PHP is far from dead. The amount of programs that run on it along with other programming languages is insane.

By that logic Visual Basic 6 is also not dead, half the old corporate world still has VB6 apps sitting somewhere. PHP is declining. it's claim to fame was that it was a free kid on an expensive block, today that advantage no longer exists, and it left PHP looking less lovable.

It's funny how people think PHP is dead, simply because they don't use it, out use "graphs" which never really tell us anything. PHP is a massive well established language. It's also a very good language for newbies like myself to get into OO programming. There will always be a demand for PHP development, and it's constantly being improved upon. I'm going to be picking up module 2 of your php course, module 1 was excellent.

I'm a newer web dev (just over a year) and I love PHP. So much so that I had decided in January to make it my strongpoint. I'm a former DBA so PHP, MySQL, and jQuery are kind of my comfort zone in this labyrinth of languages. But recently I've had several people tell me that PHP was on it's way out, and to focus on [insert language here]. I had become worried that I made a bad decision and wasted a ton of time, but now I feel very justified. So thanks a million for this vid! Time to get back to work on my rockstar language :D

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's dead, but one can say that in terms of web applications and not just websites or even basic dynamic websites; it's usually not what most people or startups chooses to use. For simple websites its awesome because its cheap to host and basically all hosting services support it but for more complex web applications it would probably be a good idea to focus on other alternatives.

That's kind of what I've been doing too. PHP at work, but I bounce between PHP and Node in my free time. Where I work is mostly static websites, but we're starting to take on larger projects in Laravel, so my hopes is to start including microservices that can be written in Node as a way to slowly introduce it to the ecosystem of the workplace.

I've always thought the argument wasn't accurate. Great vid sir 👍

Hi John, I am not skilled in developing hard-coded websites I mean from scratch from psd to html. But on wordpress, I can install it and then customize the site through the dashboard editor (stylesheet.css) or in .php (header or footer or body or sidebar) coz I can read, understand and edit those languages. I am an IT graduate and have developed a number of sites as freelance using Wordpress platform and I believe that is an easier work compared to those who really do the whole codes. So, I am wondering, can I consider myself a web developer? Thanks

Is JQuery going to replaced now with OOJ and Angular2 ( i know its a framework but is Jquery get old ?
@DanFletcher90
@DanFletcher90 8 жыл бұрын
If anything, I think jQuery will die off because of native support for web components - not larger frameworks like NG2. jQuery is so popular because there are a lot of web developers that don't really know how to code. Those same developers aren't making PWAs or SPAs so it's easier for them to pull in jQuery and a suit of plugins that are easy to configure then wrapping their heads around Angular or React. As web components become more popular and begin replacing the popular jQuery plugins, it'll be easier to copy and paste some simple markup into your webpage than configure jQuery. The only thing holding native web components back right now is that there aren't as many to choose from yet - but that'll change.

Great thanks much appreciate that. I can not seem to gel progressive enhancement vs. single page web apps. Are there instances when one is better than the other? I never understood the whole "php is dead" mantra since Wordpress is SO popular and will continue to be so. So clearly php should be in any freelance developer's toolset. That said, it seems that if you want to work with one of the new companies in silicon valley or some cool new startup (the kind that try to be like google) it seems learning javascript/ruby/python is the way to go. I worked at a boutique recruitment agency in New York and very few of the companies we worked with sought php developers.

Let's rephrase. PHP is no longer cutting edge. Even FB had to reinvent its client side through a quick rending UI toolkit aka React to hide some of the inefficiency of PHP. PHP may live on in the legacy application already build. Well mainframes are also not dead in that sense.

I think FB probably had to reinvent its client side partly because the whole site has become a complete mess coding-wise. Not so much to do with the language it was coded in. I would imagine the FB code as it currently stands is a runaway beast of fighting fires. The user interface is clunky and badly designed.

Maybe fewer people are researching PHP not because it is irrelevant, but perhaps if it is common enough that it powers 70 to 80% of websites, then most if not all, coders must already know it. It is common enough that there's no reason to research it if you know programming. Think of it this way, if you had a dictionary, are you looking up the definition of "cat"? No, you look up words like "zygote". Looking up words like cat would be a waste of your time. (fun fact: zygoat is the process of cell division after the fertilization of an egg. it is a killer scrabble word lol.)

If you go to the Wappalyzer website it shows the most popular softwares used on the web and they are all mostly php based. I think the language depends on the project. it's not that php is used by more sites -> it's that they have to, because when they started their companies php was popular and it would be hard for them to migrate their code base to another new language today. and smaller websites are forced to use php because free or cheap hosting provide a cpanel for php only. PHP sucks and here's why - apps written in other langugaes scale better than apps written in php (it doesn't scale very well ) - it trains beginners on bad practices - readability (just the worst) - debugging (pain in the ass - the dollar sign (the most annoying thing ever) and much more ...

Don't forget WordPress and "commercial" shared web-hosting. Bottom line is that people do not choose PHP explicitly. If you wanna do a small-medium websites you are basically forced to choose either WordPress or just plain PHP. So yes PHP is not dead, and will never die, but at the same time is a dying technology for big projects.

PHP is a dying language. Don't get wrapped up in web code so much that you ignore the fact that the rest of the software industry, which is REALLY big, doesn't use or care about PHP. Just like COBOL, PHP will probably always exist in some form or another. But it's hardly used, if it's used at all, outside of specific segments of web programming and it's facing a lot of changes from the likes of Python, Ruby, Node, and even C#.

@deretano_fondelli

Most of those sites have little to no traffic, mostly abandoned, so yea they are not moving on something new... The worst thing of all is that anybody can use Wordpress and mostly anybody can make a "crappy copy-paste" PHP script to make their newsletter form work. PHP is dying in terms of real-world app usage, but if you talk about Wordpress "app" and small businesses that do not use the net as their unique source of income, then is still alive and strong. And because of this, the job market for PHP developers is relatively poor, and with tons of other options, PHP is the least favorite.

mrblob20 well I'm not sure if you are in the professional scene. most new java developers are hired for maintaining code rather then writing new code. basically, while java is still a strong and fast language, many companies have dropped it in favor of other languages that support concurrency and asynchronous processes and languages that have less verbose syntax. of course this isn't the case with android mobile app development but then even many of those developers are moving away from java in favor of other solutions; react native and Scala come to mind.
