Quick disclaimer: Before you go sticking your shave soap in the microwave, remember to KEEP AN EYE ON IT! Small soaps like the one in this video melt quickly and will start to foam. This one only needed 15 seconds to melt into the bowl.

I know this is an old review but if you put a little bit of water is the bowl first then put the soap on top of that then you leave it overnight the soap will stick in place and it is easy to remove if you need to take it out.

It's 2024 and im still using the old style VH boar's hair. I've almost got it broken in and I love how it feels.

I've been enjoying my Van der Hagen set. The brush does shed a little, but not much. For me the soap is great. I get it at my local grocery store for under 3 bucks. It lathers nicely and because it's not tallow based it rinses away easily in cold water. The scented soap has a very mild scent that just smells nice and clean. I think it's a great value and it's prefect for me. :)

What do I do with the soap do I take it out of the bowl and clean the suds off under the tap or do I just leave the leather and soap in the bowl ?

You can keep the soap in the bowl.

How do you clean the brush for first time use. Do you just use warm water and soak it ? Or do you put some soap bowl to clean it ?

Just rinse it off and dry. Do not soak the brush with water, it will melt the glue and start to shed. Also avoid hot water for the same reasons as above.

I bought the set. It's shit. Soap is useless...literally. It doesn't lather. It even looks cheap. Haven't decided about the brush yet, but it loses bristles. Time will tell. I use Barbasol shaving foam in a can now until I can get some real soap for DE wetshaving.
