Everyone’s rig is unique but for what it’s worth: I did an A/B test with this and the UA Dream, then the UA Lion. This definitely doesn’t react as dynamically nor have the width of sound as the UA pedals - those are simply in a class of their own - but they didn’t put the IR-2 to shame either. The IR-2 will give you studio quality sound. Another thing to keep in mind: this takes mono input only. Yes, it has a stereo effects loop, but if you are sending a stereo drive pedal into this, such as your HX Stomp, a ProCo Deucetone, or the new Chroma Console, you lose your stereo separation and have to send it mono into this thing. For me that’s a major drawback and makes the UA pedals seem more flexible. I realize some people put their drive pedals in their effects loop but I’m guessing most of us do not. I did try my drives in the effects loop of the IR-2 and they sounded much worse to my ear. Something to consider before you make your purchase. Great demo and how-to for changing the Ambience setting. Cheers-

@r0bophonic
@r0bophonic 8 ай бұрын
@@user-zl5pz9qu8l no, you can’t plug it directly into a guitar cab. You’ll need a (clean, neutral sounding) power amp and speaker. That could be a PA system or a powered cab (like an FRFR). This pedal emulates the sound of various guitar amp circuits (Fender, Marshall, Vox, etc), but it doesn’t actually provide enough amplification to power a speaker like a guitar amp would (it provides only line level and headphone amplification). Your question isn’t dumb - it’s just very confusing due to the word “amp”.

@@user-zl5pz9qu8lusually amps are consists of Preamps then power amps. Then the power amp powers the cabs. Combo puts that into one package. Head and cab separates that. The reason for that is sometimes you want different speakers to get different "tone" or "timbre" or "character" based around your preamp. So pedals like this, you cannot "power" a cab with this pedal or any modelers because all of that is simulated and not really powered. Hope that makes sense haha

In the mix with a band, it's honestly no different. The IR-2 has a huge sweep range on the bass/mid/treble, so you need to find the sweet spot. The Dream is a little more dimed in, so easier to find a good sound. The benefit of this pedal is channel switching between a Fender-style to high-gain amp.

There is a strong appeal to this Boss pedal. Even if I think "sounds a bit like a Katana" Katana sounds good, good enough at worst. Form factor, options, price are pretty spot on. For me the only other thing that has a similar appeal is the Two Notes Opus. Fewer amps, less wysiwyg, but XLR & bass amps plus the two notes sound quality...but at a premium.
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid 8 ай бұрын
What do you mean fewer amps? It has just as many amps that available for the Katana it has 11 presets slots (not just 11 amps available.) You use the software and can load any amps, cabs and some FX from the software. You can even load 3rd party patches into it. This pedal is going to be huge especially when used with other modelers that can fill in the FX side while you use the premium amp and cabs from the Boss side as it has a premuim chip inside that is better than most moderers on market today. Your point that is sounds like a Katana will be this pedals success because it will be a low cost plug-in to convert any moderler to basically become a Katana.

Introduced in November, six months later I was able to get one. Made a lot of noise intermittently, but according to Boss this noise was acceptable. Sweetwater said electricity can be very problematic and cause noise issues. Even though I ran this on the battery, it still made noise intermittently (even with no other gear upstream or downstream). I returned it as it was defective. If a pedal is making random sizzling sounds on battery power there is an issue with the power supply circuit OR this is the nature of the circuit. Either way, not my cup-o-tea. If you don't have one currently I was told more may be available by summer. Thanks but no thanks.

My two cents. I've been sort of considering one of the current "amp on a pedalboard" options (UA Dream, Iridium, Humboldt Simplifier MkII) as a quick and convenient practice/recording/grab and go solution when I don't want to bring my main rig. I don't disagree that this Boss unit is a good value but I can't help it - it sounds more like a Katana than the other solutions. Again, it's just my two cents, which isn't even worth that much since I haven't played through any of these units yet (I did own a Katana briefly) and my observations are based only on the video reviews I've watched. It's just there there seems to be a certain artificial quality in the tone of the Boss that I didn't notice in other units.I might be wrong about that but that's what I hear.

Excellent review and nice playing. I've recently sold TC Ampworx 65 ... too grainy, but nice reverb, Zoom G6... liked the IR capability but not too fussed about amps but better than TC. I swear by Tech 21 as they are analog (Blonde). I wasn't convinced by UA and feel that they are overpriced considering this is a new era for amp sims and a lot of competition. Strymon.... last years model I'm afraid. The Boss totally clean sounded good enough for pedals and has reverb and USB interface/editor. I'm not sure about the Boss for pro recording BUT it's a winner for sure. I'm old school and once I get a bit of gear that works I ain't budging. I almost changed my pedalboard and guitars for a recent old school 'wrecking crew' session for R&B, soul, LA style singer songwriter but stood by my standard. Tech 21 Blonde > T-Rex Tremster > NUX Atlantic Reverb/Delay for base backing tracks, producer loved it. I'm going to buy IR-2 for sure, great for just firing up with my MacBook. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your comparison review. Best demo so far.

So an Hx stomp has been the solution. But with this, I can easily fit everything and use my favorite verb and delay instead of the stomp. Not that I would ever get rid of the stomp. It would just move to a fly rig.

I hoped you would review this pedal - thank you! I think the main competitor may be Two Notes Opus: no fx loop but has MIDI, it supports dual output but is mono all together, and it's backed up by Two Note's famous DynIRs. Oh and it has one bass amp model and can load two IRs simultaneously plus has an extra EQ (independent from its amps EQ) and a noise gate. Opus' preamp and power amp sims are two separate blocks, so you can decide if you want just pre, just power amp or both. No way to change presets or channels other than MIDI or app, though

Congrats on 100k man, I’ve indulged your content for a very long time and also bought some of your helix patch content. I am currently about to acquire a home playing rig and want to know if you think this or the Katana is a better option? I know they are vastly different products but which sounds better with headphones and with studio monitors? Any help much appreciated

I owned the IR-200 and I wish I had kept it because that pedal sounded fantastic for modeling. It was just too much in competition with the Iridium because that’s the hype. I’m sure this IR2 is a newer generation IR-200.

I would love it if you set your camera up with more light, (or increase the sensitivity?) so it gains depth of field...the focal plane is maybe a few millimetres only which means only the top of the dials are in focus, and the writing - 10 mm below is out of focus. It would greatly improve the video quality. Thanks.

I like the idea but it seems really fiddly! £180 great price but I can pick an ampero up for 80-100 more And there are other modellers with far more functionality! ? Mmmm great for back up but limited ❤

I really wish this unit had a deluxe reverb. I'm not a high gain person at all and think this unit doesn't really have great clean tones. I find it a bit boxy. It's still a great unit for practice but not the best sounding. The feel is great though. Latency is ridiculously low.

Think I saw a thread on reddit saying Yorke Audios IR’s made a difference on the cleans. Have only tried the demo rectifier one, and will probably end up gettong more.

@@TheTomarild I've tried the York audio ir's. I ended up preferring the stock IR for the the twin. In the end I decided to try the UA Ox stomp (a bit more money 😂). I absolutely love it. I find the cabs in the Ox to be better than any IR. The ir-2 with the ox stomp is now my new favourite rig. The Bluetooth on the Ox isn't the greatest, but once set up I don't really need it that often. I have a love hate relationship with universal audio, but do think that their modelling is head and shoulders above the rest of the competition.

@@ChrisJones-ht9zn Nice! I’m just using the IR2 with headphones at home, so it’s good enough for me. Surprised it drives my Beyerdynamic DT990 250 ohm headphones with ease!

Question about the IR-2... Can you different IRs on L & R. More specifically, can you run one out with an IR and one without? The Andertons review said not, but their reviews tend to be a fountain of misinformation. If it could do that, and it could be simultaneously run to a power amp + cab and FoH, sounding good into both, that would be useful. Without that functionality, i'll be sticking with my current 2 box solution

Hi. Why? Isn t this just a thinned down version of its bigger brother IR200, which has been around for some time? Does this have any improvement over the IR200? Thank you?

It sounds good, but maybe not great. When I plug into my ToneX my ears hear a real amp. I hear an amp sim with this (and the IR-200). It would be awesome to hear this against the more expensive options. For the money this would be a great practice tool though.

Amazing sounds John 🎸Now please tell me you can play it through the Fender Tonemaster FR12 you recently demo’d 🙏 If so, that’ll be my fly rig for 2024 as I’ll go straight out and buy them both. Would like to get your thoughts on if that set up works with some of your other guitars also. It would be an absolute game changer for me if it works as a live rig..🎸😎🙏
