This is great for people that use an ipad for multiple events such as church, studio, the car, or where ever. Just doc your ipad and connect the usb hub and you're ready. My only question, the powered usb hub doesn't need ac power to run? I heard you mention that everything was getting power from the ipad.

You stated that all ten keyboards/MIDI controllers are being powered by the iPad. That is incorrect. The electrical power for the keyboard/MIDI controllers is being provided by the powered USB Hub you connected them to. The keyboards are only sending MIDI information from the keyboards to the iPad to control various instrument Apps you have open on your iPad. But, the iPad cannot provide enough DC power to provide electrical power to all of those keyboard controllers. I also have a 2018 iPad Pro, a Nektar lx88+, and M-Audio Axiom 61. The iPad will only provide enough electrical power for the Nektar lx88+. The iPad, by itself, will not power both of those controllers. I require a powered USB Hub to provide the electric power to the keyboard controllers.

Of course it can handle it and more. The question is whether it can handle simultaneous midi streams and generate the proper sounds in realtime.
@TheIvoryman
@TheIvoryman Жыл бұрын
I have the same iPad Pro. I have two keyboard controllers attached to it. But, the number of keyboards has nothing to do with your question, if I’m reading it right. I believe what you’re asking is how many different Apps can be open on the iPad, simultaneously, that can be instantly accessed. I play out regularly and have used this setup for a few years. And, I have 9 different Apps all open and running in the background so that I can instantly access sounds from from any or several Apps at all times. For example: for one keyboard setup I have a Rhodes EP from (Neo Soul Keys Studio) set up to be controlled by my Nektar lx88+ set to MIDI channel 15. And, my M-Audio Axiom, set to MIDI channel 4 is controlling 2 different string sample sets from SampleTank, 5 different soundfont files from bs-16i, and 4 different string sample sets from iSymphonic. So that’s 11 string sample sets from 3 different Apps all layered together and set to MIDI channel 4. And a Rhodes piano set to MIDI channel 15 for a total of 12 different sounds from 4 different Apps all running at the same time, flawlessly(no hiccups). And I have many other multiple sound setups that are more complex than that, consisting of 4 split zones with multiple layers of different sample sets in each zone all running smoothly and with no latency issues.

Subscribed! Thanks for the insight of using iPads in live situations! Can you recommend an app to trigger samples live? In my band I have to do that sometimes. I'm currently working with MainStage and use the EXS24 for that, but I would like to make the transition to iPad for my live gigs. I would like to trigger the samples with a key on my keyboard, just like I do with the EXS24. Have you any experience with the Camelot Pro App? This seems like a worthy replacement for MainStage! Thanks again for your awesome channel!

Roland A49 with additional drumpad for orchestral style organic music production or something else? I already have a basic 61 key arranger and I want the best combo of both to fulfill each other's gaps and tagteam them. I have a yamaha psre353 as an arranger but I cant access it for now because of lockdown. I was planning to buy a midi keyboard with good keybed and minimum knobs and faders. Since I play piano style and am a beginner in DAW, I have no idea how important are knobs and faders and pads for things such as looping and all. Is it better to buy a roland a49 along with a separate akaipad or buy something else? I want the best combo with my arranger since it can be used as a midi too but only for its keybed. I mostly play piano and strings but would love to start learning looping, altough I have seen mostly looping requires pads too in midi. What will the best buy for me considering all of this? I'm really confused.

Great video. I wonder if the setup would allow all keyboards to be played at the same time. Of course you know that using a powered hub is the way to go. You can power the hub with a power pack if you need portability. I have a power pack made by Anker that powers my iPad Pro and iPhone for a few days of busy use. It has 3 USB ports to power 3 devices at the same time. FYI Gospel Musicians recommends to keep their sounds on an external SSD drive. I use a 64gb USB 3 thumb drive plugged into the Apple USB 3 Camera Connection Kit. The thumb drive has the expansions for all their apps and I can just leave it plugged in. My next iPad Pro will be the one with at least 256gb. I have 128 now and it not enough.

I am not sure if I am right but, the initial usb hub is type c to USB A connected to the iPad. The second USB hub is is a powered USB hub connected to the rest of the MIDI devices. So if the iPad is powering anything at all it would be the first three devices connected to the firs hub, that’s assuming that those devices are not DC powered themselves. Correct me if I am wrong.

I've been kinda wanting to do the same thing but on one to two keyboards in a lightweight one man band kind of deal. I'm not up on midi like I was when I was younger. Currently I use my Casio CTK 7200/Novation Launch Key and iPad/Android/Laptop to gig with. Most times I have the Casio and ipad. I'm not good with drums which is why I use the programmed drum beats or auto comp. I kinda of like doing this at times but want it all to be simple for someone who doesn't program much. At some point want to upgrade my keyboard for better polyphony and drum beats. I'm thinking I probably could do it with just the Casio and midi controller once I find the right iPad apps. I basically wish there was a workstation keyboard app that could meet those needs. Sampletank I love but not enough polyphony on my 6th gen iPad. If that had better polyphony I would be straight with that and midi controllers.

John, thanks for all your awesome content. The other day I asked you a question in comments of video comparing NI pianos. You mentioned you use a buffer setting of 256. I tried it, and it works great for latency. The only thing is I notice on the low octaves, I get almost like a slapback when I release the note. I tried all sorts of settings and doesn’t seem to correct it. Have you ever experienced this or have any thoughts on that?

Hey John Mike, question: how can one get audio out of an iPhone with out a ear phone put? If I’m using the charging lightning connection to keep phone charged? I only have USB ports. Is there a USB to 1/8” adapter?

I've been watching some of your midi keyboard videos, maybe you can help me with my decision. I'm a pianist and I have a Kawai Grand Piano and a Motif XS8. I need a keyboard controller for synths and the occasional piano. I love the action on my motif xs, but I don't want to pay that level of cash for another motif. Is there a controller that you can recommend that has a keybed that's light enough for synths, trumpets, etc, but that is also not all springy (ie 25 keys, 49 keys, etc) so that I can also play some piano parts? THanks.

Check the m-audio hammer 88

For piano the M-Audio Hammer 88 is a good choice. It has the weighted hammer action. But, it has no other control features that would be good for controlling synthesizers. There is a new version of the Hammer 88 called the ‘88 Pro’. Gives you the weighed action with 9 sliders, 8 rotary encoders, drum pads and several switches. Price is $800. And it weighs 40 pounds. If weight and/or price is a factor, go with a Nektar lx88+. Same amount of built in controls, but has a semi weighted keyboard. Sells for $320. And it only weighs 18 pounds.

Hello, nice video. I am thinking about getting the SL88 studio or M audio hammer 88. I am leaning towards the Sl88 studio. Does this controller work with Garageband on the iPad? Any answer would be greatly appreciated!!

So would I be better off buying an iPad Pro than buying a Mac for recording?
@Johnmike
@Johnmike 4 жыл бұрын
Adam Greenwell depends on the level of recording you are looking to do...beatmaking, recording yourself playing...an iPad is perfect for it...but if you are trying to do serious production...I’m talking recording bands, mixing, mastering...recording songs with 100+ track counts...etc then you’ll need a MAC for that
