting temperature of a turd happens to be lower than wax.
@Jack-SecITGuy2 жыл бұрын
For the back wall, do a combination of wood shelving and canvas pictures that are stuffed with noise dampening. It will help with that reflective sound you get in your office. Also, fill the shelves with fake green plants. You don't have to take care of them and they give a pop of color that sets off the wood grain really well.

John, I like the ideal of metal and wood. I’ve never done epoxy before, but could you do the same concept and purposely leave some sort of a gap(river) in the middle to add epoxy to? This would make it so your joint doesn’t have to be perfect and it would include another type of table you’ve made often. I’m not even sure if epoxy would stick to the metal, but in theory, I think it would look awesome.

I had a guy order shelving that , best way either of us could describe it was a giant shadow box. Multiple various size squares inside a frame I thought it sounded nuts but ended up being one of my favorite projects. Use some of the same live edge walnut from those trees (and/or cutoffs) to make a series of staggered floating live edge walnut shelves behind the desk, which will tie the room together. The walnut will also go well with the black/darker paint visually.

You'll probably want to put something on the bottom of the desk's metal paneling to deaden the sound it carries when you tap/hit it. Maybe like a foam rubber coating or something. I'd also sit on the other side where the live edge is, so your hands aren't prone to causing noise on that metal while you're recording.

Here's an idea: make a hexagon out of wood about 1 foot in diameter. Cut a 45° angle on one half of the edges. Do the same on the other half, but facing in the opposite direction. Make dozens more. Paint them in slight variations of black. Now if you screw some of them onto the wall at the right distance and in the right orientation you get a nice patterned wall. But because of the 45° angles you can use the remaining hexagons like a kind of french cleat system to hang pictures, old tools, lighting, speakers, what have you.
