You need to be seriously cautious about what you say if anything happens to your iPad! I had (past tense) a new M1 MacBook Air, and had three port failures in the first 6 months. They repaired it twice, then asked what I was doing, I responded ‘just leaving it on overnight running backups and file transfers to a few drives.’ Do you use a USB hub? ‘Yes,’ I responded. “That’s why its failing.” Warranty and AppleCare voided, no refunds, and I now have a $1,000 brick. They seized the USB hub as the reason, and told me to seek restitution from them. So… SAY NOTHING if something fails!

20 might be a stretch as you said but I saw Darek Cobbs run 8 boards on CP Voicenotes tour 😂 so say you make one board a solid synth (motif,roland,nord etc) but keep the main volume down/play as a controller and you run that as a contingency if the iPad goes out. I'd run a synth and 7 controllers in Darek's double stack diamond layout for sure. Run on the synth while a tech resets the iPad in the back for a worst-case scenario, lol.

You becoming a mad scientist for this John! 😅😅 It would be more interesting to test polyphony and how the iPad manages to handle all that information without exploding, now that would be something. Maybe for your next video, you should invite your friends/church musicians/producers who play to try and write a song and then perform it with all those keyboards, that would be really interesting.

Omg! That’s nuts! I have a Yamaha P-80 which hasn’t been used in years. Circa 1999-2000 I think. I’m resurrecting it (it’s action is a bit clunky. Key return is a tad loud, the pads have decayed). But I’m watching these videos to see if I can get midi din to iPad so the kids can use their iPads for piano lessons. So yes, technology has changed, but the basics of midi haven’t so it appears, I’m yet to test but it appears even 22yo good quality Yamaha keyboard is still useful with a modern iPad. Fingers crossed. My main problem is the poor old P-80 needs some service so I’m going to open it up and see what’s what with the noisy keys and perhaps swap out some springs if I can get them.

How are you getting audio out of the iPad if you are connecting the hub through the usb port?
@joeb.masterkeyz Жыл бұрын
Very very Interesting... Is this set up solid enough and reliable on an actual stage/event where it counts? Where no errors can be tolerated? How do you safe guard the system from stuck midi notes, system hanging and what nots during a performance? Can the ipad be connected to an interface for a multi output set up to FOH console in some way? Really curious to see someone put this into practice on an actual event and share their experience..

Helpful video…to see that’s possible! Here’s a somewhat relayed question. I have my iPad Pro and a midi usb keyboard plugged into my macmini directly (no hubs) I trusted the computer and enabled the iPad for audio input…and that works fine. The usb keyboard works on things like Ableton Live, but I can’t get the iPad to see it as a midi device. I wonder if you, or anyone reading this sees anything obvious I’m missing? Cheers and Thanks

Yes, inquiring minds want to know how best to get audio out of the iPad Pro. It’s got one USBC connector so it seems that a USBC hub is required. Do we then go analog 1/8” headphone out from one of those and hope the dac in it is adequate? Or, go digital to something else?

I have my iPad Pro 12.9 Gen 5 (M1 chip) connected to my MIDI controller via the Anker interface you described. My synth apps work and sound comes out of the iPad speakers, but how to do I get the audio to my mixer? This new iPad Pro does not have a 1/8" audio out jack. Any way to use this device for live audio, or do I have a $1500 brick on my hands? Thanks!
@larrykent39982 жыл бұрын
PROBLEM SOLVED! In case any others here are interested in how I did this: Use the other USB-3 jack on the Anker to run a cable to my Audiobox interface, and that plugs into the mixer. Using a powered USB hub (with four USB inputs, I can plug two or more MIDI controllers into the hub, and the hub gets plugged into the Anker interface, and the Anker goes into the iPad Pro via the Thunderbolt/USB-C port.

@sleekitwan2 жыл бұрын
Well the direction I have taken is a pretty ‘Cartesian’ one…I decided I needed to have a hub to provide all the i/o that Apple stripped the iPad Pro M1 of - so that’s a used $150 Belkin F4U095 aluminium thing, with all the USB3 outputs (and inputs of course, it’s two-way comms!) I could need. A single 3.5mm jack at the rear goes into my (mono of course) QTX 15” busker amp, and it has it’s own massive brick of a power supply and a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C looking) port at the rear, that I connect to the iPad Pro M1. Essentially, Apple ‘outsourced’ the messy and space-consuming business of ports or input/outputs, to third party suppliers. My solution is not perfect, but it grew out of latency - with my little BaseUs corner USB-C hub, there’s a slowboat to China approach to my MIDI controller/keyboard getting anywhere, especially to the QTX busker amp. This method is much faster, but I cannot overcome the issue of not being able to get the iPad Pro speakers to work sweetly with this setup. I unplug the whole thing when I want to use them, or put earbuds into the corner hub that now hangs in ungainly fashion from the TB3 port at the back of the Belkin. Here’s an odd thing - the Apple proper earbuds, I got an adapter to take the 3.5mm jack from, but no matter, direct or not, Belkin, or BaseUs hub, the proper earbuds try to send the volume to max or min like a shot, if you dare to touch either of the up/down inline controls! It’s improved with iPadOS 15.3.1, but still a bit iffy. You know what does work? A cheapo knock-off Samsung copy set of earbuds, bought ten for ten bucks on ebay! All inline controls, work perfectly, despite them being the Samsung controls inside, and the Apple ones using a different Apple-specific protocol. So now I have been put in the position of essentially steering about $225 of money, to Belkin or the guy who bought a Belkin new, and BaseUs, and possibly Samsung or at least a knock-off of Samsung, on ebay. Is this better? It’s got to be about trimming the edges of the iPad Pro M1 device, but that wouldn’t have mattered to me, I never take it anywhere. I just like touchscreen and hate organising bus(es) in DAWs! So I use GarageBand on iPad and Cubasis sometimes. Avoided a ‘proper’ audio interface so far, but we’ll see! Incidentally, the music keyboard, and my ten dollar Chinese wired keyboard I am using right now, both go into an Anker hub with its own brick power supply, and they go into the Belkin, which then ThunderBolts things to the iPad. I view this in technical terms as a ‘star’ topology, with the Belkin being at the centre (sounds right, being a ‘dock’ or hub), and the iPad Pro M1 attached by the single 40Gbps short 50cm TB3 cord to the back, the BaseUs corner hub uncomfortably struggled into the other USB-C/TB3 socket at the back (right-angled connector! - a short extension cable ordered), and as I say the Anker 7-port USB3 hub comes in via it’s ‘quite fast’ 5Gbps USB3 cable. The Anker also has 3 extra USB3-looking ports, but they might be strictly charging I think. This idea of the Belkin being the central nexus for cables, came to me because with TB3 being almost instant, it’s as if it’s part of the iPad. This was unavoidable once I acquired a large portable Western Digital HDD (Elements it is called) and you guessed it, it goes into the Anker too, or it could go into the Belkin, and it’s quite fast, I can put a GarageBand 1Gb song over in about a minute, and can actually work from there if I wanted, not quite as fast as my very good 75Mbps connection to the internet/iCloud, but good. Phew! Sorry is that what you call ‘over-sharing’?! Take care all. PS no I am not terribly pleased at being made to lash out on a hub/dock after buying a two grand device, but there we go. I got it used, so paid about half the price, of this top-spec iPad Pro M1 unit. Back-taxes got returned, orI couldn’t have done it. Thanks for the vid to the host, and I am glad to read about similar experiences and the solutions people arrive at.
