Күн бұрын

After getting on the ferry in Helsinki we had no idea what to expect from Eastern Europe, our research was purposely focussed on legal, insurance and dog matters so that we arrived in each new country with no preconceptions.
This paid off big time as we have been totally blown away with the beauty of each country and don't even start on how amazing the people of these countries have been to us either.
Join is as we discover Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania along with Alex, from the KZbin channel ‪@MispronouncedAdventures‬
What are we doing and why have we called this trip an EXPEDITION? The word Expedition is used in all our video titles as this word means "promptness or speed in doing something, with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration" and this fits in perfectly with our plan to not only stay out of the UK for as long as possible, but to sample each country we visit to see if we want to come back for longer in our future travels.

Sveiki atvykti į Lietuvą! I lived in Lithuania for 12 years. 95 until 07. Married a Lithuanian and both kids born there so go back a lot. It is a great country and so much to see. The coast, Nida and it's dunes, the cities, the east and the lakes. I lived in the North so know the crossing you came through. We were 25km from the Latvian border.

This trip is so similar to ours in 2015.. So many happy memories.. We loved the architecture in Talin 🇪🇪 Strange driving past the old disused border crossings.. Intriguing to see why and where yr stopped on the next episode Poland roads were AWFUL !! Hope they have improved.. Loads of Truck stops with sexy bars for drivers entertainment 😆 🚐💨 🇪🇪 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 🇵🇱❤️

John. Fun "Gadget fact" Estonian internet is some of the best (maybe the best) in the world. Some years ago when they needed to upgrade their phone system they were offered secondhand equipment (I want to say by Finland?) But opted to build their own fully digital system. As a result they now have a fully digital society enabling everything from taxes, to voting to optical prescriptions to be fulfilled remotely. They also have more tech startups per head than Silicon Valley. (Originally made aware by Robert Llewellyn (Kryten, Red Dwarf) on his fully charged YT channel)

Also invented Skype. For such a small country, especially considering how it was backwatered by the Soviet regime for so long, Eesti is incredibly technologically advanced. Maybe I'm a little biased, but it's true...

It looked very nice in Latvia. In the south of Poland you have the city of Krakow that is very beautiful and then on the other side of the border to Slovakia is the beautiful Tatra mountains. Also they have very special houses on the polish side of the mountains. Have a safe trip!

Another good video, thank you. I'm not sure where you are with regards to Schengen border crossings. I don't know whether you remember but back when you entered France, you mentioned in your vlog you weren't sure your passports had been stamped with your entry date into France. I said it might be worth checking because of the 90 day rule, but you were happy to see how it went. Well we've just got back from a tour to Spain. We got back on day 84. However! Anns' passport hadn't been stamped as returning to The UK in June, when she came back from Lanzarote after two weeks, or when she left The UK when we left in September. Consequently, according to the dates in her Passport she'd been there for the entire time and was well over her 90 days. It seems the UK border staff and systems weren't taking it as serious as they should be! We were held up at the EuroTunnel border whilst the officials sorted out where to go next. I remembered we had the emails with flight times and dates on. After 20 minutes they decided to accept them, rather than start filling in paperwork for a prosecution! The moral of the tale is please make sure you now have any passports stamped properly when you cross a border, especially when it comes to counting the 90 day rules. Stay safe and Bon Route.
@johnmandy

We’re out of Schengen now and despite not having any french entry stamps in our passport the Hungarians stamped us out and the Romanians stamped us in with no issues at all. Keeping records of your travels is a must these days though.

Did you walk down to the old city gate that used to be at the sea shore/ Now about a mile from the sea but it is the non-descript 4-storey building with the plaque on the outside that people walk by. 13:40 Please don't get me wrong, but I believe you are wrong. It doesn't have to be eaten before posted date. And so many people are wrong on this topic, which is why I'm allowing myself to mention it. Dry goods often have a "Best before" date, at least here in Norway. You can eat it months after that date. Even canned goods can be eaten LONG after their printed date, as long as it's proper canned goods and not like "half preserved". If it says expiry date, that's different and should be followed. But milk, eggs and other things can be Ok to eat after printed date. Dry goods as I say, absolutely no problem. 1 year old tomato soup in cupboard? No problem! Open, look/smell/taste. If it looks ok, and it smells ok, and it tastes ok, you can eat it. I found 2 year old squash at my cabin. (The kind with lots of sugar) It was unopened, but didn't look bad. Opened it, didn't smell bad, and it tasted normal.. :) Sent a pic to an old coworker that almost got a heart attack because she genuinaly though "it had expired".. Which was not true, sugar is a conservative :) Thanks for the video! :D
@johnmandy
@johnmandy 2 жыл бұрын
Oh we eat things out of date all the time, definitely do not like wasting food and will happily sniff test things - it’s the wonder of social media that makes me mention it as if I don’t others will call me out for eating expired food 😁🤷🏼‍♀️
@AndreasEUR
@AndreasEUR 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmandy hey :) yeah, it's a shame people don't understand expiry Vs best before. . It causes "being called out" as you sayz but I would claim "wrongfully called out" :) I do see how it minimises "reeeee, expired food" comments :) thanks for your time :)

Hey, I’ve been in Latvia a few times! As my wife (the good lady in front of this pic) is born there. If you come back there, they’re quite proud of their chocolate. Which is as good as any. (Look for the Laima brand.) And if you like canned sprats in oil they have a tradition of smoking them that must be tried. Black and gold cans, mostly, labelled with “Sprotes”. There’s no need to buy west-European foods in these countries, as the local varieties are often at least as good. Or how can I say it? They didn’t really learn to cheat with the foods behind the iron curtain, so now you have some bad stuff (which is mostly imported) but also some really good quality. While west European foods are mostly about advanced cheating. Just in case you’ll be back! 😊
@anhatur
@anhatur 2 жыл бұрын
I have to add: You can visit the Laima factory in Riga if you’re really into chocolate. Short story, Latvians got into the business early and had chocolatiers educated at the best, before the iron curtain fell. Which the rich among the “equals” appreciated, so it became renowned in Eastern Europe like Swiss and Belgian chocolate in the west. For sweet biscuits to go with tea and coffee, you can also go with the related “Selga” brand. Herbal teas, cheeses and meat products should also be tried, not just in Latvia but in all of Eastern Europe. You’re missing out on a lot by going for just pizza and burger, so try it out slowly and I think you’ll appreciate it.

So many things to enjoy in this video! Beautiful Russian dolls Mandy! I asked you guys this before you started your trip, but now that you're well into it, I wonder how you are finding the road signs and rules of each country. Are they similar enough to Britain to be comfortable with, or are they different? I think this is something that would worry me if I was driving there. Canada and USA are similar enough, but subtle differences can throw you off at times.

Ah thanks Suzane.. they’ve been pretty straight forward I think.. a few we’ve had to google or use google translate with but they’ve been more obscure for ski routes and whatnot

Hi John and Mandy, Another great video, thank you for all the effort that both of you put on your videos, they are highly appreciated by all your of us. Now a small technical question for John, since you mentioned this product on your channel. I have a Victron Smart Shunt, and I realising that the information provided through Bluetooth is not reliable at all, since the most of the time it looks that the Shunt is stuck at 100%…since the battery Bluetooth if giving me values completely different. Have you experienced similar situations? Thanks in advance and keep enjoying this beautiful world, hope to be able to do it too. Best regards
@johnmandy
@johnmandy 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with the BMV 712 and lithium is that it cannot accurately read the state of charge of your batteries. The first thing to do is go to your battery Bluetooth app, take a note of the battery percentage, then go into your shiny, settings, battery info & enter the correct value in State of Charge. You’ll need to do this every day, or just ignore the battery percentage reading on the BMV

Wow! Just amazed at your trip. Stunning video as always, I like the pan feature you have. So, weird food called Salt Skum! I would have to keep the wrapper, frame it and hang it as a treasured momento. It reminds me of toy gun caps I found in Italy called Super Bum. I had them for years, but new management cleared them out. I am very much looking forward to the next episode. All the best, Pete

Watch out when you head into wider Eastern Europe you'll have to buy special tickets vignettes to use the motorways and there is always a little hut where you can buy the vignette at an inflated price as they rip you off with currency fees. The official Government kiosks or terminals are usually close by so be aware.
@johnmandy

That’s ok, we don’t use motorways. You get to see far more of a country by staying off motorways.
